yep, no monopoly by any one company. Gotta wonder though how different would things be with 15 or 20 owners rather than 7.......

15 or 20 owners would mean 10 or 15 companies without a station in the top 5, each trying to support a large sales staff, office staff, and programming, engineering and news folks (along with rent, heat, elec.) without a solid winner. Struggling to become the 4th station on a 4 station buy.

Consolidation isn't all bad for the industry. It gives a lot of stations a chance to thrive as the middle kid with average grades. The pressure is off for everyone to have a 4.0!

Revenues only grew 1% in all of 2006. The quality of programming is IMHO at an all time low. Actual jobs in radio has taken a devastating blow in the last 10 years. What's "Exciting" about that?

As Steve Meyer recently said, "How many people do you know, young or old, that are listening to local stations to hear their favorite songs? All you need do is talk to anyone ages 12+ and you'll find out real fast.

They are not "tuned in" to radio.

They have no affinity for listening to it at all."

We must do better or our industry will die. We don't have a few years to "see how it goes."

SARCASM.....(above)

Maybe the drive to be first class would be stonger with a wider ownership base... Now it seems ok to be mediocre.... You can still strive for a 4.0 despite being a 2.0 why be happy with average?

I honestly believe that one station that does not cave into that corporate model is KGON. I listen because I love the music they play, the programs, and the DJ's. Plus they actually sound like they enjoy it! They are always doing listener surveys, listener interactive programming (6-pack weekends)(connect the classics)(rock shots)! When you can phone in or email things and then hear them played that is cool!

The only gripe I have is the syndicated talk show in the AM.....I myself would rather have a live local show with news and music! I often find myself listening to the ZUNE on the morning drive. They do take breaks and a live person gives traffic and a little news but not the same as a full morning show.

KGON is the Best Classic Rock Station!
