Seattle now has Univision on ch51 cable28/29. They have offices in The KOMO bldg. Local commercials are inserted through out the day. Jaime Mendez of Radio Sol [KKMO] said on his talkshow that Univision is planing a newscast of local news maybe July. Im wondering ifUnivision will open a Portland office? I am very pleased that Spanish is part of our media landscape.

Yes, of course they will. You must not have been paying attention.
Univision is on local cable and over the air on CH 47 in Portland. It comes from KATU. Local commercials are inserted throughout the day. There will be a local newscast soon..... I don't know the date.
There is also a local website for the station:
http://www.kunptv.com
They have staff over in the KATU building on NE Sandy.

This information is not hard to find.

Any dates on adding an KOIN-HD2 channel for Univision here in Portland?

Would only make sense if analog is going dark in 2009.

Well, Drchaps,
I wouldn't hold my breath for a KOIN-HD2 channel for Univision.
First of all, Univision for Portland is owned by Fisher/KATU.

Second, the Univision on CH47 is not going away in 2009 because it does not come under the analog shutdown.

Has Univision announced plans or a date to do HD?

I'll have to say, however, in HD, it would merit watching even if you didn't understand or speak Spanish. Have you seen their programming???

It would be nice to see *something* on the KOIN HD2 and 3... seems like a big waste of bandwidth to show the same program 3x.

Hahaha...

I meant KATU... They are only using one channel on the digital side. KOIN already has 2 channels on the digital side, one for HD and one with their analog feed that supplements kid shows on occasion.

Can you shed some light Jimbo on why it doesn't fall under the planned analog shutdown? I heard it was for ALL stations because the FCC wanted to move the 700mhz spectrum.

I don't remember all the details but I believe that Low Power, LPTV, and repeaters are exempt for right now. And CH47 is one of them.
I remember reading about it here a few months back but cannot find it now. I've done some searches but the correct one does not come up.

Found it. It helps to use the correct search words. It was in the thread titled "What is with tv audio, lately?"
Alfredo_t posted it and said: "From the last story that I read about that dreadful day in 2009, only full-powered analog broadcasts will be required to go off the air. Your existing NTSC TV will still be able to receive LPTV stations."
I asked questions about that and found it was true and I also inquired about CH47 and was told that it was true for that, also.
I can't tell you any more than that 'cause that's all I know about it.

Univision Portland and Univision Seattle will eventually share a local newscast when they get their ducks in a row....Univision on some programming stands for T & A....not complaining I might add.

And, Radio921, I am told that if you think Univision is T&A, you should check out Telemundo. It is more so.

Watching the Spanish language shows, you can tell a difference between them and the regular English language networks. They seem to have fun and enjoy themselves more than the English ones. AND, they know how to get and keep an audience.
