Why not! I mean aside from the expense. Why could you not get one AM/FM group and do it right. It would take some work from dedicated people and some private funding from investors who tire of the corporate BS themselves. Unlikely....but not impossible is it?

Darktemper, there really isn't much expense in doing this concept, unless the station plays no commercials (and this particular station evidently doesn't!) But, a lot of stations "market" themselves this way,(giving the audience the perception they are driving the bus), but still do extensive research and play the songs that test well. Smoke & Mirrors in many cases...This station suppoosedly serves portions of the Phoenix market, yet barely shows up in the ratings. Check out "The Drive" in Chicago...{http://www.wdrv.com/music.php), Similar selling points, but I can tell you they are thoroughly "researched"! But, admittedly a great radio station for those of us of a certain age. And THEY play commercials!

I have KCDX on a car push button down here in the desert... There are *NO* commercials, and that's been the case for as long as I remember (over three years now, maybe a little more)... The owner has several stations in small markets around Arizona, and likes to look for opportunities to move them to rimshot status around a larger community. I think he's the guy that moved 95.1 from Winslow to Sun City West and sold it for a handsome profit. There's a rumor that went around these parts last year that KCDX may move to a point closer to Tucson, but nothing's been filed in all this time. Meanwhile, you can hear this on your car radio over the eastern half of the Valley of the Sun and then some! At 2700 watts, it's all thanks to a good mountaintop location, even though it's something like 50 miles east of Mesa. But you can't hear it on your Walkman! (Too far away...) There was an article in one of the local papers last year about a rock group passing through on their bus, listening to the station. They took a detour to try and find the station studios because they couldn't believe the mix of songs, some of which they hadn't heard on the radio in a LONG time. I think they found it, but couldn't find anyone to talk to...The automation computer is co-located at a religious-formatted AM station in Globe, AZ. You'll hear anything ranging from classic rockers to Little Richard, to George Thorogood. You may not like eveything you hear, but it's a hoot to listen to!

I'm not sure I understand this owner's motives. Perhaps try and get great ratings, then try and make money? Seems a little bass-awkwards. Or maybe he is just one of those radio freaks who is in it just for the pleasure of it all. Interesting situation there in Arizona.

I'm working on this very same mission statement. Now admittedly, I have very little to lose compared to others. But with the advent of internet streaming, you CAN find an audience. Mine will be me and my imaginary friend Toby that lives in my eyebrow. But his friends will tell someone. And their friends will tell someone, etc. Will it prove to be self-indulgent? Yes. To a fault? I hope not. Will I pay attention to what listeners tell me they want? Some of it. Will I just TALK to a listener and explain why I am playing this or that song? Yep. Why not? I want to play to the future sausage makers of the world. There are LOTS of them. Now, I know you'll all be waiting with bated breath. The goal is not for me to tell you about it. But for someone else to tell you about it. And no, you won't be able to hire Toby away from me. He's very loyal and smells like peanut butter.

Paul: Ratings don't matter. In this guy's case, the licenses are simply investments to be "flipped," as in the case of the Winslow station (in northern AZ) that became KVIB 95.1, Sun City West (northwestern Phoenix metro)... The market is a LOT bigger, and the price tag of the license increases exponentially. Chickenjuggler's description is pretty close to what KCDX actually does, musically (except for Toby)... Don't know how long it will go on, but it DOES add variety to the dial down here. And some advertisers have asked if they could buy time on the station. No sales yet, though...
