You will have to cut and paste the entire link. I don't mind saying it's about damn time the FCC did something besides chasing Howard Stern around the country.

I agree. Payola has survived through every decade. The consolidation of ownership has made the smell so concentrated, the stink has attracted a crowd.

12 Mil?

Chump change that will likely change very little...

Break 'em up, for a more solid change.

Yep. I would much rather see somebody in the can for a while. That would impact behavior.

The dollars just get passed on. Bump the airtime rates a small percentage, and it's all over all too quickly and easily.

"They also separately agreed to set aside 4,200 hours of free radio time for independent musicians, the sources said."

Let's see, for those companies, that makes it about 1 hour per station. Wow. Wonder what time they'll run those?

The FCC blew this agreement. The agreement was being started last year. Some of the stations are already doing the local prgramming. At 10:00...at night!! Based on current ratings almost nobody listens at night.

The penalty should have been if you own more than three stations in a market you must give up one station that must be sold to an independant buyer who already owns no stations.

Since this defintely a payola situation if I remember correctly Alan Freed lost his job. This penalty is not enough. In addition yes.com which helps the payola sitiuation still is being used.

We need to get an FCC with teeth to stop this crap.

"We need to get an FCC with teeth to stop this crap."

Not going to happen with Bush (or any Republican) in the White House. It's even unlikely under a pro big business Democrat. Not only that, but Congress is not known for standing up to the NAB lobby regardless of controlling party.

Didn't Freed go to prison and die penniless?
