Im living on the Streets of Burnside! I spend my days looking through garbage cans and begging people for money. After getting fired from just about every station in the country I sold my soul to the devil.
Oh by the way I used to be a very big Disk Jockey in LA called Runny Nose.

I would like to know what happened to Bill Dudley (Stump the Dud) who did mornings at top-40 KASH Eugene in the early 80s? When it came to top-40 hits he was a walking encyclopedia and put his knowledge on the line every morning with listeners.

And where is Andy Barber who also worked there about the same time? In the early 80s contemporary Christian KORE beat KASH in one Arb book, and Andy put a fist through a wall exclaiming something to the effect of 'no God radio is going to beat Andy Barber.'

I guess he took his ratings a bit personally.

I was pretty close to Andy at the time and I believe the quote was "No way. God doesn't beat The Barber."
Referring to religious KORE beating Rock KASH in the ratings. I was at KBDF and KZEL at the time.

Steve, once again you have come through for us Barber fans! Had not heard that KULF aircheck. Must have been one the last great high-energy AM top40's. Barber sounds great here, but you can tell he was most likely under some "tight" format restraints. (compare to KING where he goes totally off the wall and even rambles a bit!) But all the jocks here sounded really good; energy, brevity, and entertaining...all marks of what 70's top40 radio was all about.

"No way. God doesn't beat The Barber."

I will take your word for it Mysterydj. That was a long time ago. I was at KORE at the time and also remember Rod Lewis applying at KORE after the Andy incident. As I recall KASH could never topple KBDF except maybe Bill Dudley on morning drive? KBDF simply had a huge overall presence in the 70s. Chris Murray made it sound like a 50,000 watt powerhouse, and those window stickers were everywhere.

Ironicaly it was Rod who hired me away from KORE to KSND and I remember that hole being there for many years....a memorial to Andy.

I've said it before, but in my mind there were two giants in Top40 radio in the 1968-1979 era...Lujack and Barber. I know others were equally talented, but these two are my reality growing up. (Dan Ingram, Greaseman, and other east coasters probably are right up there, but as a westcoast/midwest guy, I can't relate :-( )

It's my understanding that Bill Dudley (KASH) is the guy who later owned Dudley's Route 66 Records. He was fired as PD of KASH in the late spring of '79, right when the station was giving KBDF some serious competition. After bad publicity (big newspaper article) over the firing, KASH never recovered. Andy was brought in to try and salvage the station, but 1600 was forever cursed and neither Andy, nor God himself could have saved the place.

I do remember Bill Prescott as "Van Williams" on KASH ("Crank it up...") during their rock/40 phase. While KBDF had a hot audio chain, KASH was the most distorted pile of grunge on the dial during the post-Dudley era. As I recall, it wasn't long before Prescott moved over to KBDF/KZEL.

yeah...Dudley's real name is Bill Thompson...came out of Quincy CA to Eugene to work for the fat Texan..he replaced a worthless P.D. who was sent back to Chi-town after he wrecked the car that Mr. Popcorn (Freddy Danz) bought him...damn near killed himself coming down the Willamette Street hill.. Before that, KASH was All News-All the Time...P.D. was Morgan C. Morgan.(your news and information service)
Dudley headed for Portland, opened up a record store for a number of years...lost track of him.
Dudley did mornings, I did mid-days, guy named Andy Barber did afternoons(was from Wenachee).
We were never a serious threat to BDF...different format all together.

Hi there. My dad's name was Bill Calder and according to the information I've compiled about him, he worked at a station in Portland back in 1970's called KPOX. (Can anybody verify that this station existed, or is this a typo of some other call letters?) Check out the following links for more about my dad, and if anybody has any information, I'd love to hear about it!

Kq4, you were right the first time. I had the pleasure of working for Bill Calder at KpOK radio in the mid-70's. It was when the FM station originally switched to country. M odern country as we called it then, we were one of the first stations outside of Texas to play Jerry Jeff Walker's LA Freeway. Bill was a wonderful man and a great mentor, but always seed a big fish in a small pond here in P-Town.

Memory is a little fuzzy about exact years, but as close as I can recall, it was either late 1973 or early 1974, he was not here very long, maybe 3 or 4 months. Like I said, he kinda was out of place in what was then a much "smaller" thinking market than he was used to. Yes, We were an AM/FM combo, I don't remember which way the switch went but one side went automated beautiful music (read elevator) and the other went "modern country" We paved the way for the juggernaut that is now KUPL FM. (the KUPL calls started on the beautiful music side, we were OK radio. KP-OK, portland.

ISTR KUPL's launching theme was something like "Music for Lovers"; I remember a billboard showing a hand-holding pair of young adults gazing out from some kind of fog or mist. (Such was the Seventies.) "Modern Country" at the end of the '70s impressed me as raunchy (married to a Country listener than, I came to think of those as the Tinsel-ville years), giving that call a connotation rather different than originally intended.

I think KPOK was just an "updating" of the AM's historic KPOJ call at the split (the mandated end of simulcasting to wean FM, which unfortunately caused most of both dials to be relettered), as the station hadn't been associated with the Journal (then still in print) for over a decade.

On November 15, 1972 KPOK AM&FM were sold to Tracy Broadcasting Co. (FCC approval 5-16-73). The combo switched to a Country format in late 1972. Slogan: Rockin' Country. On July 11, 1973 KPOK-FM became KUPL(FM) and switched to an automated format. Slogan: 98-FM, blooming with beautiful music. The AM following between August 23 & 28, 1976 as KUPL(AM).

I worked at 'JJ when KPOK came along as the "modern county" staion. There was a lot of concern AT 'JJ that they'd actually have to start formating the station instead of just throwing the jocks in a room with several hunred records and say "go for it."

Sammy Taylor actually played A gospel record every hour complete with a huge produced intro. Bill Rackley had a pile of 45s he kept outside the control room that only he played...sometimes the same record two or three times in a four and a half hour shift. Denis Ackerman had an MOR approach and Chris "Adams" (Ackerman - Denis' little brother) had a more top 40 approach.

They really didn't need to worry. KPOK so insluted the country music fan with their liners (Showing Portland what country is really all about...or somethng like that) that they never gained an audience. They didn't last for long as a country station. They also played a lot of music with dubious ties to country.

And yes, Bill Calder did mornings on KPOK. He came from some larger market and was considered to be KPOK's ace in the hole.

That's pretty close to how I remember it too. Differences would be that KPOK started as a "modern country" format after the ownership change. It became "Rockin' Country" in Feb. '74. Bill Calder was gone by the time I got there, so I didn't have a chance to work with him. KPOK became KUPL AM as Craig listed above. Fast Forward 10 years and new owner Scripps-Howard changed the EZ listening station to "Continous Hit Country" and started another battle with KWJJ but this time on the FM band. Leaving what turned out to be a significant programming hole on the FM dial that was subsequently filled by KKCW. Who went "worst" (new signal in the market with NO listeners) to "first" (Number one Adults 25-54 M-Su) in one year.

I have to trust Craig. When I got there in Feb of 74, the AM was country and the FM was automated TM format, EZ listening. I don't really know what happened before that. I thought the FM station was sort of an AC/Oldies mix that was all on tape, but I really don't know.

By the way, Craig, Thanks for all your efforts to document all this history. I hope everyone appreciates what you are doing. I certainly do.

I tried to post this much earlier but don't see it now: I was brought in for the beginning of KUPL. When I arrived a few days before the switch, the old FM automation system was running Oldies albeit softer than what we usually consider to be Oldies. I'm almost positive that the AM was still running Oldies at that time and a few days later AM switched to Country and FM to TM Beautiful Music. When I started my first shift, AM was definitely Country and FM was Beautiful Music with a brand new automation system.

I don't know if we could call this irony or not,but remember that KWJJ-FM was also not country but "Beautiful Music" zzzzzzzzz as KJIB-FM 99.5 before it became country simulcasting its longtime AM sister?...can anyone fill me in on exactly when that was? Seems like 1983 or so...

I don't think Park Broadcasting owned KJIB very long before taking it Country. I believe it was owned by Contemporary FM for all those years of Beautiful Music and Classical Omnibus at night. I think they switched it to Show Tunes and back to Beautiful Music before going Country. I'll guess 3 years but could be way off. They had one pretty good book just before KUPL went Country in 1984 so 1983 could be a good guess. I think they kept the calls for a couple of years before changing to KWJJ-FM.

I haven't done any formal research on this station and haven't run into anything on the change but I do have documentation:

"In late June 1979 Bernie W. Thompson was named G.M. of KJIB, which switched to a "Beautiful Country Music" format in 1979. KJIB now began 25% duplication of KWJJ."

"On August 19, 1985 KJIB changed call letters to KWJJ-FM and began duplicating its AM sister station 55% of its program hours. Both stations now aired "Modern Country Music" 24 hours a day."

"In late 1985, KJIB's license name changed from Contemporary FM Inc. to parent Roy H. Park Broadcasting Inc."

Ahh...the rite of spring...SPRING TRAINING! The world is new, this year looks great, the citrus trees are blooming with a vengeance (how sweet!!) and the boys of summer are getting set for the new season in the Arizona sun.

I'm finishing my 10th year as PA announcer for the Oakland A's spring training, and I'm spoiled rotten. Saw the Mariners yesterday, and they gave the A's fits. Tomorrow is my last game, with the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim"... Then I go through withdrawals and become a civilian again.

Glad you got to partake of it, Mark... There's no other experience like it in the world.

P.S. -- Portland REALLY needs their own MLB team... You deserve more than just the Blazers to cheer for!
