BREAKING NEWS!! BREAKING NEWS!!

Saw this in the Columbian yesterday, Monday, February 19, 2007, page D-1:

KKSN GONE FROM THE DIAL
Fans can kiss KKSN-AM radio goodbye.
The radio station was Portland's only local option for music from the 1950s and '60s. The chan-nel, now called KTRO-AM 910, proadcasts talk radio including syndicated shows hosted by Laura Ingraham, Dennis Prager and Michael Medved.
Station's spokeswoman Denise Davis said the switch is permanent and programming will be simulcast on KTRO-AM 910 and KTRO-FM 93.1.
----------------------------------------------

So, it's been almost a month now, and the Columbian is just *now* hearing about this??

In other news today: An independent study has revealed the automobile has displaced the horse-drawn carriage as the main, preferred form of transportation for commuters!

Ha!

Alert the media (At least "The Columbian")!

You might want to let them know about both Saddam and Generalissimo Francisco Franco. (Apologies to SNL)

I'm still waiting for the Oregon Journal's write up on this! They did such a great job back in 1976 when KISN signed off.

Merkin:

In other recent developments:
Hawaii has been granted statehood at long last, and
O.J. Simson pled "Not Guilty for the murder of his wife.

(I'm still waiting for the C's write-up on those events. I wonder if they even covered their 100th anniversary way back in the early 90s?)

;o)

I hear that the change might be permanent. If so, I would hope that they go with a syndicated lineup of talkers that offer a generic alternative to LOCAL programming and, to go one step further, I would urge them to simulcast it if possible. I might just call them and suggest it.

Not entirely certain, although they might have. (The C's been on this earth for about 94 years more than I have, so it's entirely plausible I might have missed it. Although there's always the microfilm at the library downtown........)

YOu can beat a dead horse in the water but you can't make him drink it. Let's grab the bull by the horns and make lemonade while the gettin's good. Remember, it's the early bird that lays golden eggs. Don't beat it to death.

I noticed (with some surprise) there was no Wikipedia page for KISN; it redirected to some airport in N.Dak. (its ICAO code). But hey, tonight, there's now a disambig page between that and "KISN (radio)" for "a radio station in Portland, Oregon, USA." This change occurred 1/27, though it remains a "redlink" (no article yet).

here's an email I got regarding the demise of KISN yesterday. Not that its gonna change Entercom's mind but it just goes to say that not everyone is running to k-hits.

To whom It May Concern!
This is very very Sad. It was the only station I really enjoyed listening too. I liked it when it went from AM to FM, I was able to enjoy the stereo sounds. But then when it went back to Am that was not a good sign. Now I have no need for a radio any longer other than getting the News. Just have to get more CD's I guess.
The next thing to go will be Broadcasted Television on the airwaves....Then I will sell my TV too. Be damned if I will have pay to watch it. Cable sucks.
Sorry to be so negitive!! I do thank you for getting back to me so fast....
A very sad, past, loyal listener!! ( sence 1963 )

.......but not if s/he buys or uses a convertor box!

Cable sucks. I never can understand what the big fascination is with paying to watch TV or hear an audio broadcast but apparently there is. I've never been for it, myself. Always stood by the credo of "broadcast TV and radio, whether it be local or via Satellite, is always free."

(I still haven't made it down to Video Only yet, by the way.............)

KTRO appears to be simulcasting its 93.1 signal on 910 full-time. I always thought there was a limit to how much simulcasting an AM-FM combo could do. Does anyone know if and when that rule was abolished?

The Simulcast AM FM rule hasn't been a rule for a long time.

They brought back the fulltime simulcast as a way to keep marginal AMs afloat. The rule had long outlived its usefulness in attracting people to the FM band and was really starting to hurt AM. I'll guess it's been about 20 years.

Continuing "The Columbian" newspaper lambasting, I picked up the Sunday edition, took a peek at their "TV Times" for the radio listings. Well Kisn still lives! But there's more listings they need to update:

AM
KISN 910 Oldies [should be: KTRO 910 Talk]
KUPL 970 Comedy [should be: KCMD 970 Talk]
KZNY 1010 Oldies [should be: KMUZ 1010 Mexican Oldies]
KLVP 1040 Cont. Christian [should be: KXPD Regional Mexican]
KRMZ 1150 Spanish [should be KXMG 1150 Contemporary Mexican]
KMUZ 1230 Spanish [should be KSZN 1230 [Spanish Sports]
KKSL 1290 Religious [should be deleted from the listing, no longer on the air]

FM
--------------------[add: KTRO 93.1 Regional Mexican]
KRVO 105.9 Smooth Jazz [should be: KIJZ Smooth Jazz]
KLTH 106.7 Oldies [should be: KLTH 106.7 Classic Hits]
--------------------[add: KVMX 107.5 Rhythmic A.C.]

KLTH is NOT Classic Hits. Classic Hits is a rock based hit format intended to attract more women than Classic Rock. It also skews softer and includes what were originally considered to be rock type artists such as America. Examples would be Earth 105 and more recently, the River. KLTH is an updated Oldies station in search of a better positioning moniker. They can call it Classic Hits if they want but the name's already taken.

I used to fill in Arbitron reports. Besides listing all shows, they would ask for any station positioners and the correct format. It looks good on paper, like when Billboard listed KCNR as a CHR reporter.

Well, at least they aren't still listing 106.7 as being either "Progressive Rock" or "Quadraphonic" or something along similar lines.

If that was the case it would be apparent the C has some *REAL* problems......!! ;o)
