I knew that crowd for a blink of an eye. I really don't fit any scene, so it was more of an anthropological study, like most of my 20s. Of course, most everyone has at least thought of being a pincushion these days, so this particular locksmith was a pioneer. I don't have a problem with it, but I have had enough holes and scars for medical reasons to not volunteer for more. Or, for that matter, a pair of "petite" lips tattooed on my hand. The clipped-off Britney locks were mentioned in the BBC article above. It will be interesting to see how much these are worth. When did this phenomenon start that hair clippings, sweat, and other mundane things associated with famous people have special value?

Right after the sixth grade, I shaved my head in an effort to get rid of dandruff! I think that it actually worked, but I could never get used to the feeling of losing that much heat through my head. I ended up wearing a painter's cap most of that summer.

Here's another question: so if it is not OK for your minor daughter to shave her head, would it be equally off limits for your minor son to shave his?

Postscript: Having hair has saved me from getting nasty cuts on my scalp on many occasions, so I do not recommend head shaving strictly for safety reasons.

Actually I would (and have allowed my sons to shave their heads close.) No balding head, unless there is a good reason though.

I tend to enforce the minimum gender norms based on what the child presents as.

Ok, I've thought this out.

My kids appear to be gender normal, so my decision to maintain permissive but acceptable gender norms works. Role play, humor, etc... is all good, but that's it.

However, if my kids were not gender normal, I would have to say I would invest in figuring things out.

During that time, some bending of the rules would be permitted as part of a social test, and to allow enough self expression so as to prevent suicide, etc... Might find a fetish, curiosity, poor self image, acting out prior abuse, etc... All of these can be addressed and are no biggie, given a supporting environment.

Having determined where they really are, my only inhibition would be things that endure, that would force things beyond what they appear capable of handling. Body piercings, tattoos, hormones, electrolysis (however you spell that), etc.. would be off the table until they are making their own choices.

Until then, I'm gonna keep their options open for their own good, barring some damn good support from more than one set of trained professionals, with references. And they are going to have to support their conclusions in a solid way to my satisfaction, or no dice.

At the end of the day, I would need to know my decisions were defensible. That way, the adult to become won't hate me, or themselves.

There is no reason to set expectations that may have to continue to be met. Kids have it hard enough these days. Adding to the pile of crap, unless it is necessary for their greater well being, makes no sense at all.

I don't know, maybe I just don't see shaving your head as that big of a deal. Hair grows back...and when you've had extensions and processing as often as she has....sometimes shaving might be better than what you currently have to deal with. It's a blank slate and I'd do it if I a) ever got headlice (My hair is incredibly thick....I remember having to go through checks as a kid and NEVER EVER EVER will I deal with the real thing) or b) fried my hair to the point that she has.
