yep, apparently there's a new nixon documentary showing tonight on pbs (I THINK!!!! Check your local listings). kinda strange that the troll hasn't hyped this up. I'm suspecting it might be because the "liberal media" is giving this thing a positive review meaning that Nixon's shortcomings aren't going to be downplayed.

Are you talking about "The Last Great Ape" on NOVA tonight at 11? :-) Actually the documentary is on the History Channel (or as I call it, the "Military History Channel."), and I no have. It will show at 8PM it appears. Oh, well. Think any bars will be broadcasting it? :-) Perhaps I can go to Herb's place and watch it! Andrew

Herb, I was quite taken with the book "The Dark Side of Camelot" by Seymour Hersh - a scathing book about JFK. I am open-minded enough to accept the criticism of this man whom I still admire - so maybe you should do the same and watch the Nixon film? I would definitely watch it if I had the Military History channel. Andrew

I turned on my TV tonight to see it was already on The History Channel. But it was a half and hour into it already. I set the DVR to tape it at the midnight replay. I have to admit, the mere two minutes I saw had me hooked. But I had to force myself to turn the station as I wanted to see the whole thing. It looked fantastic.

"Exactly how is herb a troll when you create topics soley meant for him to post in?" Just because he's a troll doesn't mean he can't BE trolled. The one doesn't negate the other. And herb is a waste of fucking skin, so I don't understand why anyone really pays attention to his acting ass anyway, especially after I exposed his chump ass as the fucking faker he is in the first place. At this point, it's the combination of herb's troll tendencies going into overdrive combined with the macabre sense of playfulness. Yunno, like cats enjoy playing with the crippled and bleeding bird for an hour before just leaving it in the grass to wheeze it's last ragged breath. At worst, this thread is playing off the persona Herb cultivated for a specific reason and poking holes in his follow through. If he was as good a troll as the sad fuck THINKS he really is, he wouldn't have let this slip at any point, and would have STARTED the thread as a way to "look, let me educate you" condescend as has been his M.O. from the minute the shitbrick decided to waste his life pretend-fighting people on a portland radio messageboard. And Nixon was an asshole.

Nixon: A Presidency Revealed Most people I know watch or read everything they can about someone they're interested in, both good and bad, to reinforce, or to form their own opinion. Herb makes it sound like he's "cheating on" his hero if he watches it. I think just seeing the rare home movies would be of interest to anyone. Here's the promo: Nixon: A Presidency Revealed DVD Features rare footage from home movies shot by Nixon staffers. From the producer and director of the Presidency Revealed specials on FDR and JFK. In-depth interviews with Henry Kissinger, Alexander Haig, John Dean, Ben Bradlee and many more. Richard Milhous Nixon was a tremendously enigmatic man. The scandals and achievements of his Presidency, his resignation and his legacy are fundamentally formative elements in the character of our nation. Through exhaustively researched and dramatically presented archival materials, as well as exclusive in-depth interviews, NIXON: A PRESIDENCY REVEALED explores the unlikely origin, the thrilling promise and the crushing downfall of the 37th President of the United States. Nixon oversaw school integration and the Moon Landing. He presided over detente with the Soviet Union and the opening of China to the West. He supervised the establishment of the EPA and the DEA. He appeared on Laugh-In and met Elvis. Yet, this reserved (some say uncharismatic) Quaker, fiercely proud of his self-sufficiency and integrity, resorted to the dirtiest tricks in politics and took offense that the supremacy of his authority was even questioned. Using newly released White House recordings and telephone calls, home movies shot by Nixon staffers, and the dialy recordings of Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman, NIXON: A PRESIDENCY REVEALED goes inside the Nixon administration to understand how the President's hatreds and mistrust of his own staff lead to ruin. In-depth interviews with participants in the Nixon saga - Haig, Kissinger, Dean, Bradlee and others - as well as with renowned scholars and historians, complete the portrait. NIXON: A PRESIDENCY REVEALED, presents the story of a man whose own demons and resentments drove him to criminal excess. Wow! This just sounds positively scandalous and over-sensationalized and just way too shocking to watch. (said with sarcasm)

Stone me for believing this to be true, but something tells me that "some schmuck that won a contest to get a job in radio" was not only a pretty g*dd*mn substantial talent to begin with, but had to get even better to keep from being labeled as such by his peers. Don't like him, don't listen, but don't doubt his skills. Stick to doing what you do best and keep those knee pads warm for the Trolls. (btw - the midnight repeat was a red herring. "For now, I sure don't." Yes. Yes you do. Swearing isn't a "schtick," it's how people talk. It's how I talk. It's how 99 percent of the people here talk. The idea that it's something I have to affect, to sound dumber, so that teenagers will accept me is asinine. For example: I drop F-bombs and I'm still appreciably smarter than you'll ever be, and that's probably how it's gonna zero out when Jesus comes, too. Jesus: Ah, my children. Time to come home. Fatty: Fuck yeah! Thanks Jesus! Jesus: Hi-five, pottymouth! (Slap) Herb: Hello, Jesus Jesus: You're an asshole. Herb: There you go trying to impress the 18 year olds again. Jesus: And an idiot, too. Here's a hoagie and some purgatory. Herb: darn liberals. Why not just plug your ears and scream "la-la-la" and be more honest about your reaction than this faux-intellectual "i'm so disappointed" bullshit that you thinks gives you a non-existent high ground? Being honest all around would be a good step for you. Like your (fake) hero Nixon, it's a step he could never take, and I doubt (fake) you will ever take it, either. Of course, if you were smart enough to realize how succinctly I'm boxing you in and kneecapping you, you'd have dropped the game or left by now. But I refuse to dumb myself down for your consumption, so I just gotta hope some sort of evolutionary leap occurs within you and it all makes sense.

"Fatboyroberts-If you ever begin posting without vulgarity..." Bullshit, horseshit and cowshit! What you really mean is that you might take him seriously. That's your choice, but it does not diminish the points made in the least. Think hard about why this just might not matter to others. If you are honest in this exercise, you will be enlightened --trust me. I agree that too much profanity is a bad thing. It's also bad to post it with a clear intent to inflame others. Both of these things are lazy and that's not real, frankly. However, using it for emphasis, to express things beneath worth, and to convey less than beautiful concepts and ideas, is perfectly acceptable. There are many things in this world that simply cannot be properly expressed using Disneyland language. For you guys, who discount something with some profanity in it, grow up please? Another thing about profanity I think people here might find interesting: It is a sign of comfort and honesty. Having to speak formally means a barrier between people that impacts the conversation. Either you want it real, or you want Disneyland. Fats coming here, bothering to share some honest time with us, is a complement in that he feels he is able to have the conversation without having to coddle people. It also means he finds us to have some value. For what it's worth, I feel exactly the same way. The value is in the real conversations. Without this, there is zero reason to be here. The idea that a person is rendered meaningless from some profanity is a fallacy. Regarless of form, the point of discussion must be considered on it's own merit, or those refusing to do this are just dodging the issues, for whatever reason. This too is lazy. Finally there is this: What others think of ones choice of expression only matters as much as one thinks it does; therefore, it is only a worry if the other party is worthy of some greater deference! Think hard on the implications of that. Put up too many barriers between yourself and other people and you end up in this bizzare bubble where nobody actually engages you in an honest way. That's no way to live. With language comes profanity period. We cannot have one without the other. This is reality. Please grow up and deal for your own good. Fats has already done that, as have others here, including myself. I, for one, flat out refuse to be dominated in this way, and I will defend anyone else looking for the same. This venue is of zero value if we somehow are compelled to be less than real. Playing this lame ass "holier than thou" game is simply not worth anybodys time.

I don't particularly care for the flaming here, but what--and I'm not trying to be sarcastic or provocative--redeeming qualities or accomplishments were there in the Nixon Presidency that are worthy of celebration on their own merits? OK, Nixon did sign the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act, which beefed up the language on the warning labels on cigarettes, and which banned broadcast advertising of cigarettes. What else did he do?

You know what? I've done my best to frame things nicely and not step on toes. I realize now, well, it is a waste of time. Folks know that I know my sh*t, I can form a thought and I can back it up, but they like my humor more. I am only truly boring when trying to convince a bore. Whenever I have a chance, I am going that funnybone way. If someone doesn't like me enough to jerk my job or not offer one in the future, I would rather work for someone without that kind of power base anyway. C'est la vie. I took two tests figuring I'd be outed as a treehugging liberal and was outed as a treehugging centrist. That makes me an Oregon of one. So, I am gonna just toss whatever out here from now on and not worry about alienating anyone. Pretty f*cking simple. I learn something here or laugh like hell every day: Thanks to (almost) all of you. I want to keep giving back, not just coming back and spreading turds.
