OK.....I have opened the dial a little and done some sampling.

I still do not like the mainstream Rock being played on most more current stations. There a some songs that I find tollerable over my first choice of Classic Rock but not many.

I have started the sampling due to the fact that when traveling with my family it is 3 to 1 not to listen to the music I like. The others either like newer mainstream music, country, or pop. Seeing as I am the "DRIVER" "I have the power (a little he-man for ya there) so he radio goes silent. Until recently with the family in the rig and using the little seek thingy.....it came to rest on of all stations 104.1 the Fish! Hmmmm....kind of has that mainstream rock sound but the lyrics are uplifting and inspirational.....and everyone did not mind listening including me. So now the radio can be on 104.1 instead of silence! I can live with that.

Have you guys listened to that station lately? It is really not bad!

My kid is 14 and that is is absolute favorite, wife likes it too, I tolerate it, although I prefer classic country on kckx in stayton.
I do know what you mean dt, it really can be a good choice for the whole family.
Interestingly enough, a similar case on tv with teh Hallmark Channel.
Don't laugh, but a story came out last week that it was ranked 9th in viewership.
It beat out tbs, tnt and usa.
Perhaps the country is starting to tire of sex and violence and looking for a little more inspiration?

"sex and violence and looking for a little more inspiration"

uhh, no. there is no connection between the two. heck, during the dark ages when "inspiration" was the rule, the was a lot more violence and not much else to do besides have sex.

Darktemper, if I'm in one of the vehicles that doesn't have a Sirius receiver in it, my 2 choices are 104.1, The Fish and 92.3, KGON. Lots of times in that order!

I'm one of the sound guys at our Church and I always listen on the way to Church on Sunday because a lot of the songs they play are the same ones our worship team sings. It gives me a feel for how the song should sound!

If I'm going to listen on a weekday morning, Pete and Brenda have a good show that is not filled with sophomoric, moronic humor (the word humor is used loosely).

When I filled in on news for a while on The Fish, I found the music to be very enjoyable, but I'd need to have other stations on my presets to avoid the feeling I was falling out of touch with pop culture.

Of course, that only matters if you expect to need to work in other formats again...

For me, I'm just getting tired of the use of crude expressions or obscenity as a crutch.

Saturday night, my wife took me to the Newmark Theatre to see the live improv act of the "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" cast. Only one of the four cast members was actually from the TV program, but OK, I expected that...

What blew me away was that K-103 promoted this as a family show, and it started raining F-bombs the moment they walked out! By whose definition is that, or an improvised song with lyrics about an STD causing your genitals to drip, family fare?

Except for that "bait-and-switch" feeling, this was a very funny show.

I'm not shocked by the F-word anymore, nobody is. More like disappointed. It's just become a lame crutch for people from whom I expected real creativity.

There are parallels in musical lyrics. Sorry...nasty language and trying to gross me out just isn't cutting edge anymore.

WOW....someone woke up on the wrong side of the ROCK! (little geico humor there)

BTW...you always bashing on 107.5. Why bother? The station is on auto pilot and not worthy of listening to, if they even played music I like I would not listen.
When they take the turn and become a real station again with live talent then judge it. But for now it is not even on the radio worth listening to Radar! Gotta say I can't stand Charlie though either....they are all over the place with the tunes......do not like the chatoic playlist and program shifts!

Does anyone think a Power Ballad station could do very well. Take all of the really great hair band ballads and some of the cheesier music from Air Supply and Asia etc. etc. along with power ballads from Van Halen, Styx, Journey, Foreigner, etc, etc. You think there is enough tunes to make a decent playlist from that would not sound repetative and old after a week? Would it capture enough of the 25-45 female demo to pay the bills? Would it be a flavor of the month format? Just curious cause you do not here those power ballads to much.

Be careful what you wish for DT. The air might be thick with the smell of lighter fluid somewhere as a group of folks who are bankrupt in the idea department sway to Bon Jovi and mull it over. Or should I say, mullet over. :0)

The problem with the new music is the same problem with "healthy" fast food. Sure, you can order a salad, but it still tastes like fry oil. Until major label rock is wrestled from the handful of boring producers and smaller cadre of compression happy mastering engineers, it is all still gonna taste like cardboard.

When I read Dodger's post, I didn't get the impression that he was trying to say that there is any connection between these two things. I took it that he meant that people are getting jaded with the frivolous way that some entertainment uses depictions of sex and violence to get attention. Maybe there is some truth in that, and for some people, Christian-themed music fills the emotional need for something with more substance.

I haven't heard The Fish in awhile. I did fill in for three days a couple of years ago and did enjoy the music that I was able to play.

When we go on a long road trip with the kids I have pre-made cassettes (yes cassettes, it's an 11 yr old van) anyway..the music on the cassettes is pre-mixed to sound like a radio station but it's fun, lyric friendly music that covers, Christian Contemporary, Classic R&B, lots of local NW bands and some classic 80s rock I like. The kids know these cassettes so well that they have come to enjoy them even more as the years pass.

As for playing a radio station on the long road trip...never happens. I'd rather talk with my wife and plan our future when the kids are out of the house. Kids have their own ideas about that. Makes for a pretty interesting ride over several long hours.

Hi Sheryl-

No such luck with an easy to use editing software for my wife to use. She admits that production is not her strength. Evidently I'm a lousy teacher too. Need something very basic, but since I'm in Pro Tools land I really don't know what's out there.

Chris...take a listen sometime....it is pretty good...maybe even some good stuff you can record online and copy it to on of dem thar cassette thingy's. I recently re-discovered my stash of 200 cassette tapes from my high school days....they sound terrible (mostly due to age) compared to CD's today! But there are some things in there pretty hard to find these days! I may try to copy and clean some up one of these days!

I agree with this. We will play the radio sometimes, but not often. Sporting events, special programs with few spots, NPR, etc...

Road conversations are often some of the best we have. There is lots to talk about --and there is always a great game of slug bug.

Hey Darktemper KGON's music is stale! Seriously how many times can you hear the same sonngs OVER AND OVER day after day! I love classic rock but im tired of their limited playlist. I like Charlie because the music is good and not just classic rock.
You're telling me you can't hear Stevie Wonder followed by Van halen??? Thats great! Charlies music is pretty damn good in my opinon. By far the best station on the radio, and you hear
DIFFERENT SONGS every day which is refreshing~ Their are plenty of listeners like myself that actually want some VARIETY in there music. Plus Charlie plays James Brown and johnny Cash. Two artists that get very little airplay in portland radio!
As far as Movin goes, Im not wasting my breath on that station. Put a fork in it its done with!! No dj's, WTF???? How long have they been on the air for! Rediculous! They are putting on a poor product, and it SHOWS!!!! This time next year Novin will be a new Flavor of the month station!

Actually I have started to sample alternatives as my family does not like my station of choice. Did you catch the A to Z promo? KGON has started adding some more tunes from that into the play list but I guess I have to agree with you to a point. I like my ZUNE for the main reason of all of the great B side classics that are often better than the top 40's from the A sides. They need to be brought out and revived and if done then you would probably see their ratings climb. When my family is in the car we now listen to mostly 104.1 or 97.1. When it is just me and the SO it will be either 104.1 or 99.5. I have sampled 94.7 in the mornings but prefer 104.1 or my ZUNE for music in that time slot. I only occasionally will tune to 101.1 out of morbid curiosity on how the trainwreck in progress program is doing....just to see if they have had a head on collision yet! So that's pretty much how it stands from me man.
Did not mean to dig on you but I do agree that so long as 107.5 is on auto pilot it is not worthy to listen to so until they get a live show lets just leave that one lay! I at one time was pissed as I loved Rock Hits but have moved on and quit (mostly) bitching about them. When they get a live show let's re-review it after it get's up and running.

Dark, that's what the drivers handicap rule is for!

We play it like this:

Once a game has started*, the driver has until the first slug bug called and counted, to claim their +2 slugbug starting safety bonus! After that, it's game on as usual.

*Cannot start a game of slug bug with a slug bug called! Unfair advantage to the initiator.

(Yeah, it's twisted, but we have the beginnings of a small pamphlet on how to play slug bug! Search the archives here for more!)

I agree, Neither can I, quite honestly. I even have a rule regarding the "Fish" playing in my truck, particularly with passengers: We either listen to 94.7, 101.1 (although not nearly as much as I used to, thinking of dropping it from presets), 95.5 (again, not as much as I used to), KBOO or Golden Hours. Either that or just listen to the noise produced by the engine!

But the Fish? That one's a big-old no-no when I am driving. (Even Charlie's has tended to be largely off-limits.) And Movin? Bleeahhhhh. **sticks tongue out and makes disgusted face** Gag me with a spoon, please.

Normally I'd state my true feelings about the sanitary, stagnant family-friendly stations like Fish but will abstain from doing so here, on the basis of the fear I will merely be dismissed as homophobic...............
