Just got word from an E-Mail friend that another of Portland's old record stores is closing down. "For What it's Worth Records" at 5924 S.E. 47th Ave. in the Woodstock District has lost it's lease and will be going out of business around the 1st of March.

That's really sad news. When they were on the west side, I remember spending over two hours on Tri-Met to complete a mission for vinyl. Good folks who knew the music.

It is getting to be a long list of shops I loved that have shuttered for good. I am sure I am leaving a bunch out, but off the top of my head, Bird's Suite, Ooze, Crocodile, Singles Going Steady, Park Avenue, Vagabond, Hey Joe, Yesterday, Eeek! and Rockport -- but thankfully, Dave has the massive selection at Crossroads to explore!

. . .want to feel real old. . .how about 'Eager
Beaver's' shop on N. Williams ave? They were way ahead of the curve on latest jazz.
And, of course, back in the 50's--6th avenue records in downtown on Broadway was the one of the biggest record stores in town.

I went to the Eastport Plaza Hunter's once a week after school and picked up a KISN survey. I remember the 45s were 94 cents, not the lowest price in town but I usually bought there anyway. Hunter's at Eastport came after his other location in Hollywood, Lloyd Center area or somewhere around there. Mr Hunter sold out after about 49 years and sadly, soonafter took his own life.

Craig, I think House of Sound was on Williams. I'd almost forgotten Ott's.

Dudley's ended in a bizarre way as I recall.

We should have the all-time record shop directory in the history section. After all, that is where the disc jockeys sent us to get our fix!

Copernicus, I would agree. The Eastside (Woodstock) shop was never anything like the old Beaverton shop. So, it's not a surprise.

What does this leave us though? Of course there's EM (Everyday Music), CD Game Exchange, and the fabulous Crossroads. Reverb on Hawthorne. There's one on Clinton St. I can't recall the name.

There was also East Side Records on SE 28th, then it reappeared as Hawthorne records on Hawthorne and about 45th.
A smaller version of Reverb still exists in a corner of Crossroads (they closed in December).

Back in 71-72 there was a small record/head shop in the Hollywood district called the 3rd Eye. Anyone remember that?? I remember buying black light posters there and Grand Funk's "E Pluribus Funk" with Footstompin Music on it....ahhh good times..

YOU GOT THAT STRAIGHT. Peeled off the price reduction sticker on some stuff. original price say was $10.00. Closeout blowout special damn best sale price tag read $15.00 with 30% off making it an incredible bargain at $10.50....

$.50 higher than their regular price!!!!! Like I said just do it online with Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or EBay and you will get it cheaper most of the time! SALES....I SCOFF AT THEM.....SCOFFFFFF AT THEM. Over hyped gimmicks to make the last big buck before screwing their employee's by shorting them on their last paycheck's!

Well....for what its worth is not what is was once worth so it probably will relocate to the record store graveyard. The one right under the internet download mp3 super center. Just bring in your SCHTICK and dwonload for .50 a tune! No more CD's just crappy old MP3's with no depth!

Sam Goody will be doing that shortly if not some stores already!

I refuse to shop there.

I don't get it. I don't understand the need to cram 10,000 songs onto an IPOD with crappy quality instead of 1,000 with great quality. I would take the quality over quantity anyday of the week.

"There's one on Clinton St. I can't recall the name."

Warner, there are two on Clinton right by the theater. The tiny worker-owned Q is for Choir and the larger Green Noise -- Portland version of a great store I always visited when I was in Eugene.

Wasn't there once a great record store in old downtown Milwaukie?

The current Third Eye is on Hawthorne. Got my Crumb fix there years ago. I agree, although it is a head shop like the old upstairs at Millenium, I don't remember music at that location.

Freddy's on Interstate has a great picture of the old record department in the window -- much like the one you describe 62kgw.

Not a store per se, but as I recall, Bruno's Rock and Shop fundraisers at Pine Street were a treasure trove.

>>Randy, how about House of Records in Eugene? That's a fun place to root around in.

Eugene's House of Records, a mostly used store, is definitely a survivor, having outlasted many competitors since 1971.

Most of the record/CD chains have left Eugene as well (Sam Goody, Fye/Disk Jockey, Camelot). All that's left are the two book chains, Borders, and B&N, locally owned CD World, and a couple of used stores.

Is Mr. Mike's Used Records still around in Eugene? Used to go there all the time to buy and sell. The price was $3.50 for used albums. While in college I could afford to buy a few and still have money left over for a six pack of Hamm's.

I'm glad to see someone mention that the Tower "sale" was an utter travesty. If they had priced everything at $5-10 they could have blown it all out in a couple of days. Instead, the thing dragged on for months and probably cost more in labor and overhead than it took in.

Agreed. That Tower "sale" was borderline criminal.

I went over there hoping to pick up some good music at a decent price. Paltry reductions and not worth it.

No wonder they went belly up.

Holy CRAP Randy ! I can't believe u remember that Numme and I ran that branch of Mr. Mikes.
(Actually we ran it right into the ground)

I do remember us having a full case of sealed copies of Billy Thorpes "Children of the Sun".. that at the time we couldn't move at 25 cents each . At one point many years later they were worth 100x that .

AND .. I remember Morrys in Tigard.. bought my first copy of Aerosmith "Rocks" there :P

First album I ever bought? "Steppenwolf the 2nd" at the DT M&F.. 6th floor.

Thanks for the memories!

Yes! Craig Moerer's mail order outfit has been around for years. 20 years ago I remember his ads in Goldmine and other record publications. I've bought records from Craig but never checked out the location.
