Yes, many of my friends like this site. But, for my ears, the bit rate is a little too low, sounding a bit like a ghetto blaster in a phone booth.

Advertise your corny internet-radio bullshit elsewhere. That site is retarded times ten; a perfect example of why terrestrial radio has nothing to fear in the short term...

Charlie in my opinion is still by far the best station in portland. I just wish they would stop playing so much of this Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox 20 CRAP!

If I have to listen to modern music then I will tune into 104.1
It has a very modern Rock Sound on a lot of songs and the lyrics are positive and not depressing as most all other alternative rock!
My daughter's favorite station! Good for Her!

wow O3 cold!!!

Dfresh, good is subjective, hell, I think I'm GOOD. What I think is good, you may not like, and vice versa.

Some of the stations are not living up to their potential, and for the most part it's a management call rather than a programming call

Check out Pandora. It is internet radio that learns what type of music you like.

BTW, I still spend lots of time listening to Portland AM & FM radio.

I cna't stand KINK especially that segment they have thats full of elevator music. I think its on Saturday night. It puts me to sleep its so damn boring. I think its called "Lights out" because it literally puts you to sleep. If I wanted to hear elevator music i would......Go ride on an ELEVATOR!

On the other hand, "Lights Outs" into its 3rd decade -- a sure indicator of a decent-sized and loyal audience. Its also on 5 days a week -- and NOT on Saturdays. Me thinks your comments are ill-developed. Take the stairs and change the dial man!

Lights Out has been an institution for years and it indeed does run Monday through Friday. I have been a KINK listener since it's first day on the air and Lights Out is one of my favorite shows. It's obvious to me that there are formats that a person doesn't like, however that is the reason that they put a tuner on a radio...you find what you like and YOU DON'T DEGRADE OTHERS SO THAT YOU CAN GET YOUR JOLLIES...Everyone is entitled to an opinion, however if you don't like it DON'T Listen...you complain about KINK,Z100, about Movin', KGON according to you is boring, you even complain about some of the music that's on the station you like...Charlie FM

I think it's safe to say that there isn't a radio station anywhere that is going to play to your satisfaction 100% of the time...if Charlie plays too much Goo Goo Dolls according to you, there will be someone who perhaps doesn't feel like they play enough...

Please be more constructive in your critisism and put some thought into what you write...

I took "Lights Out" for granted, as I tuned into KINK only occasionally...and then I moved away in 1989. Brought the whole family back for an Oregon Christmas, and rediscovered "Lights Out" all over again. It's unique...and it so fits Portland! At least I have a chance to listen online if I'm up late enough. Regrettably, the flow is not the same on the "Lights Out 24/7" stream, but it's better than nothing! I've never heard anything like it anywhere else...

I though it runs Sunday thru Thursday evenings, instead of M-F...

Wasn't "Lights Out" the beginning of the NAC format that evolved to Smooth Jazz?

I'd say both "yes" and "no"... KINK was ahead of its time in the 80s by mixing artists like Bob James into their regular mix... The artists that play(ed) what I know as "Windham Hill" or "Narada" music would be featured more on "Lights Out," with a very occasional spin during the regular format.

When Smooth Jazz came into being as a format (KYOT in Phoenix was one of the early stations into the format), KINK split off that music out of their mix, which was smart on their part I guess, but it tampered with the overall mix of the KINK I knew. Still, KINK has always been unique, much the same as KNX-FM was to L.A. in the 70s... KTWV in L.A. would be more of an accurate comparison to KINK. I never heard "The Wave"...maybe someone else can weigh in on this...

Still, KINK maintains a very distinctive sound, even if the occasional smooth jazz flavoring has long since been filtered out. And "Lights Out" still maintains close attention attention to mood and flow. THAT'S what makes it special!

Mmmmmm...ocean!

I like Lights Out........helps me keep my nerves calm during those late-night drives fuelled by gallons of coffee consumed throughout the day!!

(Also a taped Lights Out programme does make the drive post-dusk between Biggs and Pendleton all the more worthwile. ;o)

How is Kink Unique today, seriously?? Besides this Lights out show, which puts me to sleep, they play the same overplayed crap as the other stations play.
How is Goo Goo Dolls, Match Box 20 unique??? How many times do they need to play the Black Crowes "hard To handle" or Sheryl Crow? Every time i turn that station on the music they are playing so so mainstream. People brag about how unique that format is yet everytime I hear them they are playing the most overplayed, tiresome artists that every other station in portland is playing. How many stations in portland are playing Train, John Mayor, Sheryl Crow besides kink?? k103, The Buzz, Charlie. I understand that people like crap like Train and matchbox 20, but calling KINKs playlist unique is a false statement today! I have to agree with Timberfake, artists like Matchbox 20 and Goo Goo Dolls are way overplayed in portland and WAY Overrated!!!

Id say The Mountain KMTT here in Seattle would compare. Ive said this many times that Kink was at its best with Jeff Douglas lots of folk accoustic and never heard any hard rock. For a time I thought KINK was the best of its kind around. Lights out is good. With the withdrawl of jazz, today KINK is more mass appeal in what it presents with exception of the specially programs.Kink is unique still in that its has a history and goes with the music trends of the time. If it's no more Fairport Convention and today it's The Goo Goo Dolls then thats what KINK will showcase. If I'm going to hear this music then Id go to kink or a stn like it. Do I like KINK now? No not as much as an earlier time. In spite of music tweeking and different air people KInk is OK.BTW someone said John Grappone left KINK. Any info? I enjoyed Accoustic Sunrise

I don't know what you mean by "hard rock". KINK played Hendrix and Joplin(Janis, not Scott). They got softer in the mid-70s.

Didn't KINK play just a bit of Bolcomb's remarkable 1970 ragtime album "Heliotrope Bouquet"? I must have heard it somewhere, as I spent some of my precious paper-route money on a copy.

Early KINK was about as eclectic as a commercial station could be (though I presume those first years were pretty much "sustained" by King). From Jimi and Janis, LZ, Airplane, Jethro Tull, Who and ELO to Collins, Baez, Axton, Paxton, Seeger, Arlo, Joni, Ronstadt, Wainwright, Newman, Miller, NGDB, Kottke, CJ-Fish, Wonder, Cohen and Heep. It was fascinating.

(Of course we also had to endure some CTA, ELP, CSN/Y, DB, Diamond, Dylan, Denver, Eagles and Stones, but they were hunting for their market.)

When I returned to Portland in the mid-80s and first caught "Lights Out" I was astonished, having heard nothing like it before. (A minute of chirping crickets between tracks!) There have been somewhat similar formats which diminishes the memory of its uniqueness at the time. Unfortunately I usually worked swing and missed most of them.
