Okay....after the fourth night running maybe time for a thread to find new ways to battle the sleep thief! What ways do you (legal ways) battle Insomnia? Drug's not an option and alcohol has bad side effects if ya know what I mean!

Any home remedies?

My friends sister used to put a few pieces of onion in a jar,and take a whiff before getting into bed.
She said it worked..I dunno, their mom was a but 'nuts',so who knows. YMMV!

Yes! "Calms" works well. Hyland's also makes "Nerve Tonic" which also works if you're under a lot of pressure. Another non-Rx is "Melatonin". I buy the Schiff brand and it also works well.

I used to have this problem a lot.

I run 4 miles at about 8:00 PM, rain or not. (walking would probably do as well).
Followed by a hot shower & then a book, nothing heavy.
Currently reading Cussler.

1. Bob Ross's painting show on OPB, make audio or visual copies. His voice is sooooo soooothing, my sis swears by it.

2. I used a subliminal sleep CD and listened via headphones in bed years ago, it still works if I do "the touch" (hand on heart).

hah my grandmother SWORE by his painting show Mrs. M ... "Make sure your trees are HAPPY trees!"

I remember a Far Side cartoon where he was saying that, and a tree fell through his house and killed him.

Elixir for insomnia? BEER, and lots of it. I visited a friend of mine in Phoenix once when he was in tech school ... in mid-August. The ONLY way I slept was to drink enough beer to pass out, and when I came to I would drink more until I passed out again. I took about 20 years off my life in that one week.

I tried with the ZUNE and ear buds last night and play Pink Floyd pulse concert at very low volume and that took the edge of enough to finally get two hours of sleep from 6:00 to 8:00am.

Will look in some of the other things mentioned.....Thanks!

If you ever wondered why I chose "DarkTemper" for a screenname.....well just come visit me today and do something to piss me off.....trust me it don't take much on day's like these to figure that out!

I had a friend once who said he had a sure fire cure for his wifes insomnia. Anytime she had a bout of insomnia all he had to do was mention "Sex" and she went out like a light! LOL

A lot of beer will make you sleep but the other problem with a lot of beer is that darn bed just keeps going round and round and round!

Even hanging your leg over the edge to stop it doesn't always work!

After a while.....well, refer back to the first part of Amus's post above!

Hah Skybill, I always enjoyed the spins. I would pick my leg up and drop it and repeat just to make it start and stop and start again. I'd get my friends puking when they would do the same thing ...

My goodness, I was a reckless young lad.

My wife is like a Cement brick in bed, I have no other choice than to turn to internet Porn. We have only been married for two years, after the first year the sex ended cold turkey! If I knew that was going to happen, I never would have gotten married in the first place!!!!

I used to have a hard time get to sleep, I take a 3mg tablet about 20 minutes before I want to fall asleep. It seems to work great for me. You can purchase 300 tablets at Costco for slightly less that $6.

..the thrill is gone! Beano, I feel for you man! It sucks, doesn't it?

Well, we've been through that at times. Right now is one of those times, but she really does not feel well. Surgery this week guys! I'm hoping it all goes well. For us, this comes with stress because of financial issues that come along for the ride. (Those two are on the list below)

Coupla things to look at:

-is she feeling well?

-are you in a rut?

-are you doing the same things that got her going before? Can you list these things? If so, change it up a little. If not, WTF man? Get with it.

-have you failed to respond to her?

A couple of these and a rut can easily start where you both are reinforcing in a negative way.

-tried some romance?

This one works, but it's gotta be sincere. Either you hit one outta the park, or it's ugly. Think it all the way through.

-are your life goals realistic, given your finances?

This one can creep up on you too. Set expectations too high, or fail to adapt to life changes and you can get sucked into a stressful time and feel trapped.

We are currently digging our way outta one of those, and it's not easy.

THAT IS WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE!! Seriously, sexual incompatability has broken up a lot of marriages, thats why you need to explore before you get married!

Agreed Mayo, but this can happen no matter how good it fits!

(there are no sure things, which is probably a point in favor of NSBM...)

I avoid the OTC sleepers. Nasty stuff. Maybe the newest ones are better --I've not needed them yet.

A friend gave me some herbal stuff that works well. On the jar, it says, "Sleep Like A Baby". I've only needed them a coupla times, they worked.

Usually, I do this when I can't sleep:

Start at your toes and flex each muscle, finding the relaxed state. Work your way up until you fall asleep.

Keep eyes closed and just find that comfort state for each part. Don't stress over it, just find the neutral state of each muscle group. If you are not sure, move on to the next one.

I do this with all media turned off, maybe a fan running and that's it. I drop off pretty quick nearly every time.

I'm busted! Why do you guys think I'm on here so late at night? Missing, I am forwarding that one to Mr. M....

Rut, Rut, Rut.

And I'm talking the wagon-wheel type, not elk-mating season.

Hey, and good luck on the surgery stuff!

Beano,

I used to have a cartoon on the fridge; it showed a couple standing at the altar, both with the little thought balloons above their heads:

Him: Great! Now I get to have sex whenever I want!

Her: Great! Now I never have to have sex again!

I am an owl and she has to work so early that I make her coffee before I go to bed. I feel empathy for you all.

On the sleepy tip, not to roll out the obvious, but warm milk really does work wonders. Sure, there are chemical reasons, but I think a lot of it is just relaxing, sipping and winding down.

Im lactose intolerant, I drank a warm glass of warm milk the other night and almost blew my girlfriend out of the bed, and let me just say they were the loudest Riper snorters i have ever heard. My girl goes to bed with a gas mask every time I have milk products before bed time. Very smart woman!

Hey Merkin, and people wonder why over half of all marriages end up in divorce. I think lack of sex makes up at least 75% of them.

I second the recomendations of Melatonin (works wonderfully as it doesn't make you feel drowsy at all but as soon as your head hits the pillow 80% of the time you are out like lights)

Also Chamiomelle tea

On the illegal side a couple of tokes of good ganja works wonders.

And all of the above three suggestions don't leave you with side effects in the morning.

Gee, I forgot to mention Melatonin in my post above. Here is my post again (revised):

I used to have a hard time get to sleep, I take a 3mg tablet [of Melatonin] about 20 minutes before I want to fall asleep. It seems to work great for me. You can purchase 300 tablets at Costco for slightly less that $6.
