Entercomm killed oldies 910/1390 and resumes simulcast of The Fan on 1390. Seattle Mariners radio switches from KCCS 1220 to KYKN 1430 for the 2007 season, per the Mariners media page. Will Mariners be blacked out on 1390, protecting KYKN?

Good question. I do remember KVAN running the broadcasts -- for at least a season -- after the Fan got the contract. I'm really looking forward to Dave Sims debut with the broadcast team.

As grateful as I was to have the Mariners broadcast in Salem last year, listening on KCCS was insufferable. Prosylitizing during commercial breaks aside, sometimes there would be entire innings with 2 different program feeds. Either way, this is good news.

Sorry for the mistakes amus, you should have offered to come and help, one guy can't do it all. The better question here is, how will kykn broadcast Volcano's baseball and Mariners at the same time, having a contract with both? Think the owner of the Volcanos will be pleased to hear this?

My first job in radio was recording basketball play by play to tape for delayed broadcast when there were two games in conflict. The station was heavy into local high school sports and didn't want to displace those games. The conflicting team? An upstart NBA team - the Portland Trail Blazers. The station was KSLM. Moved 'Blazers to FM the next season. Anyway, I don't supppose that KYKN will tape delay either the Mariners or the Volcanoes, but perhaps KCCS can co-opt Mariners on conflict days. Aren't they still under a joint management agreement? Today's Big Game was available in Salem on both KSLM and KYKN.

Dodger, No personal slight intended. I've heard your work before and respect it. Your "One guy can't do it all" comment indicates where the problem is. I'm lucky. When I screw up, I work a few extra hours and nobody is the wiser. As far as your suggestion that I come down and help? That would only make more work for you. I'd be like a 2 year old in a toybox.

"Will Mariners be blacked out on 1390, protecting KYKN?" Sean Hannity was on two Eugene stations, 590 AM (KUGN) and 660 AM. It was allowed because 660 AM was a repeater station for KPAM.

Farm off the Mariners or Volcanoes to another station when they conflict? Interesting idea, considering they'll conflict (I think) close to 3/4 of the time during the entire Volcanoes season. As far as one can can't do it all, that's just an excuse. If you screw up, own up to it(at least to yourself) and learn from it.

outsider: ever tried to run everything from programming, to sales, to promotions to the weather to the news to recording all programming to downloading weekend shows etc ad nauseum by yourself? No excuse, just the facks jack. when I say only one person I mean ONE person. Did I screw up? Nope, was I overrun? Yep. Nuff said.

....Author: Dodger Tuesday, February 06, 2007 - 5:26 pm outsider: ever tried to run everything.... Everything? No. Not quite to the extent you claim, which, quite honestly I find pretty hard to believe. I do understand what it's like to be overrun. However, what it comes right down to it, if it's my butt at the controls, it's my responsibility. It may not be ALL my fault, but it didn't make me feel any better, especially at the time. And it'll still be viewed as an excuse. The way you explain it, I can only assume that when you were at whatever station you are talking about, that the station had no jocks, no PD, no ND, no GSM, no Promotion Director, no weekend staff, no traffic director, no staff at all other than you. Is that what you are expecting everyone to believe?

nope, had a traffic person, had to train the receptionist from the company that shared the building in how to use Natural Log. She did traffic. Had an engineer on call to fix the "big" problems. This is not kykn I am talking about. There is that better? Whether you or anyone else believes me or not doesn't matter, I am just trying to defend a really crappy situation that caused a lot of stuff to go wrong like the mentioned Mariners broadcasts. Our automation was Digital Jukebox and between the software maker and myself we created a Sports program to carry the Mariners without a board op but it didn't always work and would lock up in the middle of a Mariners game and miss a switch and so amus would hear Dr. Dobson or some other program until I could drive down and reboot the automation software. Anyway, that was my bed and I laid in it for a few months, now I am happy to be free of all of that and just play a lot of golf now. The question I originally posted is still valid, how is kykn going to play the volcanos and the mariners without pissing off the owner of the local team, volcanos and at the same time not break contract obligations with the mariners?

Yes, much better. I can sleep tonight. You obviously didn't do everything, so why say you did? But, I can relate to the problems with tape delayed sports. A Portland Beavers tape-dalay at KAAR in 1981 got screwed up, because it was inevatible. But, it was me at the controls(Yes, I was the famous "Phantom Tape Man of KAR Radio.") But, I took responsibility for it, fixed the problem and moved on. I'm glad you got away from that disaster though. As far as your original question though, I don't see how they can effectively run both teams. There'll be too many conflicts, unless plans are for one team to be on another station. Too many tape delays or too many farm outs and the one team, likely the Volcanoes, will lose listeners and advertisers.

I guess this would be considered part of KOHI thread but on their website says they are also carrying the Mariners. If Entercom is carrying the games how can these guys carry it. St. Helens isn't that far from Portland......

Outsider says: You obviously didn't do everything, so why say you did? Oh, dang you're right I did have that traffic person, the secretary that had never seen a log before, who didn't know what a "spot" was, who had to be explained what PSA's are. I forget, I wasn't alone. You'll never know. Back to kykn's situation: a birdie tells me that the Volcanos will get burned. Gonna be a po'd Pat Lafferty when he finds out.
