KOIN News 6 is now broadcasting the news show in high def wide screen. I expect the other local broadcasters to follow soon

Although it's wide screen, it isn't any more HD than it ever was. Notice that the promos refer to "widescreen digital" but make no mention of high definition.

Probably upconverted. Most late model cameras can do both 4X3 and 16X9. Not necessarily HD. I believe OPB is the only local station with HD cameras studio cams.

KOIN newscasts are in the widescreen format, not High Def. I think this move was done. Just a few days before the Super Bowl. So KOIN could look good during February sweeps.

I finally broke down and bought an HDTV. Would it be to much to ask for an exclamation or better yet a list of what's on expanded basic above channel 71? Thank you!

I don't have any info about cable line-up... but have you tried OTA HD? There are several extra channels on the HD transmitters that are not broadcast in analog. For example, KGW has a 24 hour weather channel, KOPB has an all HD channel, and a channel called Create, and have just added something like an Oregon C-SPAN (called OC). 22 & 24 do not broadcast in HD, but use their digital transmitters to multicast 4-5 standard definition channels. KRCW also runs a music video channel "The Tube". With the exception of ch 22, which broadcasts digital on ch 4, these are all UHF channels, but they have lots of power and are fairly easy to receive.

I've found about half the channels you mentioned on the cable between channels 2 & 71. It's the additional 300 channels I haven't figured out. I just bought it yesterday.

If you are on Comcast, you have to order their HD digital box to get HD channels on the Comcast system. They are all in the 700 channel range. Otherwise you will need a separate outdoor antenna to get the local stations in HD. And you have to have a HD tuner either built-in or as a set top addition. There was a news item on KOIN about how some TV retailers were pushing the HD sets without informing the customers as to how to receive the HD signals.

I think that's only on the box. If you just plug in the cable, KGW is 8.0, KGW-DT 8.1, KGW Weather 8.2 etc.
