God I love that stuff. All industrial and symmetrical.

Right up my alley. In fact, I've been working on ( in my head ) on a new logo for my new broadcast using a test pattern template.

They are one of the last untainted pop culture icons.

I may as well taint them.

I remember during the 1970's, when KPTV would sign off. Someone came along and just switched off a light bulb. That was the good ole days of KPTV.

A few years ago, the OPB television stations were signing off at night.

Regarding the "test pattern classics" page above, I found it interesting that some stations, mainly DuMont affiliates, put little stars on their test patterns. I wonder how these stars would have looked when displayed on NTSC (the test pattern pictures have higher resolution). Besides looking cool, the stars would have served as an indication that your CRT focused uniformly.

When I was at KATU we found an old Indian Head T.P. Generator in the pile of old stuff up at the XMTR/Uplink and fixed it up (the image tube was still in pretty good shape) and put it on the router. I used to use it occasionally on uplinks. It got a lot of feedback from folks on the downlink end.

Cool! Do you know if they still have that thing? How many functional monoscope pattern generators and monoscope tubes could there possibly be in existence these days? Another thing that I've wondered is how did they guarantee a linear sweep of the electron beam in the monoscope tube? Did this tube use electrostatic deflection?
