US Scientists have discovered that when a small area of a smoker's brain is damaged it often makes them quit smoking easily. It is possible that this discovery could lead to treatments that target that same area of the brain to help smokers give up the habit.

The study is published in the current edition of Science.

A neuroscientist at the University Southern California in Los Angeles, Dr Antoine Bechara, conducted the study with two colleagues.

You didn't have to tell me that most smokers are brain damaged.
Any one who would put that toxic crap in their body is obviously missing a few brian cells. But If thats really what they want to do than they can keep smoking and enjoy a nice long painful death.

But this brain damage helps people to STOP smoking. What is fascinating about this is that there is an area of the brain (the insula) that appears to process the urges associated with addictions. According to the story, increased activity occurs here just when smokers look at pictures of people smoking! It will be interesting to see what types of addictions could be controlled with selective brain damage to the insula: nicotine? alcohol? hard drugs? gambling? overeating? pornography? shopping?

Pop Tarts and YooHoo? Sign me up!

But only if they can leave most of the other adjacent areas (above) unscathed! Micro Brews? Champagne? eBay? Sushi? Survivor/Lost/House/Jeopardy? Leave those alone, please!

Pop Tarts!!!!!! Haven't had them in years - thought I had kicked them! Oh, well, I still have my poppy seed muffins to feel guilty about. Just don't ask me to take a drug test. (Considering I've never even tried a joint, wouldn't it be ironic if I failed a drug test due to poppy seeds? Or is that just an urban myth?)

You can fail a drug test from poppy seeds, but it takes a lotta seeds.

Count me in to any local Pop Tart meetings! Those things are criminal.

Only if you eat at Crapplebees. I've heard they have it on every TV screen. And the menu. And in the kitchen.

And why does the big box of Pop Tarts at Costco include so many "brown sugar & cinnamon"? Why can't they all just be fruit. Kellogg's should be more concerned about our fruit consumption in this day and age. I eat those last out of sheer desperation when the cupboards are bare.

(Truthfully, I only liked them while PG; those and Crystal Light Slurpee Big Gulps from the "Sev" at 3AM. Gross, I know)

The fruit Pop Tarts wouldn't be so bad if they had enough fruit (or fruit-like substance) filling to actually taste. They are all-crust. Kellogg's breakfast bar thingys are the same way, mostly crust and little filling.

And yes, porn can be an addiction, just as most anything can. http://saa-recovery.org/

That's exactly why I like the things! There is just enough of the filling to make you want to eat a couple more of the things.

One is just never enough.

(And I often put butter on them too.)

My rule on these treats is that I don't buy them. If they are in the house, it's me -vs- the kids and I stay up late...

Mrs KSKD regulates the Pop Tarts. I'm just not up to the task!

Lo! Shiny silver packets from Area 51!

Which reminds me, I love the breakfasts at "Biscuits" cafe's, I've been to both the one on 52nd & Sandy, and the one on Beaverton-Hillsdale next to the Tillicum. Yum!

Big jars of berry homemade jam at your table for those little fluffy pillows of heaven, and great omlettes & spuds as well. I recommend the #11...ground chorizo, green chilis, sour cream, etc. or the scramble...

Mrs. M, There's a Biscuits here in Vancouver at 76th and 117th right by the Lowe's.

I agree the breakfasts there are great. My wife and I eat there every so often. As you mentioned the jam is fantastic!

If you want more food than you can eat and a very reasonable price, try the omelets at Carol's Corner at 78th street and St. Johns here in Vancouver.

The 1/2 omelet is enough for 2 people!

Yum!

As far as I know, psychologists officially consider a preoccupation with pornography an obsessive-compulsive disorder, rather than a true addiction. But what if the person using the porn wants help because he believes that the images in porn are "competing" in attractiveness with his romantic parter or are somehow getting in the way of him finding a romantic partner who is satisfying? Would the therapy work in that case, and if it did, would it be ethical to take this route?

I would certainly stay away from the Area 51 Pop Tarts in the shiny wrappers. If you eat them, angry aliens may come after you and give you an anal probe! (See the Bad HAMs thread.)

Plus there are no bathrooms anywhere near Area 51, so if you accidently eat the shiny wrappers, you will be very easy to track, and then probe.

Pornography is an addiction, just like an alcohol or Coke addiction.
Your getting that "high" by spankin the monkey to adult or erotic images. You're satisfying the pleasure part of your brain, just what any drug like coke, heroin ect. would do. Sexual excitement is just as strong as a heroin high.
Sorry If I was overly graphic, just trying to state the obvious!
No Im not Dr. Ruth, but i do like to play her on tv.

The Buzzcocks once sang a song about pornography addictions: "Orgasm Addict." The lyrics can be found here (caution--some naughty words are used): http://www.plyrics.com/lyrics/buzzcocks/orgasmaddict.html
