I probably have too much time on my hands today, but I thought it would be fun to put together a list of the Top10 posters on PDXradio.com based on their profiles as of 1/24/07. Keep in mind this list only includes posters currently somewhat active, and I can't vouch for complete accuracy. If I missed someone, let us know!

Here we go, The Top 10 posters ranked by number of posts:

10. Craig Adams (2,578)
9. Randy in Eugene (2,715)
8. Herb (2,867)
7. Mrs. Merkin (2,998)
6. Andrew2 (3,723)
5. Radioexpert (4,000)
4. Semoochie (4,297)
3. Skeptical (5,001)
2. Trixter (7,261)
1. MissingKSKD (7,410)

Looks like a good battle between Trixter and Missing...Skeptical a strong 3rd, and a bunch right around the 4,000 mark. Congrats to our winners!

Hey Redford.....
Pretty good at the statistics thing! Are you in radio statistics or something! Surely you are not a Blazers score keeper as you would never need to know how to count over 80! Well maybe in the total number of fouls in one game! LOL
If Pete were still posting today he would be numero uno!

Alfredo said, "Damn" ?!?

It's a lotta posts for sure. What can I say? I've enjoyed all of your company. Hope to heck you've enjoyed mine.

A lot of my posts happen either when travelling on business, (that mostly sucks, would rather be home) or when doing remote admin, waiting for some PC somewhere to get done with whatever I asked it to do.

There isn't enough time to do something fun, like code or build. There is time for general surfing, but there is only so much of that one can take. So, it's IM, a coupla forums, or some radio stream...

And it's always fun to chat and listen to music at the same time.

(Now playing, SAGA "No Stranger")

Why is it that the lurkers make light of the frequent regular posters in this forum. It is these people that keep it going and alive! There are 2273 registered users and only about 50 frequent regualr posters here. The rest just lurk in the shadows, stalk if you will, waiting for someone to say the wrong thing or post to often then like a trap door spider they jump out and strike then return to their hole! I applaud the regular posters in this forum....it is better than all others I have been in. This is a great group of people here so post away Missing, Trix, and Skep! Post On!

Agreed. My reason for posting this list was mainly driven by admiration. Missing, you have no reason to even defend yourself. This successful website is driven by a relatively small number of multiple posters, but that's what keeps it going. The other 2,000 read and post mainly because of the regular posters! If you regulars were not there, the site probably would wither away. It's all good.

Was thinking about what you said. You are quite right in that a few of us keep things in motion. That's all good and likely how it should be.

It's funny, but a ton of people are willing to read, but only a few will contribute and fewer still contribute regularly. Regular contributions in any venue do expose the self. That's not easy and often scary.

I miss Reinstatepte as he helped this process along. I had not thought about how much, until this thread, that's all. The site is in fine form right now, and that's good, but it's not as good as it was prior to the mess last year.

That was hilarious!

Not so good for the drunk guy, but the rest of us, who happened to be online at the time, got some good entertainment out of the whole thing.

Randy bagged his troll that night, though no evidence remains. I saw it happen! I think he felt pretty good about it too!

Joamon tried to delete the thread by getting others to remove their posts. Of course a few of us jumped in, but not everyone.

That left Randy as the first post under a pretty obscene title. Hehe.. He got briefly bent, then gathered his wits about him and made a fine edit, declaring his observation of the troll in action!

A ripple or two later in the timeline, it all dissappeared into little bits as Dan did the right thing, putting it all to bed.

The funny thing was he (drunkard, whose username I'm not gonna repeat) finally got it! Started deleting like no other, with Joamon cheering him onto the older posts first!

Great stuff.

It turns out that this unnamed drunkard had done this before but Jo was unaware of that. After it was all said and done and deleted Jo started a thread praising Randy for standing his ground and got in hot water over that. That's why he's not around any more. He said it was a just decision and that it was OK. Had he known that he said he would have just waited and watched knowing it would come under scrutiny soon enough. Jo even knew the guys real name but said he would never reveal that under any circumstances no matter how bad. That was cool. Said it was just not right to do that to someone in spite of what they say or do under the veil of supposed anonymity!

JO says hi BTW!

Unless I missed something, I didn't think Joamon did anything to deserve being banned. While I did end up in a weird situation with his assistance, it didn't appear to be intentional. I vaguely recall him starting a thread with my name on it, but I simply took it as a joke related to the hilarity generated by the evening's events.

First of all, I'm called an extreme fascist. And you have a problem with me describing liberals here as 'left-leaning?'

Appears that you can dish it out, but not take even a miniscule amount in return.

Second of all, the most recent stat is indeed revealing...

I post 1.5 per day and am one of the few conservatives here. Guys like Trixter and Missing are posting 5-8x as many.

And liberals here whine about a few conservative voices? The 1st amendment appears acceptable only to democrats here.

This confirms what I've been saying all along. This board is a haven for leftists. Conservatives are not welcome here.

Ham-fist that.

Actually, the line has been, and will continue to be, support your stuff period.

The big discussions here, conflicts in particular, have always come down to failure to provide defensible support. We've a few personality issues from time to time, but those have been in the general minority.

Also, the general mix here is not black and white. Many of us appear to be socially liberal, but where matters of fiscal and military policy are concerned, we are all over the map.

If your view on things is defensible, the number of participants does not matter. There is time to consider posts, ability to research during that time, record of what what said, etc...

(Ok, so the record is smaller right now. No biggie, Dan's working on it!)

Nobody has been denied access to this forum for defensible speech, no matter the topic. The line on what is and what is not defensible is pretty slanted in favor of free speech as well.

IMHO, the smaller number of voices, aligned with yours Herb, comes down to these things:

-by percentage of Americans in general, the numbers here somewhat reflect current opinion

(there is a higher left leaning bias here on some topics, but not all topics, as I wrote above)

-a stiff line on defensibe speech held by many regulars

(BTW: I regularly ask for this because I want to learn stuff. Essentially, if you have it so right, bringing solid support to the table should be a non-issue, so where is it?)

-the PDX focus tends to bring more open minded people, by percentage than does a more national venue would

(This is easily supported by taking a trip through some other forums. I have done this and the line on defensible speech is lower, moderation is higher, etc...)

-registration required for posting.

(IMHO, this does sharply limit the number of contributors as casual comments are essentially filtered out, keeping signal to noise fairly high --this is a really good thing!)

The bottom line on this Herb, is there are enough open minded people here for speech of any kind to see an audience, given the audience is not abused.

There is a difference between being able to speak freely here (which you can do, given no abuse), and having said speech being accepted and or the views it may contain endorsed by others.

The former is permitted gratis. The latter must be earned and that is done with regular postings that are defensible and well supported. That's just how it is.

I personally, have learned a ton here from everyone. Some of my core ideals have shifted as a result of good, solid conversations here. I welcome that and grow from that. The quality of discussion here is the number one reason I continue to participate here. The quality of the people doing it, happens to be the number two.

On the radio side, it's the same, but my interest in radio would keep me reading, regardless of my decision to post or not.

Here on this part of the forum, there is nothing of value, unless we provide it period.

I decided to begin posting here, after reading for a coupla years, for these reasons:

-wanted to get involved with the radio stuff. It's fun and there is lots to learn.

-the political trend was disturbing to me. So, either I was fundementally wrong or misaligned with the greater good, or I was not. Only one way to find out. Post my stuff in the most defensible way I know how and hold those others advocating other views to the same standards.

What did I learn?

It's mostly crap. Want to change that Herb?

The door is open buddy. Sell me, sell others, or deal.

Oh I can eat my Crow Herb and have done so many times on this forum. I'm not upset with you or your beliefs as you tend to have facts for what you say and have a defensible position most of the time! I just don't like or agree with labeling!

Herb...I do not recall ever having called you a fascist or right winger. As for myself I average at this time 6.7 posts per day so that makes me #2 but I am conservative on some things and more liberal on others. That is why I always say that I am more of a centerline type of poster. But in reality I lean a little right of center more often.

Pardon me for being a bit touchy.

And you can call me Rodney King, because like you, I concur that we should 'all just get along.'

But few would appreciate being constantly called a Fascist and Nazi by others.

And labeling? I simply noted a factual association between posting frequency and political affiliation.

Something tells me that 'Ol Herb is not always the touchy one here.

...ahhh but where is the support Herb?

All the other stuff is just a distraction.

What you noted was faulty cause and effect. It's on the list of fallacies and dodges I used to post regularly here. Guess I'm gonna have to re-assemble those and put them up again.

Was kind of hoping to see it in the archives, but we are not there just yet.

How often / how long somebody has been contributing here has nothing to do with their political leanings. It's simply a function of their willingness to engage the venue period.

Want to avoid these kinds of discussions? (And if I were you, I would because it lowers credence and that diminishes the potential for effective advocacy.)

Perhaps you should have characterized all the political leanings as you saw them, not just cherry pick a few in particular.

Find that tough? You should really, as many here are all over the map.

You did label people after all. It's kind of hard to avoid some serious pushback when you do that.

Check out my post above. It does not label people specifically, yet gets the point across quite nicely. Why don't you try this again and make your point, sans the personal labels?

That way, you at least start off with something that could be defensible.

>>Semoochie ... longest registered poster: 65 months!

The registration dates are misleading due to a major software change and at least one site crash that required re-registration.

My time here pre-dates Semoochie's by at least several months. He and I were the first two posters with a specific interest in the engineering side of radio and we had many two-person threads.

The earliest archives go back to August 1997, but I think a single-thread conversation just prior to that was lost. I can't find a particular comment about KRRC that I vaguely recall posting near the beginning.

Many early posts appear to be from confused people who thought they were writing to a specific radio station. One comment I just found stands out.

Randy: You beat me to the punch on this! Forgot to check the politics side of pdxradio Thursday morning. I've been busy filling this week also and it's left me little time.

Randy's post above is absolutely right! You can't judge long time posters by the current numbering system. I'm a relative newcomer to pdxradio.

My first posts were in March 2001. I knew after reading the site and not posting, that once I did, I would be sucked in and not want out! At the time there was a struggle to get real answers to many early Portland Radio questions and I was sitting on a pile of data. As early as September 1997 Dan had written to me, via a letter, which I still have, trying to get me on his website.

I had no E-Mail, no computer and Kisn-FM had no website. But it was radio that pushed me into Twenty-First Century, kicking & screeming all the way! For years I posted my histories from the Kisn-FM Newsroom. (Very Appropriate don't you think?) By the way, its against CBS Radio policy to post messages on websites, using their computers, so you won't hear from me at K-Hits.

Getting to the number of posts. When I started posting I wasn't "Craig_adams" as such. I was "Craigadams". If you go the the history page, first thread, you can still see me as Craigadams, with my old E-Mail and last post, which was April 22, 2005. I had 1213 posts when I abandoned it. I didn't want to but had to. It got stuck when I tried to change my E-Mail and update my name the way it is today. I was also having problems with edits. It showed no past posts that I could edit. Then when Dan tried to get it set back up, it wouldn't take my new password. So I gave up on the old one and started a new one.

Redford: Putting together those two numbers from your countdown: 2578 + 1213 = 3792. And if you check the date of the start of my old profile, it was Dec 31, 2002 but it's on a post from 2001! By the way, according to the dates, Dan started posting just two days before me! So there you have it. You can't take those dates as gospel either.

Well, like I said, this was just for fun and based on the current profiles. If someone wants to go through the old profiles, be my guest! Happy posting!

Rock on! The regulars are what brings me back. This is a great group of people and if all of the over 2000 members posted it would get to cluttered so hail to Dan for keeping it under control and not letting it get out of hand!

On that note I may be due for a small donation to the cause just because!

*Warm Fuzzy Thread*

Doesn't it feel great to have these once in a while? We are a great group. It's almost never dull, that's for sure.

Glad to have you Dark!

Redford --thanks!

Thanks!

I enjoy yacking it up with this group. Far better group of people by far than others forum I have posted in! I have not figured out yet if I am the only outsider (listener) in the group or not. Maybe one day i'll start a PDX_FM_Listener forum some day! Would be interesting to get other peoples views on portland radio....maybe even a resource for research!

That's what makes this board so interesting...the mix of insiders and outsiders...and Darktemper you are by far not the only "listener"!

And thankyou, missing, for your warm & fuzzy and for your great, and I mean GREAT contributions!

I know I was not but sometimes especially on the RADIO side of the board it sure feels that way. When you try and sound out over there from the other viewpoint you usually but not always get squashed! Who are all just listeners on the forum? Does not count if you are employeed in any fashion in the industry.
Just Curious about the regulars not the once a month posters!

Would be cool to have it read:
Radio Pro Discussions
Listener Feedback and Opinions
Political on Other

I've been getting sucked in slowly over the last year into posting more and more. I keep a low profile only for technical reasons - I am generally unable to post from work, and at home I still have dialup with a clock running (60 hours a month). My ISP contract runs out in May and then I "must" (according to my 13-year old daughter) upshift to DSL. Then you might be seeing more of me here.

But it always makes for an interesting visit when I stop by pdxradio. I only recently came over to the non-radio side and now I feel more in my element, since I have only tangential experience in the industry. Thanks to everyone for the great posts.

Darktemper, I'm not it the broadcast radio business either, however I'm in the paging business and occasionally deal with radio and TV stations to lease space on their towers for our antennae and transmitters.

I've worked in electronics since I was 14 (that was a long time ago!) and have been in paging since 1980. Wow, I just realized that I've been in the paging industry for more than half my life! Never thought about it that way before.

This is a great board with some excellent people posting. I really only post on this board and the Ih8mud.com board (Ih8mud is dedicated to Toyota Land Cruisers).

Dan, I don’t know you, but from the other posts I have read, I have figured out that you are the moderator/owner of the board. GREAT job. Thanks for all your hard work!

"how did it get so famous?"

I'm going to say, opening up pdxradio to outside search engines. For many years this was not the case and it limited people discovering the site. Maybe Dan didn't want everyone outside radio to know about this site unless they heard word of mouth.

It also could have been a privacy issue, not letting the world read what we were saying and therefore giving us more freedom to post our true thoughts in a more conducive environment.

This might have changed when Dan opened up this newer area of the site, we are in now. A place to take non-radio issues. Dan might have thought he could better manage threads that were mis-posted by new members not understanding the purpose of the site.

When Dan opened up the site to search engines, I noticed an upsurge in new posters. If Dan had any worries, I think they were gone in a matter of months.

I remember that change. The main page was always found via search engines, but the commentary was not.

After Dan opened that up to the greater Internet search engines, we saw a nice spike. Some of them have remained, but many posted a few times then moved on.

Then we've got vgis! What's that stand for anyway? I've always wondered and appreciate the radio stream links you post from time to time.

We did this before, but it's beyond the current archive, so I think it's fair game:

What's your favorite username, and if you could have picked again, what would you have picked, if anything?

Mine are Skeptical and Reason. Elsewhere I am often found as potatohead! If I could pick again, I would probably have chosen potatohead as I'm used to it. But missing_kskd has been fun as people associated with KSKD here have contacted me with all sorts of info and conversation about what was probably my favorite station behind KBBT AM 970 "The Beat".

I can think of a few people who the name "Meno_Pause" would be appropriate for! LOL

Me...I think I would maybe go with "CobraJet"! But DarkTemper is a good description of my mood on BAD day's!

Jo had a good one "Joamon4sure"
"Jack of All Master of None 4 sure"
LOL

Just thought I'd stop by and check to see how things are going over here. I rarely remember this side even exists! I didn't realize Randy was here before I was because I didn't think the forum existed very long before I discovered it, as in hours! Before the forum, Dan posted local radio information with a link accessible from the front page of this site. This must have gone on for a couple of years, anyway. As soon as he put up a link for this forum, I was here. I can say that Randy was one of the first posters I remember.

Hmmm, maybe Semoochie did post on that original long-gone thread. His first clearly identifyable post in the existing archives was a few months after mine, but I may have wrongly assumed...

A computer connected to the internet magically appeared on my desk at work in the spring of 1996, and I discovered Dan's "Twisting the Dial" posts around that time.
