Senator Jim Webb, President Reagan's Secretary of the Navy, said it better in the Democratic response to Bush's SOTU address:

I started to read Herb's article, but happened to glance at the science news next to the article and got sidetracked by this...

What a Long Strange Trip It's Been:
Ecstasy, the new prescription drug?

I'll get back to Herb's item later.

Herb -- thanks for passing on the link. Interesting piece.

It must be so much fun to be able to write stuff while paying zero attention to the facts.

I have yet to hear any liberals refute it with facts and/or logic.

Gee, it's really a case of "where do you start" ... I got a full time job and family responsibilities, or I'd give it the three or four hours it deserves.

But just to start off with ... most knowledgable people know there is no military solution to Iraq, and that it is a distraction from the larger war on terror.

A gazillion troops in the middle east would do nothing to keep another score of angry young Muslims from hijacking planes in the US. Now we're letting Afghanistan slip down the tubes because of this misbegotten war in Iraq ... meaning the Taliban could soon be back in power in Kabul.

Besides, the president has lost credibility for getting us into war on flimsy grounds, and now Congress is talking about forming a council to offer regular feedback to Bush on his handling of things. In other words, they'll be checking the work of an incompetent executive.

Yeah, it really sucks to not have the time to fight willful ignorance.

I feel for him, I really do.

Except the war in Iraq is only slightly related to terrorism. The war was and is to ensure the continuation of trade throughout the middle east, an area of vital intrest to the US.

And there is a military soultion to that.

Would have been damn nice to actually have that as a justification for Iraq, now wouldn't it?

We got Terror and WMD Threat.

To be fair, it was either CNN or FOX that ran this on their bottom screen scroller:

"The Regime is the weapon of mass destruction"

At that time, we did get a few stories alluding to your post, but they were not a focus. Understandable, given we were on the terror / treat kick at that time.

There are also diplomatic / economic solutions to that as well.

I'm completely sure authorization to invade would not have been granted, given a war for oil and the ongoing protection of the petrodollar.
