On the other side there is mentioned in one of the posts about Mark Lindsey's new restaurant and on this side there is the Best Pizza and the Worst Pizza threads.

It gave me an idea. Let’s start a "What's Your Favorite Restaurant?" thread.

No debate about whether it's good or bad, simply your favorite restaurant. It would be cool to throw in your favorite dish there too.

OK here goes.

For me it's a toss up;

Jakes Famous Crawfish, 401 SW 12th Ave, Portland.
My favorite dish is the seared Ahi Tuna with wasabi and soy sauce. Manila clam steamers are a great appetizer.

Mama Mia Trattoria, 439 SW 2nd Ave. Portland.
My favorite dish is Grandma Mary's Sunday Gravy.
It's the closest spaghetti that I've ever had to my grandmothers!

Next!

Corbett Fish House.

On Corbett Street near John's Landing.

http://corbettfishhouse.com/

Relaxed atmosphere.
Great tasting fried fish that's actually healthy-[Yes, you read that right].
Draught beer.
Nice prices.
Try the jalapeno tartar sauce.

Once you visit there, you'll be thanking Ol' Herb.
They also have a new location on Hawthorne around SE 41st.
Yum!

I love good SEAFOOD restraunts.........see food eat it!!!!MMMMM

Actually I love a good filet at Saylors Country Kitchen. Start it off with a Jack and Coke and a plate of their delicious onion rings. Scrape the garlic from the bottom of the butter bowl and spread it all over the bread but save a little to put on the steak as well. Then the steak with a loaded baker! Can't beat it and the waitresses are not snooty like they are at the Ringside. Better food and cheaper also!

Ever notice that the servers at the Saylors Old Country Kitchen are all female??? Not that I'm complaining about having a woman as a server, BUT, I think its a bit odd that they don't have male servers.
If you don't believe me, next time you go to an old Country kitchen look around and you will notice no male servers. I used to go to the Old Country Kitchen in Beaverton on the West side and the only dudes I saw were the bus boys. Ive always contemplated about going down to the Old Country kitchen and applying for a waiter position, to see what happends. Although they have tasty food, im still a little puzzeld by their discriminatory practices that take place. Again Im referring mostly to the now Defunct "saylors old Country kitchen in Beaverton, But I bet the other one is the same way! It was actually very nice having the abundance of estrogen in the air, but Im still weirded out by the whole "no Male" waiters thing.

Just to have dinner somewhere else: Chaba Thai (NE 58th & Sandy) Best Thai in PDX IMNSHO.

Takahashi on Holgate, with somebody who has the 50% VIP card

Fairly special occasions: McCormick & Schmicks downtown (and Jakes, too, but that's also good for no-special-reason happy hour in the bar)

Special occasion: Higgins

Last time at Saylors: there was a huge Gypsy, excuse me, Romany party there, it was crazy! The waitresses were exasperated and frazzled.

Copernicus, I'll go to La Carreta with you anytime, I need a LaCazuela, some chili con queso, and a chili verde burrito in a bad way!

Not true....you want a job there feel free to wash the dishes man. Go to Billygan's Roadhouse sometime in salmon creek.....all female waitresses there as well.....dudes bussing the tables and cooking the grub. I have no problem with that. It is after all a priveately owned business and if the owner wants all female waitresses then more power to them. I think there have been studies done and at average restraunts people typically order more from female waitresses than from dudes. If you want a job there then put on a dress timberfake! LOL

Yeah Sinju is pretty darned good. I get the feeling that it would be appreciated by some out-of-town sushi snobs too.

Jakes will always be a good default restaurant for me. It's a good Portland experience restaurant.

I've never had a bad meal at El Gaucho.

Fenouil teated me good.

Clarklewis was good.

The Silver Grille in Silverton was good.

I want to try Colossos - I went to school with Julie - Tapas. Heard GREAT things about that place.

But yeah, if I had to quick-pick one, Jakes.

From their website:

Classic Sophistication
Our urban brasserie combines the best of classic French cuisine with the inventive use of flavors and ingredients from nearby European countries. Magic eye, you just never know about that ChickenJuggler! Hopefully they only have (perky) female waitresses and it wasn't from the "wood-fired duck breast with armagnac soaked prunes"! (and yum, I love duck teats!)

I keep thinking of the "Seinfeld" where Elaine complains to the EEO about the busty waitresses at Monk's, and how she tried to get a job and couldn't; the guys immediately grab their coats to hurry down there to investigate!

And Copernicus, we have to meet & eat! I'll bring former PDXradio poster Princess Gandrina Pancho Sanchez aka Hoofy McSnooSnoo, who has the 50%-off VIP card.

I hate to admit I've had several really good steaks at Outback, and I love that "Wallaby Darned" foo-foo frozen drink!

Adding the 1/2 lb of crab legs to the strip steak is my favorite at Outback.

They are consistent too. I've eaten at Outbacks in WA, NV, CO, CA, MT and UT. They are all just about the same, which is good.

Every one of them undercooks (and they wait staff will tell you to order one up from where you normally would) so to get my medium rare, I need to order medium!

Mmmmmm!

I hate chain restaurants. We live in a land that is rich and filled full of locally owned restaurants...why should we go out of our way to go to a chain?

Although, if I must...Red Robin is a good place to settle for...they have stuff that my family will eat (I'm vegetarian and fairly picky...but will live with a garden burger)

Mrs. M- don't their pickles taste warm to you??? I have a thing about warm pickles. Never had this thing before...but it surfaced itself recently. Oh! Oh! And we will totally have to go eat. I'm slowly amassing an entire clan of Takahashi feasters.

OK, as a Salem Keizer resident I don't get the oppurtunity to get up to the Portland area much for dining out excursions but if I had to choose some places up north here are my 3 choices of places that I have tried.

In Tigard, Rodney's for the Rueben Sandwich (its huge and it is done right)

In Beaverton, Pho Van hands down some of the best asian cuisine I have ever had

Third, Gustav's

I really miss Macheezmo Mouse as that was some damned good food. Are there anymore left?

In the Salem-Keizer area one restaurant stands out far above all the rest and that is Caruso's in Keizer. Gerry's polenta, veal dishes, and desserts are simply Awesome.

Darktemper, Yep. Big yellow X's on the ends of the runways.

It's a bummer. I enjoyed seeing the planes there and the airs shows or as they called it a Fly-In, were cool with all the vintage aircraft.

From what I understand, the city wanted them gone and raised the assessment to something like $44 million, which is probably what it's really worth in today’s dollars, but they didn't generate enough revenue to pay those kind of taxes.

When the old guy that owned it died a few years back his kids took it over.

I read in the Columbian a few weeks back that they are going to develop it and there will be shopping, hotels, etc on the property.

Dang! Another great Vancouver landmark bites the dust! Been in Vancouver for 37 years and lived in cascade park when there were no houses south of McGillvery. Went to many of those Fly in's....they were great. Sad to see it go....was just by there this AM...dont get over that way very often and did see that it looked in disrepair.

Do the people back by the high school still have there little private strip or did the city make them close that as well?

Best food I ever ate! Has a secret recipe for the BBQ ribs that is simply to die for! And the Chocolate cake with the homemade white frosting is simply sinful! Simply the BEST EVER!

Big Daddy's BBQ is good(and they opened one near my house, in the old Pietros on N. Lombard&Penninsular), but Clay's Smokehouse on Division is where its at(droooool).

Busters? Blech. I guess this is the "dry" vs. "wet" argument, in my world BBQ should have sauce on it.

Merkin......Gotta ask you......do you pour sugar over your frosted flakes also?

Why do you think they are called YUGO's. Cause you are always calling the neighbor and saying "YUGO to store for me. I need frosted flakes, milk, bananna's, and a 5-lb bag of sugar!

We never got pre-sugared cereal, so we had to add our own 27 teaspoons of sugar while 'rents were reading the paper.

Love the 'nanners, but had to stop, bumped my blood sugar too high in the AM, dammit. (Like the cookie dough is ever OK? LOL)

We didn't get Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs, or even Sugar Smacks or Kellogg's Puffa-Puffa Rice, but we always had Tang!?!

("...it's what the astronauts drink").

Pure sugar!

I'm hungry, so I could probably rattle off places all day, but here's a few to chew on.

If you haven't heard of Javier's on Lombard, put it on your overnight list. For odd hours, you really could do much worse. It is authentic and you can get lost in the menu without a grasp of Espanol, but the staff is good natured 24 hours a day. Sometimes it is not a good place to dilly-dally, so they get your order to you pretty quick.

To start a long day, the ultimate in chicken fried steak indulgence has to be the Overlook just off of Interstate. If you don't read the fine print and innocently order from the main breakfast menu, you will be in for a surprise. Under that gravy is two, yes, two breaded tickets to the ER. Unless you are gonna burn it off, I'd cheat and order the single -- still a monster -- from the senior menu.

Speaking of deep fried planks, the Sweet Home on Sandy has a monstrous chicken-fried steak sandwich. After my first one, I christened it, "the meat barge." Always good, but never prepared the same way twice in the dozen times I have been there for lunch in the last three years. It is in a sketchy little area full of characters, but the huge menu and proximity to 1-205 make it a good spot.

Eddie's Pizza on Killingsworth makes gargantuan pies, sandwiches and calzones. They are nice folks with a real oven, fresh ingredients and great recipes. If that wasn't enough, they have ice cream too. You can pick it up or have it delivered to most of North and Northeast Portland.

Top O' Hill on 99 in Canby has the greatest sweet potato fries on the planet, generous portions of all-American fare and a good staff. They get bonus points for having plenty of dead animals staring at you while you eat.

There's a lengthy list I am sure we all have of unique places that have gone away. Mebbe it is in already in a thread I haven't discovered. I could weep thinking of ordering a "double slaw" with my burger out at Waddle's. Now, that was a restaurant.

Other casualties of our fair city include not only the original Rose's restaurants, but Rose's Ice Cream on Fremont. I remember that they boasted such a high percentage of fat that you had to skip lunch just to have room for one of their shakes.

Sandwich King on Sandy was once a place where the KBPS staff could be found munching and hanging out.

Organ Grinder, Grizzly Bear Pizza, Circus Burger, Farrell's, Seaton's Pharmacy, Peppino's Tacos, La Casa De Rios, Kupie Kone and so many others. Now, I'm wistful and hungry. I'm sure glad that Yaw's is coming back.

On the Evergreen Airpark tangent, I am also really sad to see it go. When I was a kid, Wally would always take the time to at least poke fun at me. He was a legend. Who else could borrow a radiator for his Jenny from the Smithsonian?

He probably taught more folks to think and fly than any other instructor in the region. Sure, his birds were scary, but I think in a way, that was the point. He was old school and that meant being able to fly a brick before you got that million dollar Mooney.

When I was old enough, I joined the Civil Air Patrol just to get a chance to be around all those planes every summer. I remember year after year, we would walk the runway late at night and look up at all the stars. I also noticed that each year a few more wealthy types bought homes next to the field so they could step outside and preen their shiny feathers. Soon, wave after wave of new houses were built in the area.

It is sad that the airport brought in money and slit it's own neck in the process. Frankly, I would not be surprised to see Union Station close someday for many of the same reasons. When the carpetbaggers in the new McCondos start to chirp about diesel smoke, whistles and bells, it will only be a matter of time before the 4449 rolls past for the last time.

Still, I love my hometown.

Littlesongs~

When is Yaw's scheduled to open, specifically? As I am in my early 20s, this kind of concept (the retro/nostalgic thing) I would seem to be right at home........

Side query:
Eons ago, at the corner of 4th Plain and 500, there was a restaurant called Yaw's, that was kind of like Shari's if I remember right. (The building has been the "Fa Fa Gourmet" for prolly the last 17 years or so.) Was that one connected with the original Yaw's in Portland somehow, or what?

What's even funnier is how I just seemingly started thinking about it out of the blue a few weeks ago after probably a 15+ year hiatus...........

So Mark isn't calling it Yaw's then? Whatup wit dat?

Now if he *really* wants to make an impact on the radio and the restaurant he'd be doing his show that day on 910, making it more traditional yet! (Which I'd be all for, believe me!) Seems kind of anachronistic doing it on a modern FM station.........

Still you could likely expect me and my fellow hepcats from high school to be hangin' there quite a bit, so long as they don't mark the prices up exorbitantly..........

Darktemper~
Thanks--that's what I was thinking. Seemed like the concepts just didn't seem to "jive" with each other..........

Start off the day with breakfast at the original Roses. Have an original Yaws burger for lunch. Then stop at Engine House Pizza for dinner. And finally Ferrels ice cream parlor and a monster sundae for dessert!

Ahhhh the perfect day.
Yummmmm

Best Breakfast in the NW IMHO is Original Pancake House. Spendy yes, but for the quality and quantity it cannot be beat. Salem has an Elmer's I can't remember ever eating their but I know I have as a child years back so I guess its time to give it another try.

If you haven't been to Beaterville on Killingsworth for breakfast -- and you love automobiles -- you gotta go! Be sure to grab some Cars, Gary Numan and Ides of March 8-tracks for the food coma on your drive home.

In Hazel Dell, the Steakburger fills you up with the meat and potatoes classics and the Golf-O-Rama helps you burn them off. One of the last great old school places around.

...........and at the Steakburger, you can get all you can eat pancakes and a "Damn Good Cuppa Joe" for about $3.00.

Afterward go across the street to Action Motor Sports where with any luck you can probably get a sighting of ol' Motozak drooling over the latest KTMs!

(Sorry about the Cuppa Joe bit.....for some reason or other that part of town has always reminded me of Twin Peaks....don't know why.........)

OPH is by far the best *chain* breakfast in town (although going to the original 40's-era location may not really qualify as going to a "chain"). However I hear that some of the other branches of the chain(like the one in Seattle) don't live up to the original Original's high standards.

But Elmer's ain't bad. Not like Sharis...

2 great standouts on the OPH menu are the Apple Pancake yum! Better be ready for the wait though as they are made from scratch and usually take upwards of 30 minutes from ordering to delivery to your table.

And you cannot go wrong with their Ham and Cheese Omelette which is ginormous.

And don't forget the fresh squeezed OJ which is special as it isn't everyday that most people get fresh squeezed juices.
