... he is a Democrat I would SERIOUSLY consider. He has experience serving in the Clinton cabinet, and has done a very impressive job in New Mexico of thinking outside the box and balancing the budget and being fiscally smart WITHOUT jacking up taxes in one of the poorest states in the US. I don't know how electable he is however ... Discuss.

Nice guy, plenty of common sense. Probably not dynamic enough to withstand a campaign and get elected.

I agree with you, Deane. Solid performer, the kind of guy you want in government. May be tough for him to attract much attention with peacocks like Obama, Hillary and Edwards strutting around.

Isn't it about time we had more steak and less sizzle though? Hillary certainly, and Edwards and Obama to a lesser point, are IMO the style. Bill Richardson is the SUBSTANCE. I'll take that.

>>>"Isn't it about time we had more steak and less sizzle though?" Correct, but will never happen. The American voter is pretty shallow when it comes to deciding who to vote for. A pretty face on TV gets a lot of votes.

I have now been in NM for the past few years. I actually hate to admit it but I like Richardson quite a bit. Even Rush has admitted it before. If there was ever a Dem I would vote for, it would be him.

Well, you never know - Richardson could have half a chance. 2008 could be an odd year for primaries. It's been a long time since we had a serious primary race in either party. Hillary, Obama, and others could wind up splitting the delegates, and for the first time in ages they could go into the Democratic convention without a clear nominee. In that case, Richardson could sneak in. Here's one way: follow the example of Abraham Lincoln, who in 1860 was no one's first choice for the Republican nomination. Shrewdly, he or his people lined quietly up support among the party faithful as being everyone's SECOND choice. If your guy doesn't make it, then support Lincoln. The leading contenders for the nomination were unacceptable to the others' supporters, so after a deadlock, they compromised on their second choice. Way too soon to say what will happen in 2008 but Richardson, well respected and experienced, could sneak in in this way. Would be interesting to see Richardson and McCain, two Southwesterners, go at it in the general. Andrew
