The famous video of the Foster-area bumper car accidents has not only been viewed on-line more than almost any vid in history, but made it to the Jay monologue tonight (Wed. 1/17) at apprx. 11:43 pacific. This vid will, if not already, become a "classic".

For those who don't venture over to "Politics & Other Things," the now infamous video is still posted at KING5.com with the original sound, as recorded by an amateur with a camcorder.

It just got everyone by surprise Beavis. We dont have enough bad weather to drive around with studs on all the time.

What you don't see on the video tape was that earlier that guy with the cam corder hosed the street down with water. Then went upstairs to record it!

Not Really. Just Kidding (At least as far as I know!)

We had a downhill driveway into the garage when I was younger. On a snow day I thought it would be cool to hose it down and slide down it into the garage....it was. Although Dad did not think it to funny when he sledded the car into the garage. Only thing that saved my butt was that he did not crash it! It was stuck there though until the thaw the next day!

when i lived in portland, most the cars had studs on from the first leaf fall to half way through summer, so irritating, the sound killed my ears.

years of minnesota winters and 2 oregon winters with bald tires have shaped me into the amazing driver i am today, so i like to talk shit :P

There are a lot less now. Most people go for the non-studded "snow tires" with the slits cut into them.

We have two (somewhat crappy) cars. One that does not see a lot of miles gets the studs, the other just gets reasonable tires. If things get really bad (and this storm was not quite that bad), we use the studded one full time; otherwise, it's just for short trips.

The problem with Oregon is there is almost no reason to have chains. Here, people panic and just tear up the road with chains when they could just very easily drive a bit slower and have almost no worries.

The studs are annoying, but really are effective when the time is right. So, we split the middle and try not to abuse the roads too much.

My kids are old enough to start learning about driving. When we have great snow, I take them to the industrial areas and show them the ropes. It's great fun, and they get to know what to do. Hopefully they won't be the star of a great video like this.

Good grief, people can be really stupid!

From the short time here, unless your going to the mountains you really just need tires that can handle rain.....

Traction tires that have the mountain symbol on the outside of the sidewall and also having those same tires siped (horizontal slashes in the treads) make them darn near as good as studs. Regular freeway non-traction tires or wannabe traction tires....those without the symbol....are sometimes not even good in heavy rain. If you hydroplane through water what do you think will happen on ice and snow?
For larger vehicles there is no substitute for Cam-Lock style chains. You can get these babies good and tight without the need for bungee straps to keep them from flapping. The cams are so easy to use and make them so snug I can go about 40 with them on without any issues. I usually only go about 30 though cause if one should break they can do damage in a hurry. Next time you get tires check for traction tires and asked to have them siped...well worth it. Also recommend America's Tire Company and get the unconditional warranty......has saved me many times and the relatively low prices makes it a great value in the long run.

"From the short time here, unless your going to the mountains you really just need tires that can handle rain....."
For those who have only been here a short time (less than 5 years), you may think this was abnormal weather. Well it has been for the last 5 or so years but as average winters used to be not that long ago, this was just another typical storm. Snow in PDX is normal. This wasn't that bad, as MissingKSKD mentioned.
The drive on Tuesday morning was bad because people were not prepared and did not have proper tires. Good tread all weather tires are a minimum need to get through most weather. People with low tread or no tread or fancy tires get out on the road and cause problems. Driving on fresh snow is no problem. But, we have hills and slopes. People who don't know how to drive in this stuff and/or have improper tires cause problems. Studs give more grip than just siped tires under most conditions. But, when you have bare pavement for a month or more, you are going to grind those things down.

Chains are best but are needed mostly in extreme conditions. I remember years ago I had a small car with rear wheel drive with studded tires. Decent shaped ones. I used that car to go up the mountain to go skiing. I also carried chains. There were a few significant snowfalls up on the mountain and the studs didn't work. I had to put chains on over them to get traction. I removed them when I got down and conditions improved. Then I got a front wheel drive car. Haven't needed chains since, even going up the mountains. Studded tires do just fine.

I followed someone with chains a couple days ago and they got on I-84 at 181st going east bound. He had chains on the rear tires. The freeway was bare pavement. He got up to 60 mph. I was behind him and mentioned to my wife that the person obviously didn't know what he was doing. Sure enough, he had only gone about 1/4 mile and started slowing down and pulling over to the side of the road. As I went by him, I heard the proverbial broken chain BANG-BANG-BANG.......

Some people have no sense. Good thing he didn't have rap music with a big sound system or he would have thought it was just the music.

No, I had no trouble this storm either.
