Its apparent the public would rather look at hot bimbo's than real news/weather reporters. It's quite sad, take Katie Couric for example, except for the fact that she is not hot, Just a bimbo!

Q: "Whatever happened to the geek weather guy with the white shirt and pocket protector that you knew spent his life glued to a computer screen and looking at weather models.....now we have models doing weather!" A: It's Matt Zaffino...He's no hottie like that Rob Marciano (yum)...but he's a big deadhead, so I love him.

"Whatever happened to the geek weather guy" I'm thinking Jim Little was the epitome of geek weather guys. I don't think any model weather girl is ever going to top his accomplishment of managing to be the top weather person at three PDX stations. ps: I liked Rob, but he was more of a jock weather guy!

In my 10 years at KATU I got to work with Bosley, Apple, Little, Zaffino, Pederson. Each one quite a character. Bos was a gentleman. Dave Apple was a comedian, Jim Little was always tinkering with the weather computers until he got himself in trouble and then disavowed any knowledge of his actions after calling us in maintenance for help, Matt fancied himself a scientist, and Ron was just happy to be in the Portland market. But it is 13 years since I was there. News, weather, dj's .... once they get a job in Portland, they often decide that they like it here more than they thought so they move around station to station hoping they won't really get that "big offer" and have to move though they'd never admit that openly. Jeff Gianola came here as a weather guy from San Diego. News and weather blondes is not a new concept. It started happening in the 70's. Don Henley wrote about it in his song Dirty Laundry in the 80's: We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who Comes on at five She can tell you bout the plane crash with a gleam In her eye Its interesting when people die- Give us dirty laundry What we really need is more cleavage. After all, what they care about is ratings. So what the heck.

The early 70's was when women started to break into anchor positions. There were some "weather girls" (as they were called) in the 60's. Anchors like Jessica Savitch (Houston, Philly), and Jean Enerson (KING Seattle) were among the pioneers. When did Robin Chapman start anchoring in Portland, and was she the first female anchor in PDX?

And, yes, to stay with topic of the thread...all three women mentioned above are/were blonde. None of them bubble-headed though!

Oh, for the good old days of Bob Lynott, Jack Capell and Fred Jenkins. Not real pretty to look at, but real meteorologists who knew how to forecast. In fact, Lynott authored a book years ago whose title says it all: "The Weather Tomorrow: Why Can't They Get It Right?"

Remember the blonde Weather Girl on KPTV in the early 70's? She not only did the weather but also modeled clothes for the weather sponsor.

Kelly Day makes me think of "Dirty Laundry" every time I watch her, she ALWAYS has "a gleam in her eye" and a smile when she reads the most horrific news. It's un-nerving, I tell you. Does anyone remember a "Miss Vickie" doing TV weather in the 70's? Somewbody showed up with her as their date at one of my parent's parties...she was va-va-voom with spatulas of eye makeup, I couldn't take my eyes off of her, and neither could every male in the room, (and probably the females as well). I always thought the Boz was arrogant & stuck up; one of his daughter's was my BFF and partner-in-crime for years, she has not turned out well at age 47. Sad. All my best adventures in my 20's involve her and are not repeat-able here, they're too embarrassing (and somewhat illegal).

"I always thought the Boz was arrogant & stuck up;" I've known Jim Bosley for over thirty years, and have always thought the world of him. When my father was in the hospital following heart surgery, I told Boz how depressed he was. Next thing I knew, my mom called to tell me that while she was visiting dad, Boz stopped by to cheer-up and encourage my dad, a man he'd never met. What a nice thing to do.

I wonder if we could get Gary Hill to weigh in on what it was like working with Trish 'the Dish.' While he's at it, he could also discuss Kim Singer, whom I believe once co-owned a Newport, Oregon area Radio station with her ex-husband. Herb

Hey Andy....you remember a short time ago when Daria was doing weather spots on WB32? I think they experimented with it but wives got tired of their husbands sitting there with the deer in the headlights stare when she went on!! LOL

Look at KOIN with their weekend and sometimes morning girl. She isn't that cute, and she is just dumb. I agree, when there is an appeal to beauty, I'll take it. At least Daria had an idea though of what the city names were and didn't have to explain to me what snow means like I am a 3 year old. Go Lynn Huston, the RoboCop of news!

Daria missed a great opportunity in my opinion, to move on to an affiliated station as a "weather girl". If she would project 1/2 of her radio personality as a weather person, she'd be in a major market by now. After all, she's not unpleasant to view, right?

Wow, Craig. You are the man. I recall hearing Al Caruso doing the news, I believe, at KWJJ years ago. I didn't realize he had a gig at the beach at one time. Herb

The Weather Rock is the perfect weather indicator, it never fails. It is more accurate than your local weather person. This rock is the living word and is 100% correct. This is how it works: A dry rock means fair weather. A wet rock means it's raining. A dusty rock means a dust storm. A swaying rock means it's windy. A shadow under the rock means it's sunny. A white rock means it's snowing. If the rock is jumping up and down, an earthquake is upon us. If the bottom of the rock is under water it's a flood. Most beautiful of all, though the rock is not attached to its' existence, it doesn't mind which of the above is happening.

Nope....pretty pleasant to look at and think you are right that she missed a great opportunity there. Instead of just a weather update imagine what she could have done as the official news woman or even with a daytime talk show! Great article about her: http://www.bizjournals.com/portland/stories/2000/12/04/daily1.html
