Huh, neat. Direct-TV broadcasts in a non-standard (proprietary) broadcast system, D.S.S. From what I understand, DSS software is not compatible with standard MPEG2 DVB-S (Digital Video Broadcast-Satellite.) So, the burning $10,000,000,000 question is: can the OS or the BIOS/Firmware be re-flashed or replaced with a decoder that DOES receive DVB broadcasts free to air, like Muzak or a lot of the programming on the various Intelsats, Echostars and Galaxies? (You can even get the CW free to air on Galaxy 11 Tp. 1, but it's on C-band!) Missing KSKD? Any ideas?

"So, the burning $10,000,000,000 question is: can the OS or the BIOS/Firmware be re-flashed or replaced with a decoder that DOES receive DVB broadcasts free to air" There is always a hacker who will try it. This is like hacking a set top box ... illegal and getting harder in the day of 128 bit encryption. Of course, you could lay out the dough for one and tear into it. Let us know how it goes.

Whatever DTV broadcasts, it must be easily translatable to MPEG because my Tivo does it.
