An embarrassing moment for a TV sports anchor in Wichita, Kansas. He got a two day suspension. From Youtube:

A good practice to get into (at least for radio): don't take your cans off until the mic is off. This has saved my butt numerous times.

When I was in Houston I would go and turn my mic off personally when running a news story.

What are the currant "Words" that you can't say on radio & TV ? I know the "F" word is a no no. It seems like radio stations are sanitizing songs with the word Sh*t in them also. Are websites that broadcast music & talk held to the same FCC rules?

just curious.

There is no list of words anymore... it's all about context.

You can use the "bad" words in an expletive context, but not to describe the actual excretory or reproductive function.

For example, you can say "oh sh*t", but you can't say "I stepped in sh*t". You can say "he's an f-ing jerk", but you can't use the f-word to refer to having sex.

South Park has an excellent episode mocking these rules.

A few years before the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfuntion" KPIG, Freedom, CA had a show on Saturday nights after 10:00pm called Unkle (misspelled on purpose) Sherman's Dirty Boogie. There was no censorship whatsoever. I even heard an intact extended version of the infamous "The Rodeo Song" by Gary Lee and Showdown!

In the late 90's during the CARB II gas fiasco in California I remember listening to Dr. Bill Wattenberg on KGO one night and a caller wasn't bleeped when he said, "...and it's because of this sh*t gasoline." Another talkshow host on KGO routinely used the word a**hole, as did Phil Hendrie up until sometime around 2003.
