Some good concerts on DVD I have purchased. Van Halen “Live Without A Net” from the 5150 album. Not spectacular but brings back good memories! Van Halen “Live: Right Here, Right Now” from the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album. Not spectacular but brings back good memories! Pink Floyd “Pulse” AWESOME DVD CONCERT. WHAT MORE CAN YOU SAY! I am really suprised by the lack of a good selection of eighties rock concerts. Seems that they were always taping them even back then but were are they? Anyone else have some concerts on DVD that are worth purchasing…what are they?

Jethro Tull LIving With The Past Led Zeppelin Rush In Rio These three really really shine in every department. Of course, it helps to like the band, but even if you don't some of the cuts are so awesome they outshine the original tracks that made you a fan. I also like Concert For George, Peter Gabriel's Secret World Live and Peter Gabriel's Growing Up. There are many more out there. The problem with "80's" is that there just wasn't as many talented bands doing truly great concerts ... and survived until the technology became available to make concert DVD's. Zeppelin's early film tanked, but their DVD won awards and used every frame they could come up with spanning the whole career and half a dozen big shows. Tull's 30+ years performing translates into a totally awesome DVD covering two concerts five or so years ago. And Rush In Rio ... another band that survived because they were good even though their early videos were lacking, this concert show video with extras ... I couldn't help but sit there and let it play end to end (well almost, anyway).

I own two: Rush in Rio (they do a great job of filling in videos and other fun stuff, it isn't JUST music) and AC/DC - Live at Donnington. Angus goes absolutely berserk in that one, I have seen AC/DC live four times and am amazed at his energy, but this one is over the top.

Have not seen that one but yes it is sad but true that Roger Waters is not on it. Even without Waters it is a most impressive concert production. Well worth it for a Pink Floyd Fan! May have to try and get a copy of Live at Pompeii myself!

The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" DVD. Not a lot of excitement, just a bunch of guys sitting around making great music! It's not very often that I like a remake of a song, even if it's by the original artists, but I like the acoustic version of Hotel California as much as or maybe even better than the original!

I've been on a HUGE Netflix/copying binge of concerts of late. Here's a few that nailed me: Yes, as noted above - AC/DC at Donnington is amazing. Brian's vocals aren't perfect. But the crowd is one of the best I have ever seen. The stage is great and the production value is stellar. U2 - Zoo TV. Just released on DVD after ten years of it only being available on VHS. It is everything they wanted it to be and spared NO expense. The opening 10 minutes alone made my jaw drop. I have stolen many ideas from that show and I keep them in a lockbox. ( Honorable mention for Rattle and Hum. Bono gets his Jesus freak on - and deservedly got teased about it - but come on, it was the Joshua Tree tour and there are a few performances in the movie that are not on the CD of the same name ). Queen - Wembley. Again, it's the crowd that steals the show ( and doing that from Freddie is no easy task ). It was also a tour on the heels of the Live Aid performance that had given them renewed vigor. ( Honorable mention to Queen - On Fire at the Bowl. Remastered and sounding perfect. Freddie's voice peaked from about 1978 - 1982. They are in top form here in this 1982 show ). Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert is fantastic too. Extreme, of all bands, steal the show with a 16 minute medley. Green Day - Bullet in a Bible. Rockin'. Depeche Mode - 101. Unless there is a newer version that has been released, the quality of this show is sub par. However, seeing this " little-at-the-time-to-everyone-ELSE " band play The Rose Bowl is pretty cool. Crowded House - Farewell to the World. Final show played before a hometown-ish crowd. Brutal. Bowie - Serious Moonlight. I LOVE the opening and how Bowie sings half the first song with his back to the audience and turns around and the crowd goes apeshit. Rush - Rio. Probably the best SOUNDING show I have ever watched on DVD. I mean that band nailed every note. Others in my Netflix Queue - Cheap Trick, Tool ( Although I hear it's kinda shitty ), Pink Floyd/Roger Waters stuff, Ween, Zep, Primus/Les Claypool, Steely Dan ( eh - really just for posterity ), Violent Femmes, Pixies, I've seen all the Metallica stuff - just want to re-copy it to have on the the background for parties ( Although Heavy Metal Parking Lot is something I have on an OLD bootleg VHS. Same for Metallica Drummer. Anyone know what that is? Pretty neat to have in my collection ) - NIN, Spinal Tap. Tons more. Those are the ones that I dig the most though.
