Yes that's Deane alright! He has an extensive radio background including working for Don Burdon at KOIL. Just one of the reasons why we learned so much at KCYX. He brought a lot to the table.

Tis I. Unfortunately, that picture is over 30 years old. I wish it were current.

If anyone is interested in audio and photos from the 60's era, I have posted a number of things I had collected from that era on my web site. Included are Don Rose, Chuck Dann who is now a Hollywood voice over talent (aka Chuck Riley), and Rob Sherwood who was at one time PD of K101 in SF. Also, Don Bleu, now a prominent San Fransisco talent. All of these people worked for me at one time or another.

I agree with Craig that Deane brought a lot of experience KCYX. I was but a 26 year old at the time and regret not taking more advantage of Deane's expertise. My short 8 months at the station I count as one of my favorite stops in my broadcasting career.

Don't miss the the "Photo Galleries". Station studio pictures from Deane's link above. They're under "Radio". Each picture represents a station, so when you click on a picture, you get an entire set to look through and they're in color. Wonderful Stuff! Here's just one:

Paul Oscar Anderson behind the mike in 1962 at Star Station KOIL. He would later work for KISN & KGAR.

"Deane,
Where are you headquartered at these days?"

I'm not sure I'd call it being headquartered. More like where are you lounging around these days?

I live in Omaha.

Here's a direct link to the photo galleries:

The audio site and the photo galleries are actually two different sites, just so there isn't any confusion.

Great pictures. All that old equipment. Looks like KOMA was an RCA house. All those 76B consoles. The newsroom board was the same as the original one at the KISN corner at 10th and Burnside.

Been years since I've seen any pictures of those things.

Is Steve Brown still doing a talk show in Omaha?

>>>"Is Steve Brown still doing a talk show in Omaha?"

Steve did a daily talk show in Omaha for a number of years. A year or so ago, he cut back and did weekends only. The first of this year, he dropped that and is pursuing some new venture. I have lunch with Steve every few months, but I haven't talked with him currently to find out what's up.

I loved the pictures linked above! However, I noticed that in virtually all of the pictures, there is an ashtray and a pack of cigarettes next to the board!? One even has a cup of coffee next to the turntables! I guess that I'm too much of a young pup because the only studio world that I have personally known had Draconian "no food, drinks, or smoking" policies.

Soda pop can render control boards useless. Cigarettes can render your lungs useless. But most GM's cared more about the former.

In the 60's, there were no restriction anywhere. I didn't smoke and used to hate having to blow all of the ashes out of the way, mop up the coffee and pop spills, etc., when beginning my shift.

I know first hand about the pop stuff. I dumped a Dr Pepper into a recording cart deck, killing it on the spot. The engineer was surprisingly understanding and I kept my job with only a "Be careful" from management.

While at KCYX I did knock my favorite coffee cup off the studio desktop while on the air doing my mid-day shift. Thankfully no coffee was in the cup. I told my sad story on the air to the listeners who may have had the same demise of their favorite coffee mug. I not only gotta few phone calls but a local merchant dropped off a new coffee cup later that day.

Chris, wasn't it fun to get the kind of personal reaction to things one did in that size market.

I remember when we had Steven's collie dog he called Lassie (it was a male). Lassie got lose one day and we immediately announced same on the air and asked for help. The phone rang like crazy. Lassie just went past my house. I just saw (her) over by Cascade Steel, etc. Needless to say, we got Lassie back quickly, but covered in dirt and muck. I have a photo of him getting a bath on the driveway.

If we made one major mistake at KCYX, I think it was that we were too slick and should have done more of the physical involvement thing. We certainly did a bunch with Brad Eaton's talk show, but we could have done a lot of other things. More "reach out and touch someone" and have them touch us back.

There was one morning when the coffee machine either broke or became groundless (you remember the ten-cent coffee machine?). We made a small aside about it, and about five minutes later, a listener on the way to work brought by some hot coffee and some pastries. She said she was heading for the coffee shop anyway, refused payment and went on her way. And Deane, I remember when Lassie got loose. That was wild!

Deane is far too kind... The truth of the matter is that I was 'asked to move along' (and rightly so) after trying to blend being both a morning radio guy and a practicing alcoholic!

I remember the last time Deane & I spoke on the phone was a 3-way conversation with the Ore Dept of Labor, when I was trying to collect unemployment! Silly fellow, me.

In retrospect, it all worked out for the best. I found a good career as a 9-1-1 dispatcher and I'm (gratefully) out of the essentially dead business of broadcasting.

Deane's contributions to the industry now stand out in both scope and depth... If only had I realized it at the time!

Mike, I had forgotten all of that. Still don't recall the circumstances. Kathie and I were talking just the other day and neither of us could remember why you left. And I certainly don't remember the conversation with the Ore Dept of Labor.

I guess in the end, it turned out to be best for you given your success in SF.
