Yes, I know this is an odd post. I was told today I need to get upper dentures. As a thriving radio "personality" (hey, bad personality is still personality) I was wondering of any other high class talent have dentures. I'm afraid it will change the way I speak. You don't have to post ... you can send a response to my e-mail ... but, of course, all the fun and snarky (Lynn S. is a wordsmith extraordinaire) comments can go right here. Phil, I'm waaaaiting.

One of my uncles had dentures and it did change the way he spoke for awhile but he overcame this. Trouble is, it takes time.

I once knew a 17 year old girl who had 2 complete sets of dentures. I never noticed anything different in her speech and would never have known she had them if she hadn't suddenly pulled the entire array out of her mouth! This reminds me of the radio newsman who used to gnaw on a carrot while delivering the news and no one had a clue. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Can you get implants? In your mouth, I meant.

LOL!! I know somebody that had implants in the upper jaw. They ended up with some nasal complications that are tough to deal with. Be careful selecting who and what implant. Also, ask them if you can get a simulation. Something that goes in, but is not made to last and does not require any existing teeth be modified. The part that can affect your speech, lies right behind the teeth. It's the shape of the jaw and that transition between your upper mouth and the teeth that changes things. Maybe it's possible to get something very similar in shape to what will be there with a denture. Then you can practice!

Steve, I had a couple upper bridges put in a couple years ago. I had a little trouble, but as stated above, I had to work to get used to them. It took me about 6 weeks to be totally comfortable. Good Luck with your decision.

Steve, you should probably take some vacation time when you make the "change"..that should give you plenty of time to adjust...my dad sounded funny for a few weeks and then he was fine...good luck

There is an adjustment time, but it should be minimal. I have a complete upper and partial lower. I not only jock with 'em, but do play-by-play as well and have no problems whatsoever. I just hope you have good dental insurance, 'cause dem things is expensive!
