Old wives tales/ urban legends say that deaths of pop culture figures come in 3's. So....

We have James Brown, Gerald Ford, but who is next?

Common sense would say that it possibly could be Saddam Hussien.

Furthermore are there any predictions of famous/ well known/ pop culture figures that will bite the dust in 07?

I will start it out by throwing a couple canidates into the Dead Pool for 2007.

Billy Graham
Natasha Leone
Dick Clark
Roddy Piper
Fidel Castro

In which order?

(I'm serious actually!)

It's supposed to be a morbid thread right?

I don't have anybody on my "hope they tip over soon" list. Maybe Hannity, but that's about as close as it gets. Scratch that, Hannity is not worth it...

Oh, I've got one!

Pat Robertson. It's time for him to go home. Now. I've heard, on solid authority, that God is missing him big time.

Skybill, for what it's worth, I agree with you on who is the greater threat, from your perspective. Morbid indeed! Of course, I'm hoping death and fate have not yet turned an eye toward these two just yet!

I don't wish that on Bush. We need him around as a living icon of these times. I'm completely sure he will continue to capture the mood perfectly for a long time to come.

The powers that be, both upstairs and downstairs are completely pleased with Bush overall though. He's one of God's finest and Satan will even be so bold as to say so. Been quite the story in pergatory, where there is nothing but gossip to pass eternity with. Bush is the stuff right now --good times for all! Nobody, but fate who's not telling for the pure fun of it, knows just what he will do next! She really gets off on that kind of thing, being the complete tease she is.

Pat Robertson is like one of those wierd Stephen King charasters. You know the kind. Full of bizzare powers and influence. The ones that, if they had tipped over early on, would leave nothing to tell later.

When you hit the page, you just KNOW they are part of IT whatever IT is. Goddamm he's good at that! --King, that is. Hope Death has him far down the list, as we've not seen enough just yet! Fate loves the books, so we are covered on that score.

So creepy that death himself gets squemish just thinking about it. This whole thing has been quite the discussion upstairs too. He's been gettin' the word out huge, but what a mess! Pretty ugly overall. Bringing him home is bound to involve a ton of paperwork.

The folks in purgatory want nothing to do with that either! It's busy enough there without having to consume most of eternity trying to process Robertson. They are not even sure it's even possible! They are sure new forms will be required and that means everyone in process gets another one to make it all consistant. And what of those already disposed! The mind boggles at the mere thought! If there is a recall, there will be hell to pay, you can take Satan's word on that! Nothing chaps his ass more than having to give up a soul --NOTHING! His numbers are tough to keep near quota as it is. The only saving grace he's got is sheer mindshare. If it were not for that, hell would be dull and uninspiring, and he so does not want that! It's like being damned in his own kingdom. Not his style.

All in all, the general consensus falls on death to give him some time to tip the scale a bit more, one way or the other, for the greater good.

Of course, this puts death in a rough position. He's gotta work a deal with fate and time to keep the schedule from getting totally outta whack. All that work for a complete nutjob! They should just bite the bullet and get it overwith. Dealing with this is not his job!

Death does not do favors very often, it's just not in character. Dilutes the message and that's not good at all. Nobody respects a death that's not final or at the wrong time --nobody! And it just galls him in that there is nothing worse than passing the buck in his eyes. Death is quick, to the point, otherwise the schedule gets too demanding and that cuts into his downtime. Not cool and makes for a lot more unpleasant deaths as he just can't take the time to do 'em right.

(If anyone has read Pierce Anthony, the humor in that goes to him and a wonderful set of books - "Incarnations of Imortatlity" Highly recommended! One of the only authors I've read that manages to weave a sensible story and make you laugh out loud as you consider tough and often morbid things, in a new light.)

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Richard Jeni, a standup comedian who played to sold-out crowds, was a regular on the "Tonight Show" and appeared in movies, died of a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide, police said Sunday.

Police found the 45-year-old comedian alive but gravely injured in a West Hollywood home when they responded to a call Saturday morning from Jeni's girlfriend, Los Angeles Police Officer Norma Eisenman said.

Eisenman said the caller told police: "My boyfriend shot himself in the face."

Jeni died at a nearby hospital.

Eisenman said suicide had not been officially confirmed and the investigation was continuing.

Jeni regularly toured the country with a standup act and had starred in several HBO comedy specials, most recently "A Big Steaming Pile of Me" during the 2005-06 season.

Another HBO special, "Platypus Man," won a Cable ACE award for best standup comedy special, and formed the basis for his UPN sitcom of the same name, which ran for one season.

Jeni's movie credits included "The Mask," in which he played Jim Carrey's best friend, "The Aristocrats,""National Lampoon's Dad's Week Off," and "An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn."

He had guest appearances in the TV shows "Everybody Hates Chris,""Married: With Children," and updated versions of the game shows "Hollywood Squares" and "Match Game."

The Brooklyn-born comic first received national attention in 1990 with the Showtime special "Richard Jeni: Boy From New York City." Two years later, his "Crazy From the Heat" special attracted the highest ratings in Showtime's history.

Jeni became a frequent guest on "The Tonight Show" during Johnny Carson's reign and continued to appear after Jay Leno took over as host.

He also wrote comic material for the 2005 Academy Awards, which was hosted by his friend Chris Rock

Never had Cable and not available to me yet so could not answer that. WE just had Basic plus Local programming and that was more than enough. Advantage for cable if available in your area is to bundle services for greater savings. Internet, Cable, and VOIP packages can really save money. I would imagine that Cable is just as addictive as Dish but you'd have to compare the programming packages. I think hardwired cable currently has more HDTV if your into that.

Phillykid, We've got DirectTV, had Cable for many years before. Went broadcast only for a while, when money was really tight. When we wanted to pay for TV again, the Dish systems won out on number of channels / dollar.

The biggie was getting a DVR. Now it's not so much of a worry as we don't watch anything live. Spend on that and you won't regret it. IMHO, who ever has the best DVR package is probably the better deal. These things completely change how you consume TV.

One big plus for Cable is you can bundle up Internet, phone, TV, DVR, etc... If you want to snag the whole package, it's a great deal. I don't think the Dish based offerings are as good, but it's been a little while since I last checked.

I predicted her demise on May 15th.

As a result, I'm ahead by 2 in the Morbid Death Pool with everyone else here at zero. Now that I've killed off Les Schwab and Tammy Faye, this is beginning to get a little creepy. I think I'll refrain from making another prediction and spare a life or two.

Yah. I have to admit, thats slightly Fucked up Skeptical. Nothing funny about people dying. Ive never understood why some people get a "boner" off of Morbid Dead pool. While Tammy Faye was an annoying hag, she did leave behind a son, who is now without a mother. Even at 33, a guy still needs his mother!

Beano, the title of this thread is "Morbid Dead Pool". If you've a problem with this, you shouldn't have clicked on it.

In the first post, shyguy focused the topic to "popular culture". As with all people who volunteerly put themsleves in the public spotlight (public figures), they are precieved and treated differently.

Yes, its sad a son is now motherless, but Tammy Faye is part of popular culture and you'll be hearing about her death in a wisecrack way no doubt on Letterman and Leno.

Of course it doesn't make sense, Beano.

I'd be worried about you if you identified with those here who post with glee whilst reveling in the death of others.

The Germans have a word for it: Schadenfreude. Small minds deceive themselves into feel bigger by treating the suffering of others as sport.

You know this is a really messed up thread! To get personal satisfaction out of guessing someones death is really quite pathetic. This is almost as outrageous as Marconi laughing at the beheding of Nick Berg, while playing the audio of his gruesome death. How would YOU feel Skeptical if people were on this board guessing when your son or daughter would be dead????? You would BE OUTRAGED! SO...lets try to get our boners in check and really see how messed up this thread is.

"How would YOU feel Skeptical if people were on this board guessing when your son or daughter would be dead?????"

Beano, you didn't bother to read the first post in this tread. The thread originator limited it to pop culture figures. As I explained before, these people VOLUNTEERLY put themselves in the public sphere and have no rights to privacy.

You're talking about another topic entirely. If you don't like the thread, don't click on it! Its simple as that. Everybody here probably has stayed away from a thread or two because they found the topic distateful.

ps: berg's beheading wouldn't be made a topic of amusement on letterman and leno and likewise wouldn't be made here.

Great.

There's no outrage at making sport on the deaths of others, whilst using a tried and true English term is decried.

Beano, you nailed it. Pathetic is right.

To that I would only add that Dr. Savage is also right. Liberalism is indeed a mental disorder.

Anybody quoting Michael Weiner is the one that's mentally disturbed if you ask me.

You can't make this stuff up.

The proof is in your concern about the use of a legitimate English word and your care-free attitude about gaming the death of others.

Attack others if you wish. Change the subject if you can.

But your sorry defense is lacking and clear for all to see.

Game on.

Nice ad hominem attack Herb. I've yet to make a comment yea or nea regarding this thread, so you have no idea whether I detest or celebrate the morbid death pool, nor do you know whether I'm a liberal or conservative minded person. But, you've managed to work yourself into a lather about how liberals are bad and conservatives are good yet again, which is what people like you need to continually do to justify your beliefs.

Like I said, anyone quoting Michael Weiner certainly has no moral backbone to support themselves with.

Hey, if being a libby is a mental disorder, than so is being conservative and or liberal.

IMHO, this actually has been demonstrated. If one drinks the kool-aid --any kool-aid, there are actual physical changes in the brain that reinforce the dogma. Do it long enough and it's a major deal changing tracks.

---and this is why I post the occasional critical thinking, self exploration / introspection type stuff. Having an awareness of these things is the first step toward becoming a free thinker. (IMHO, a very valuable and American thing to do!)

Wanting to do so, is another matter, but that's not my deal.

I am not offended by the dead pool, but some interesting philosophical have been raised here:

1) Why is it that pop culture celebrities are treated as if they were disposable by almost everyone, except for a core of highly devoted fans? It is almost as if there is no middle ground here: celebrities are either disposable fodder for gossip, or they are the object of extremely intense desire, love, jealousy, etc.

2) When does a person cross this threshold into celebrity?

Great points and questions Alfredo.

"When does a person cross this threshold into celebrity?"

I think it happens the moment that "they the product" become more important than "they the individual" to the greater population.

Some manage to hold on to themselves, and separate the "commerce" from the "person" -- some do not.

This is why a Hip-Hop star can be gunned down, insuring a spike in record sales, and a legacy that cannot be tainted by pictures of them growing old and grey.

Tupac and Notorious BIG -- and in Rock, John Lennon and Kurt Cobain -- have all made exponentially more money dead than alive. The entertainment industry learned a great deal from James Dean. He is still a goldmine, but nobody had to watch him slip away like his equally lauded peer, Marlon Brando.

Is this thread in bad taste? Perhaps. However, no single person here is benefiting from the demise of others. Only mass media can rob the grave with such predictable and long-term benefits to the industry.

(add)

Or, one could go with KSKD's shorter and more concise definition.

I recently read "Prisoner of Trebekistan"
http://www.amazon.com/Prisoner-Trebekistan-Jeopardy-Bob-Harris/dp/0307339564

The little song that they play while Jeopardy contestants are pondering their reply in Final Jeopardy is a lullaby that Merv originally wrote for his infant child.

As of the book's publishing, Merv had earned over $7M on royalties for that song.

I hope not for the sake of her kids.

But for her to disappear from public view and never be heard from again would be great.
