OK, I'll bite. But remember this is a loaded question with many subjective opinions based on what demo you may currently live in... As a "late" baby boomer here are mine: 1. Boston "Boston" 2. Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" 3. Carpenters "1971" 4. Chicago VII 5. Chicago VI I thought I would share because my tastes, as evident from this list, are quite varied! And as a someone who is probably "outta the demo", Coldplay is multi-demographically appealing. While I'm sure they are aiming younger than myself, I am a fan! (Which brings up a whole 'nuther topic...those of us who remember the RFK assasination, Richard Nixon & Watergate, etc., what current rock still resonates with our generation? I mentioned Coldplay, how 'bout Hoobastank, and what else?)

Hey Skeptical thats funny that you mentioned the group Hole on your top 10 list. Its interesting that the the music industry has written Courtney Love off, claiming she never had anything good to contribute to the music world and that her career is overwith. The ironic thing is that Hole's album "live through this" (which I love) was in the Top 50 of Rolling Stones Top 500 albums of all time. Peole love to hate Courtney Love( and they have plenty of reason to hate her) that being said, the people that are ragging on her, also listen to Hole. As much as I hate Courtney Love, I have to admit "Live through This" was an excellent album.

Celebrity Skin was not a very good album(except for the title track) Way too poppy. I don't think she will ever be able to top "live through this". I'll be curious to hear Courtney's solo album when it comes out. Have you seen the Courtney Love Speacial On VH1?? Its so bad, its almost good. Infact its soo bad you can't stop watching it. Martin Bashere (SP) the guy famous for the Michael Jackson interview follows her around for a few months. It just confirms that she is a psychopath, and still has a bad coke problem. BUT Ive always heard that bands/singers make better music when they are on drugs. Its when they get clean and sober is when the music starts to suck.

Darktemper, that is Pretty bold of you to put "5150" in the Top 10 albums that every one should own. You honestly think that 5150 is better than the Fuck album, or 1984??? "5150" sounds like the most dated Van Halen album, especially with those awful drum kits that Michael uses. What would ever possess a drummer to use a drumkit?? Would you like some Mayo with that Cheeeesy cd?

Hah Mayonnaise, I really enjoy 5150. Not their GREATEST, and not in my top ten, but I like it a lot personally. Here's mine, in no random order. Boston - Boston Van Halen - 1984 Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast Rush - Moving Pictures AC/DC - Powerage AC/DC - Back In Black Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction Green Day - Dookie The one I CANNOT live without is: Rush - 2112.

Hey Darktemper, Sammy's Vocals on 5150 sound muffled to me. Maybe its the mic he is using or maybe they added something to his voice, not sure. BUT you want to hear Sammys Vocals??? "Balance" and the "Fuck" album REALLY show off sammy's vocals. Its those two albums that confirm that Sammy Hagar is a damn good singer, MUCH BETTER THAN Diamond Dave. Im glad you can overlook the Bad drumkit on "5150" because I sure can't. Just think how much better that album would sound if Michael used REAL DRUMS on that album!!!!!

OK - " Most IMPORTANT albums " Beatles - Sgt. Pepper - Fully realized concept album with groundbreaking producing. Queen - A Night at the Opera - You can hear the money spent on that. Green Day - American Idiot - Provided anthems for the next 20 years. Pearl Jam - Ten - You KNEW these guys were going to be around and were going to have something important to say for the rest of their career. Miles Davis - Take your pick on which album - Can make you se music with your eyes. Nivana - Nevermind - A kick in the nuts announcing everything for the next decade. Guns and Roses - Appetite for Destruction - Timeless and helped rock and roll stay alive. Even in the face of Grunge. It cannot be knocked down even one peg. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds - Highly influential on just about any band that cares about melody and chord progression and production. Prince - Purple Rain. Epic. Michael Jackson - Thriller - Provided the widest amount of crossover ever. The timing of this album along with the video age set new standards for what could be achieved. Pink Floyd - The Wall - Should have been a triple album. Provided a great outlet for a BAND on so many levels. U2 - Joshua Tree - My generation's Sgt. Pepper - was handed off to Green Day for this generation with American Idiot. Public Enemy - It takes a nation of millions - Socially conscious at a time in which someoen needed to be heard. There's so many more.

I'm not sure there are any albums "that everyone should own," since everyone's listening preferences are different, but here's my list: 1. John Mayer "Room for Squares" 2. Madonna "Like a Virgin" 3. Whitney Houston "Whitney" 4. Phil Collins "Love Songs: A Compilation" 5. Huey Lewis & The News "Sports" 6. John Cougar Melloncamp whichever one has "Jack & Diane" on it 7. Wham "Make it Big" 8. Heart "Dreamboat Annie" 9. Boston "Boston" 10. Bruce Springsteen "Born in the USA" Okay, now for the punchline: If EVERYONE owned those albums/CDs maybe radio stations would finally stop playing them to death! Wow .. Walk On? I liked it, best concert I've ever seen was Boston on that tour ... just surprising. Maybe I'm odd, I think my favorite Styx album is Paradise Theatre ... I can't get enough of that. Presto is VERY underrated, right up there with Signals as less-thought-of Rush work that is masterful.

Does anyone here appreciate "The Babys?"... this was John Waites orginal band, with mid-chart hits like "Isn't It Time", and others...great pop/rock hits in the early 80's. I really believe they were a nice transition between Disco and the new MTV sound of the 80's. One of those rare bands who seemed to squeeze between the genres. bV

Tears for Fears - "The Big Chair" Really great album. Had forgot all about it until this weekend. Was going through CD's and decided to pop it in. Well produced, lots of dynamics where they should be, excellent music composition and performance. Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Fear" This one is not for the weak of mind or heart. Serious topics given serious attention. Another well produced album, not as dynamic, but mixed well to highlight colorful and rich vocals. "Butterfiles", "Stories I tell" are two of my favorites on this album. This one will tickle your mind as well as your ears!

I've been playing tunes on the radio for too long, I guess. I can't think of any full CDs that I play at all, ever, anymore. There's plenty where I like a couple of tunes, but none where I think they're consistently good all the way through.

And that's the search right there. I've been back and forth. For a long while, I was strongly oriented toward tunes. From this perspective, many albums don't feature great songs. Maybe you get two or three and that's it. I find myself digging deeper these days. New stuff still is tune by tune, but as it all ages, the albums really shine. (Well, those good ones do anyway) IMHO, it takes a while for the expectations set by the made for radio tracks to wear off and leave one looking at the artist as a group. IMHO, a big part of this is the expectations set by the artist and if they understand what continuity means where an album is concerned. Some see the whole thing as just a collection of tracks. For those, it's difficult to make a solid album. Others see it as a chance to really take the expression to another level. Those albums are themed and often carry some elements across tunes. Great stuff when you can find it. Radio harms some albums because the wrong expectations get set. Too much hammering on the candy song, with little to no emphasis on the meat when there is some to emphasize. Often the really great albums, that can be enjoyed as a complete work, don't mesh well with the demands radio puts on them. Full CD's I will often play start to finish: (the two mentioned above) Rush - Show of Hands SAGA - Worlds Apart Fixx - Reach the Beach Dire Straits - Love over Gold Animal Logic - Animal Logic Thomas Dolby - Golden Age of Wireless Bare Naked Ladies - Stump & others... All of these have solid production values throughout and the various tunes share both a meaningful theme as well as common elements that serve to better tie the work as a whole together. Actually the production on the RUSH work is lacking, but hey, it's a live set. All is forgiven because of the energy on that CD. Of these, the SAGA album is probably the most excellent as it's tracks actually tell a great story. Reminds me of a movie never made each time I listen through. Albums that do all the things this one does are very rare, IMHO. It's an aquired taste though. The Rush one is simply a great collection of best of's. Common enough, these can be found in many genres. I've more of these for a lot of artists, maybe it should not be on the list because it works on shuffle just about as well as it does off. No real story on the Fixx album, but lots of solid and consistant production, variations in style that push things, but really don't lose the listener over the course of the whole work. Fixx sometimes deals with tough themes, as does BNL. Always good for a mental ride. Animal Logic, has a great style variation, but vocals and percussion is consistant. This one is just beautiful. It's that beauty that ties the work together for me. Shuffle sometimes breaks the mood on this one. If any of you play full albums as works, why? I'm always looking for others that just work, but not on shuffle, rather just played start to finish.

Concept/prog albums are the ones I most find myself playing without skipping ... 2112 definitely fits in that category for me, KSKD. Other ones that fit the bill: Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Rush - Hemispheres AC/DC - For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) - not a concept album, just a GREAT album without any weak tracks. Styx - Paradise Theatre (as mentioned above) I am sure there are others I am missing. It just seems that so many albums, going back a long ways, have "filler" material that is iffy at best, and when I find a group or album without any of that filler stuff, it just has all great stuff, I am a happy camper.
