There isn't a shred of music today that doesn't owe a bundle to James Brown. I'm a bass player, and on a personal level, he has always been a musical mentor to me. He broke the ground that has yielded bountiful musical harvests.

The last show I caught was in Portland, in the fine company of Craig Adams. JB was pushing 70 then, but you wouldn't have known it!

I've often thought of where I'd be when the news arrived that JB had passed. Now I know, and it's taken a lot of the shine off of Christmas this year.

Here's to the hardest working man in show business.

Yep. James Brown Is Heard in Everyones music today. His music is always Sampled in a lot of the hip hop/ Rap that is coming out today. James Brown was a true Legend. I have to admit over the last 10 years he never looked very healthy.

James Brown was a huge coke head. The news said he had heart failure due to pneumonia. I think the real reason he died was from way too much BLOW. His heart couldn't handle it.
it's a shame very few stations in portland play his music.

Amazing performer. This is a sad day --and why is it we don't hear much of his music today! It's still very relevant, IMHO!

James Brown was scheduled to do dates in Canada in mid-January. My local Oldies station (Cool 8-80) was even giving out tickets a month or so back. The Portland connection to all this is that he was also scheduled for two nights at the Red Robinson Theatre just outside Vancouver, Canada. Red was Canada's first Rock DJ, and very popular during his tenure at KGW-AM and -TV in the late '50s.

Because reelradio.com General Comments disappear after some period of time, I'll cut and paste a relevant one here, for interest:

From: tm (TerrellMetheny@cox.net) Monday, December 25, 2006 at 11:41:03

Forgive me for not being charitable with my memory of James Brown on this Christmas Day. I don’t recall if I ever met James Brown, but I have one very strong memory of him. It was 1969. As program director of WMCA, I had just hired Frankie Crocker to be evening jock. His joining WMCA was a rather historic event, as (I believe) he was the first black jock to work full time at a general market station in New York. However, let me hasten to say that he was not hired because he was black. He was hired because he was GREAT. As we were discussing his joining us, he told me that he was booked to mc a James Brown all black review at Madison Square Garden. I don’t remember the all star line up, but it was big. I thought nothing was more important that being on the air and had never allowed a jock off their regular air shift to appear at a personal appearance, so I was more than a bit reluctant to let Frankie off the air to do a personal appearance. But, Frankie explained that James was a friend as were the other stars on the show. And, this was a big deal and was very important to him. So, as part of his pre-employment agreement he was allowed off the air this one time to make an appearance. Early on the evening of the James Brown show, Frankie called me at home. He was in tears....said that when he entered the back stage dressing area....in front of all the stars appearing on the show...James very loudly called out to him and told him to “go home”, he couldn’t appear on the show. Called him “whitey” and said he’d “sold out”. I don’t recall everything said, but it was not kind. Frankie was crushed. As I remember he said something like: “I thought I had done good by getting on WMCA....an example to other younger guys that they could make it.....” That is my memory of the legendary James Brown. In fairness to James Brown, maybe he was just having a bad night and took out some frustration on Frankie....but, then.......maybe not. Regardless, no station I that I programmed or managed after that ever played another James Brown record. He didn’t experience discomfort from that, but I had some satisfaction. I feel certain that Frankie Crocker forgave James Brown, so I guess I should, too. But the memory of a crushed young Frankie Crocker, in tears, sprang vividly back into my mind when I heard of the passing of James Brown.

"and why is it we don't hear much of his music today!"

Too damn funky for the radio. Even now.

My favoritestests James Brown cuts ever:

10. Pass the Peas (the JB's)
9. Funky Drummer
8. Talkin Loud, Aint Sayin Nothin
7. I Know you Got Soul (Bobby Byrd)
6. Papa Don't Take No Mess
5. Soul Power ('74)
4. The Big Payback
3. Sex Machine
2. The Boss
1. Give It Up, Turn It Loose (Live)

I don't think JB was ever known to be a nice guy, but he was revolutionary. No matter how much he told us just how great he was, I can't deny that we owe a huge debt to him.

This is a huge loss to the music world...and the domestic violence world.

Nope James Brown was not a kind spirit, and infact downright rude to a lot of his fans. But then again, that was probably the drugs talking.

James Brown owned radio stations. In November 1967 he purchased a Knoxville TN station changing the calls to WJBE standing for James Brown Enterprises. WJBE operated on 1430 as a 1kw daytimer. In December 1967 James Brown bought two more radio stations: WEBB Baltimore MD & WRDW Augusta GA. WEBB operated on 1360 as a 5kw daytimer. WRDW operated on 1480 with 5kw unlimited. WJBE was sold in January 1978. WEBB was sold 11-20-79 & WRDW was sold in April 1980. Stations were sold because of financial problems.

Mrs M, I heard that when the question first popped up.I didn't want to go there but the explination(sp)...is very plausible and wouldn't be any more twisted than anything else we've been hearing.

(3/11/07, from playfuls.com music news service)...

The Godfather of soul," James Brown, was finally laid to rest in a crypt at the Beech Island, SC, home of one his daughters, Deanna Brown Thomas, pending the completion of a public mausoleum in an as-yet undisclosed location. He was buried at a private ceremony presided over by Rev. Al Sharpton.

His last partner Tomi Rae Hynie wants to build a mausoleum and transform their marital home in a museum, copying the Graceland enterprise.

"This is what James wanted, for the family to come together. Everyone really felt like James was there with us," Brown's partner, Tomi Rae Hynie, told AP.

"He was very private," said Sharpton, a longtime Brown confidant, according to AP. "Where he is now has nothing to do with court proceedings," Sharpton said.

"The children used their own funds to pay for their father's entombment so that their father could be put to rest without further delay," Sharpton, said a statement.

The reason he is not yet buried is that he was scheduled for a special guest appearance on CSI not yet filmed.
