sorry not glee. Just uh, ironic sad laughter. What a station COULD have been.
So sad. For about 6 months we even had the great KINK looking over their shoulder. That was fun.

The amount of talent permanently passing through the "OUT" door of that station is not only amazing, but a real tragedy.

That's why Salem will always be Salem.

They were so much more for that 15 minutes.

Too bad.

I don't understand this thread. Is it off the air? It's streaming online - at least SOMEthing is, from their website.

Is the title of this thread missing an adverb?

I just checked from Hillsboro...they are indeed on the air. I think the phrase "Salem over Portland" is just a reference to the fact that, although this is a Salem station, it does cover Portland to a certain extent. It is not a strong signal, but it can be heard in the Portland suburbs.

Dan had eliminated threads not relevant to Portland. "Salem over Portland" is way to make it relevant.

Any clue as to the remark about Geno? It's phrased as if he's gone. Although he's listed on the website still.

It's not a big deal. But the tone of the posts seem to sound like something big ( signal, personnel changes ) happened.

Did it?

Other than Tim Ryan not being there.

Yeah. I swear I don't FEEL like an idiot. But I'm still not getting it.

" Matt " is gone? Is that what Mrs. Merkin is referring to?

And Dodger, was your " good luck " to Geno just something to say like " Good luck working without Matt "? I (possibly mis)interpreted it as " Good luck and so long."

And where do babies come from?

Hey, wait! I don't get the thread title either...I was just making a general comment. I'm confused (as per usual) also.

And CJ, (James Brown and) I can explain the answer to your other question if you'd like...

a former KSKD engineer recently reminded me LEN E MITCHEL used to logo his KSKD with the ID
KSKD SALEM over PORTLAND...I thought it would be funny to bring it back on this thread...a joke of Christmas past, perhaps. Matt is gone, as is Ryan, GENO is doing mornings.

This seems to be the first radio shakeup of the new year. Matt always reminded me of a smooth fm dj, and tim was kind of wild for the format
( albeit funny) .

so, did they quit? were they fired?

"LEN E MITCHEL used to logo his KSKD with the ID
KSKD SALEM over PORTLAND."

In the case of KSKD, the slogan was a better fit, as KSKD (now KRSK) covered Portland very well (City Grade-60dBu strength) from a transmitter site east of Silverton:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM285442.html

Later the transmitter moved to Portland, but with much less power:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM590743.html

Compare to KSND's coverage:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1071157.html

Which can be heard, but is weak, from some Portland suburbs.

KSKD broadcast from the channel 22 antenna. "Salem over Portland" was an apt description of its coverage of the latter. Q105 moved to the Cascades and it wasn't until then, that 105.1 had a competitive signal.

So 105.1 used 3 different transmitter locations to start out in Salem and end up in Portland?

Yep...they are currently on their 4th TX site...all to move to Portland...so much for serving it's original city of license.

Steve is really on medical leave, Dodger. He'll return if/when he's able.

Matt Richards, from what I've heard, was not a good team player. I think moving Geno to mornings is a positive change.

Lots of stations make personnel changes all the time. Funny that the little Monmouth pea shooter gets so much attention.

Jr. tech: The 105.1 transmitter sites were and are:

1970: Bald Hill.
1982: KECH TV tower (5252 Davis Creek Rd).
1988: KUTF TV tower (High Camp).
2004: Skyline tower (299 N.W. Skyline Blvd).

Craig_adams:

Thanks for the timeline and locations... so it appears that by the time 105.1 moved to High Camp, it was no longer KSKD, but had changed call letters to KXYQ, so my depiction (above) of KSKD covering Portland from High Camp is incorrect.

However, KSKD from the KECH (22) tower, and earlier from the Bald Hill location (also as KSLM-FM) @ 850 feet, 100KW (according to Jones 9th edition-1973) put a far better signal into the Portland area than KSND presently does, which was the point that I was trying to make.

Four distinct transmitter locations... is this the most used to move a transmitter to Portland ?

Be interesting to see if any other FM's in the country had more than 4 moves (Arizona waiver) to do a "move in" to the major market.

The signal from Bald Hill was pretty weak up here. It was possible to orient your antenna to pick it up but it seemed to be mostly blocked by the southern hills. I doubt if many people listened or were even aware of its existence. That's still more than I can say for KSND but that's to be expected. From the KECH 22(best call letters ever)tower, it was definitely a rimshot.
