You're way light on Beatles and America.

Beatles:
Taxman, Hello Goodbye, Lady Madonna.

America:
Sister Golden Hair, Lonely People, Don't Cross The River, Daisy Jane.

Punch it up with some Badfinger while you're at it:

Badfinger:
No Matter What, Come & Get It, Day After Day, Baby Blue, Without You [Or the popular Nilsson version]

I also heard these quite a bit on KSKD back in the day(most likely as 'Gold'):

Queen-Killer Queen
Jefferson Airplane-White Rabbit

And these as currents/new:

Aldo Nova-Fantasy
Van Halen-Jump
Duran Duran-Hungry Like The Wolf

(and digging really deep now):

Musical youth-Pass The Dutchie
Thomas Dolby-She Blinded Me With Science
Eddy Grant-Electric Avenue
The Fixx(?)-One Thing Leads To Another
Madness-Our House
Men Without Hats-Safety Dance

and at least a couple of songs from "Flock Of Seagulls."

I seem to remember the KSKD played quite a bit of the "New Wave" type stuff that my little sister liked in the early 80's.

"Dolby Stereo, K-S-K-D."

and the clssic ID:

"Serving the Great Northwest with 100,000 watts of Music Power, K-S-K-D Salem over Portland"

Who was the female who did some of the voice work for KSKD?

This is harder to do with the KISN Time Machine playing in the background.

>>What are words for? - ???

That is “Words” by Missing Persons

>>Kids of America - ???

Might be “Kids In America” by Kim Wilde

More on the way.

Interesting list...

I will preface this with the fact I don't know much about KSKD...but there seem to be quite a number of "stiffs" on this list. If that was the intention, and these days, (Charlie, Jack, Bob), perhaps that was indeed the intention.

The "Oh Wow" factor is definitely there, but so is the "Wow, what in the hell was that?" may also be there.

Just a programmer's opinion...

Paul, that's a good summary of what KSKD was about. They took a lot of chances on then new releases, many of which became stiffs. However, for a time they were the closest thing to CHR that Salem and Portland had.

Thanks everyone.

There is one that drives me nuts! Heard it while falling asleep long ago. "I believe" was the title, but my memory of the artist is "chiolowak" --remember the sound of the announcer, but not what my brain translated the meaning to. Any guesses?

---and they played the long version of Safety Dance. Have that 12" somewhere. Actually, they would toss the extended mixes in on a lotta tunes from time to time.

Queen - "Thing Called Love" was played also.

Paulwalker, those elements are what I miss about the station. They went through moods and trends, blending them together over time. The automation was done from tapes that held 15 to 20 tunes. (I'm trying to remeber the number from the actual playlists I've got somewhere, but can't find after moving...)

This forced sets, that I think current systems ignore because of their more or less infinite selection pool. To make it all go well, meant putting groups of tunes together in creative ways, that allowed for the linear nature of the tape. Would be interesting to emulate this on modern day systems, IMHO. Programming would be harder than on a rotation based system, but the results would have a distinct texture to them.

This artifact of the tapes mitigated the "Wow, what in the hell was that?" factor, as the playsets were limited in scope. One could have a fairly wide playset, and be sure there were no trainwrecks, ala Charlie. Put another way, only a small subset of tunes could be played at any one time. Those subsets always contained the same tunes --and in the same order, I believe.

That list needs to be tempered with the fact that it spans quite a bit of time as well. If you were to sort those tunes by their release date, the list would make more sense as they were introduced in a slow blend, keeping a few signatures along the way for longer times.

Who did "Leader of the Band"? Can't stand that tune, but KSKD played the heck out of it for a while. (Long while too.)

Yep. As soon as I read it, I could hear Mr. Mullens voice ring in my head. (Along with a nice photo memory of an amplifier / tuner combo I had just finished fixing. All that work and that tune was first outta the gate!)

God I hated that tune! Thanks, now after it's added to the list, I'll promptly forget who did it again!

Randy in my former town...

Chilliwack. Wow. KJR and KING in Seattle played them a bit, (and I really mean, a "little" bit), but unlike Canadian content laws, Seattle stations dumped them pretty quickly and nobody really cared.

T'pau was purely a pop song, so I wonder if KINK really ever played it. I believe it's chart numbers are fairly decent though.

Yeah, good old "Can Con." If the CRTC hadn't enacted those regs, all of North America might have been saved from having to hear "Seasons In the Sun" from Vancouver's Terry Jacks.

I'd rather listen to Chilliwack any day...

April Wine's "Just Between You and Me" was on KSKD(quite a bit if I remember correctly) but their earlier stuff such as 1972's "You Could Hve Been A Lady" (has a really cool intro) is more to my taste.(OK, I know, I have bad taste in music, but I like what I like!)

When I was in high school KSKD was the only FM we could receive clearly where we lived.(It was also great for recording songs off the radio because there were no DJs talking over the music!)

Len E. Mitchel was the last PD of KSKD. When Bobby King left KDUK, Len became PD of KSKD bringing Keith Miller with him. Both Len and Keith in my opinion were audiophiles who were very focused on the technical sound. It was apparent this was their love at KSKD. At KSKD I would guess there was little processing. However they couldnt achieve the same sound at KDUK because of the horrible transmitter location in the coast range.

Unfortunately I don't know what happened to Len after being fired at KDUK. Keith Miller was involved at KSND Newport and apparently attempted the same strategy that had worked at KSKD but failed. I think Radioexpert told me he got an email from Keith even saying he wouldnt use a compressor!

It's hard to imagine KSKD without an Optimod, but I do remember it being a very clear station with greater dynamics.

Anyway if anyone knows the whereabouts of Len or Keith I'm sure they kept the playlists.

As I recall, KSKD was literally a Hot 100 station. They played just about anything off of Billboard's current Hot 100 and very little else. I don't even remember non-currents. They picked up a fair amount of listeners though because they were the only hit based station for a time. There was a point when KMJK had switched to Soft AC and KGW had evolved to AC. KCNR was masquerading as CHR but I don't remember if it evolved or was always that way. It was pretty hard to tell in the early 80s because pop was so soft at that time.

Greg,

Actually KSKD ran C.R.L. processing, although you are right, it was not turned up very much. The station was very much about preserving the audio. Also, as I recall, the Dolby encoding process that was on KSKD at the time did not do well when presented with heavily processed audio.

As for KSND when they were in Newport/Lincoln City, they ran an Optimod 8200, so yes, Keith was using compression as well as multi-band limiting. The processing was just not set up to crush the audio like it is normally set to do.

Both KSND and KSKD were unique stations that were more interested in fidelity than dial dominance, which may be an interesting topic for another thread.

Sorry, all of those old cassettes (and 8-tracks(!)) are "Gone, Gone, Gone."

I do remember the switchover of KSKD to Q105 and the dramatic change in the programme audio. KSKD was crisp and clear but Q105 was just plain LOUD.(especially with Ron Leonard behind the mike!)

After the format change from MOR to "Top 40," in about 1973, pre-1978 105.1 (KSLM FM, KORI, KSKD) was less Hot 100 and more Top 40.

Initially, currents were on reel tape. However, a cart carousel eventually was added and this placed 23 "Currents" running in the carousel and these were voice tracked. Some of the 17 remaining of the Billboard Top 40 would rotate in and out of the carousel, keeping in mind that not necessarily all the chart was aired on 105.1, altho' I can't remember exceptions right now.

After a time, the songs falling off the current list ended up on reels, mixed in with oldies. But there would be a hole in the playlist for awhile, because a recurrent reel was not produced. Oldies went back to 1959 or 60 in some cases, but the earliest "rock-n-roll" years were aired sparingly.

Beatles and Stones were there too, but conservatively. Unlike today's 1067, you could go a day or two on 105.1 and not hear a Beatles or Stones tune. And on 105.1 we said "point."

Olivia Newton-John, John Denver, Carly Simon, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Rita Coolidge, Leo Sayer, America, Al Stewart, Chicago, Al Green, Reunion, Kenny Rogers, all come to mind. In fact, if I'd written that last sentence differently, you'd have a believable, but long, set on 1977 era 105.1

This process changed when KSKD introduced TM's "Stereo Rock" package, which I think was in about 1977 or 78 and about when the call changed to KSKD. Again, I can't remember exceptions right now, but the splicing block was sometimes used to cut out some of TM's stuff and insert KSKD's own choices, especially when Len E. came on as PD.

Beginning in mid to late 1978, Orban's Optimod FM was added to the 1971 vintage Harris exciter and a phase compensator was added at the transmitter end of the audio loop to compensate for the 15KC phone lines between studio and tower. The original Harris peak limiters were kept in the audio chain at the studio end, but only to very lightly clamp down on peaks sent up the phone line. These were dumped by the time the transmitter was moved to Davis creek and a Mosley STL instlled.

But, this thread began with playlists, so I'll think a bit more about those 70s era playlists.
