Actually, old Gordo has a whole new outlook on life seeing his re-election looming in 2008. His son's suicide didn't seem to change his outlook in the last session where he mostly sided with George W. Bush.

As Andrew said, this is about his re-election. I'd love to see John Kitzhaber run for that seat in 2008 and steal it away from Smith.

Damn shame that Kitz won't run - he would win the seat fairly easily, I think. But I get the idea he has no interest in national politics.

I would have liked to see him run as well. At least he took solid stands on things.
Smith is really just all about making as many people happy as he can as much of the time as is possible...
