What one thing send you over the deep end when out driving amongst the idiot's? When do you cross that line from courteous driver to hell on wheels?

I think the one thing that boils my blood is the guy reading the patent number on my tail lights he is following so close when there are 30 cars in front of me and I like to leave some stopping room in front of me. WERE THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO GO? Get off me DORK! A courtesy flash of the bake lights first and if no response then a simple downshift to a lower gear and letting off of the gas which results in a rapid deceleration without lights really wakes those suckers up!!

Driving UNDER the speed limit.

Portland is full of these a-holes. My wife didn't believe me when I bitched about it incessantly until we drove back east two summers ago and flew to Chicago and drove from there last summer.

People who drive UNDER the speed limit, especially in the passing lanes, need to be flogged.

Two things drive me crazy on the road (pun intended). One is when some speed demon comes up right behind me at 65 miles per hour and is as close as he can be without touching me. Also when I am on the left lane, on the way to church, a truck is on the right lane. A slow driver is right behind the truck and he sneaks right in front of me forcing me to tap my break and my cruise control knob goes off.

What I do when someone talegates me is I turn on my emergency break lights. Usually that works.I notice there isn't near as much of that. I think the police are looking for those jerks. Its a $400 fine I think.

Actually no, these were the Chrysler products with the big fins. I remember the ads for the "Swept Wing Dodge". It was a hot terminology as jets were getting swept wings about then. It was what inspired the 1959 Cadillac with the huge fins.

Just thought of another annoyance whilst driving.

People who meander down a freeway onramp and never look to merge onto the freeway. They just expect that there will be a place for them when they get around to merging. Grrrrrrr. How dare you not get over for them and because there was a car in your way is no excuse...don't you realize they own the road you are driving on!!!!! They are not even out front of you so you can't slow down for them......CRAP man...get a clue....two cars cannot occupy the same space at the same time!!!!! Then they get all pissy with you after they do get on the freeway.....like you could have done anything different!!!! 9 out of 10 times they are usually chatting away on the cell phone not looking and no signal.....as I said Grrrrrrr.

And then there as those people that are better than others and chose to run well beyond the merge lane just to pass as many insugnifigant cars that are just clearly obstacles in their way and should just really get off of his road!!!! Double Grrr Grrrrrr. Makes me want to get an old land yacht and put a semi-truck steel frame rail all of the way around it and play freeway bumper cars!!!! NOW THAT COULD BE FUN!!!!

vent complete.....

Dark, that's a biggie for me too.

It's bizzare too, you push it right to the edge, suddenly they look and just go nuts! (Which could have been prevented with a signal and some looking ahead...

Another one is drifters. You never know if they are actually gonna do the lane change, or if they are drunk, stupid, sleeping or what!

Three things:

Tailgating in heavy traffic. There is just no need for this, because when traffic is heavy, there's simply no where to go.

Slow drivers in the fast lane. If you are a do-gooder and are unable to drive faster than the speed limit, the fast lane is not for your enjoyment. Move over!

Drivers who are behind you when getting onto the freeway and then pass you on the left before you can even merge. Wait your turn asshole!

I guess in California it is considered a sign of weakness to use a signal. And from the looks of things anymore in Portland....maybe time to rename the city to "HOTEL CALIFORNIA" The retirement community of choice for californians!

In my book though simply not signaling is a sign of rudeness!!!!

Also....you notice that the more expensive the car the more often the turn signal is non-functional.....or wait.....is it the driver that is non-functional....

I hate a driver that is at an intersection on his cell phone when the light turns green and won't move but still keeps talking even after I honk my horn. Then when the light turns yellow he starts up again. The yellow signal means to stop according to the drivers manual.

Crotch rocket sport bike driver's (organ donor's) really surprise me when you look up and see one in your rear view mirror close enough to climb in your car with you. And in heavy traffic. Plus when you can get over safely and just as you start to move over the impatient SOB make's his move around you and pretty much cut's you off!!!!

Guess there brake's are quicker' and more responsive should I need to stop suddenly.....either that or they are goods at acrobatics in doing cartwheel's over my car when they plow into the ass end of it!!!! If anyone should not tailgate biker's are at the top of the list....is it not already dangerous enough out there already for you biker type's. I always head check's and try to keep track of these guys when I share the road with them but the crazy rider's are hard to do that with and you never know where they will pop up!!!

Whenever there is no traffic in the right lane I use that lane. The problem is that the right lane is often occupied by drivers who go at least 5 miles under the speed limit and thats a bit too slow for me. Thats's at least the case on the 205 freeway.

Why is it that people insist on going 30 miles per hour in a 35 mph road? I am lucky enough to have an automatic but I have worn out a stick shift from driving 30 miles per hour behind somebody in 3rd gear. I can't drive in 4th gear very well at that speed.

Its a speed limit, you cant go faster, there are lots of times, there are reasons to drive under it, bad weather, work crews, etc.

A lot of people do go faster than 35 miles per hour. Its just that what gets me mad is that people who drive slower should at least drive in the right lane in a 4 lane highway except to turn. That would cause a lot less headaches. We should be able to drive the speed limit if we want to but a lot of times thats not possible

The funny thing about this topic is it doesn't matter where you live, where you're from, or where you're going...everybody complains about other drivers. I love George Carlin's old line, (paraphrasing...) people driving slower than you are "idiots", and people driving faster than you are "maniacs".

But Northwesterners do have a few quirks.

1. Simply seeing a California plate immediately makes that driver insane.

2. There are actually people who deliberately drive slowly in the fast lane to frustrate others.
(I have had people admit this to me!)

3. Honking is considered to be extremely rude, and many take it as "fightin' words".

4. And finally, the NW is where small town drivers think Portland and Seattle have crazy, aggressive drivers, while at the same time those from bigger cities (LA, Bay Area), think we are meek and timid on the road. I guess it is all about perceptions.

Portland drivers and Seattle drivers are nowhere near alike.

Om the rare moments that Seattle drivers are actually moving AT ALL, it's bumper to bumper 70+ mph. Ahhh yes, a group of people with a sense of urgency. They wanna get somewhere! Now **THAT** is what I am talking about.

Portland drivers are more like Spokane drivers in that they are pedestrian and have no sense of urgency ... Portland is worse though, because they do it in the left lane. For the most part, people in Spokane are smart enough to stay to the right to let people pass.

Another traffic-related thing here that pisses me off to no end are the incessant jaywalkers who jump out in the middle of the street and EXPECT me to stop on a dime so they can walk right in front of me. When I grew up in Spokane, those people more often than not got clipped, and nothing happened to the driver. We learned to walk the extra 20 yards to the crosswalk and cross with the light.

Novel concept, I know.

----
That brings up another pet peeve of mine. What in the world is the deal with the walk signs? Why is it that its only on for a split second and turns on the blinking red and stays there for 20 seconds? I drive on 82nd avenue and see more wrecks involving pedestrians and cars who turn right at fast speeds. Why do they need the blinking red light on at all? I was in one city in which the pedestrians all crossed at the same time and the cars couldn't move until they were through. Some intersections are impossible to cross with the walk light on. What I hate is when some moron walks across the street at the green light and sticks his middle finger at me.

Found this and it speaks volumes:

"Experts state that the major causes of car accidents are driver distractions. Dangerous distractions that can lead to an accident include cell phones and other gadgets that drivers use as they drive. Cell phones, laptops, electric razors, etc. causes drivers to take their eyes off the road for seconds at a time with the potential to cause a serious, if not deadly, accident. In response to this, some states in the US have banned the use of hand-held cell phones while people are driving. The alternative is to use a hands free ear bud that is lightweight and comfortable, and allows a driver to carry on a conversation without diversions."

Went to car toys just the other day and it's no wonder with all of the gadgets you can get for your car. Good Greif....now even the driver can watch a movie with one of those slide out pop up screen in dash DVD players. That will be good! 9 out of 10 people on the freeway driving under the speed limit are usually talking on cell phones....pull over to the side of the road. With all of the tech available to let people go hands free 85 out of 100 drivers still hold the phone to their ear. Hands Free is now be a law in some states. People do not do head checks, use their signal, and other vital driving needs while they hold that phone to their ear. What will be the next innovation to land in the drivers lap to further distract him from what he is supposed to be doing.....driving the car!

OH YAH....
Drinking (alcohol), Eating, and Personal Hygiene are some of the other top causes of accidents. Saw some lady at a stop light the other day putting on mascara and the light changed....the guy behind her waited a little bit then laid on the horn...she is lucky she did not put that thing in her eye the way she jumped....needless to say I think it may have wound up in places she did not want it to! LOL

Driving slower than the speed limit becasue you are angry with the person behind you is still a form of road rage. Any action you take on the road as a retalitory action is road rage. I find like with most things it easier just to go around these people and not give them the satisfaction of knowing I let them upset me.....that is what they seek...to be a nusense to ohers and get noticed. I have no problem though when it is some cute girl in a convertible in summer.....heck...i'll go less than the speed limit and stay right next to her!!!LOL

Well, that might cause another type of "raging".

But, yes, yes, yes Dark, it's best to not make eye contact, and stare straight ahead and pretend like nothing happened. This is the best prevention of both tickets and accidents. However, it took me years of driving to finally figure this out. It's amazing how many have not.

That pretty much speaks volumes. Just turn up the radio and cruise right by or let them cruise by you like they are not even there. Looking at them will just escalate the issue by inciteing them to fly the bird at you or mouth foul words to you. By not allowing that to happen you win win win! I refuse to let someone behind me push me into breaking the law just because they are late or something....when I can possibly get over or out of there way I do so....It is not worth the frustration to take them on.

Just don't get in front of me either cause my brakes are shot and I use the cars in front of me to get stopped with. I usually pick on the ones whose turn signals don't work or the drivers talking on the phone. After the first bump they hit the brakes and we both stop that way. They get kind of pissy though after the third time you've nailed em'! LOL

They really need a "MENTALLY CHALLANGED" lane on the freeway's. One with old tires and hay bales lining both sides of it. Let the idiot's and drunks in it and leave the other lanes for the ....mostly OK drivers. Something tells me though that most of the traffic will be in the "SPECAIL" lane....LOL

You want to tail gate me, have at it, but 99% of the cars are going to end up on the short end of the stick, if they hit my car ( a 67 GMC PU).

The very few time I have been stopped, the officer sees my retired badge, and just says have a nice day sir.

Oh, and if someone really tried to direct road rage at me, I am never without a 40 Cal Sig.

White, I follow the law, I don't speed, thers no reason, difference between 55 and 65, is at most a couple of minutes on most trips.

When it rains, you should decrease your speed, some, and increase the distance to the vehicle in front of you

If everyone would follow simple safety precautions, everyone would get where their going quicker, and we would waste less gas.

Actually, I drive very little, I take Max and C-tran most places. I walk to the store.

You curse that little old man, going way too slow, well theres a good chance he was at Normandy, or Gualdlalcanel, or otherwise served his country faithfully, and deserves a little consideration in his older years.

I don't curse him.....I usually just go around and if I can't and as I am unable to really do anything about it I just hang back patiently as possible and wait till I can...no good trying to push anyone...But in all honesty they should not be in the left lane with unlimited driving conditions under the posted limit. I still see people who will tailgate someone like that on a 3 lane freeway when the other 2 lanes are open.....why.....just go around! Don't make sense sometimes why people do stupid things like that.

I find it very amusing to stay at the limit in the right or middle lane and watch the circus all around me. I of course won't impeed traffic but more often than not there are trucks in the right lane at 60 so I take the middle at 70 (posted speed in that area) and still people...."MUST GO FASTER....FASTER.....AAAAHHH"! It's like an addiction or something. But the middle lane is not the fast lane so get of my backside cause I ain't gonna speed for you pal so go around.

What gets me is that people insist on speeding no matter what the conditions are on the road. I drove home late night from work when it was snowing and there was snow on the road and I couldn't believe the speeders there were on the freeway!

Here in Nebraska we are able to get a good laugh out of seeing the SUV safely parked in a snowbank in the median after they've gone sailing past. Some of these SUV drivers seems to think their SUV tuns an icy hiway into a dry surface. They sure get a shock.

We always sit outside on bad days and watch the change of shifts going to the shipyards at lunch. Our street ends in a 90 degree left turn and it is comical to see them slide around the corner out of control!!!!! Entertaining show to say the least. Most fun to watch when we have Ice storms!!!!! 4WD....SUV....Studded Tires....none help if you are going to fast. One guy bounced all of the way over the curb once..got out..locked it..and walked the rest of the way to work.....just a couple of blocks!!! Spouted a few choice words at the two flats as he stormed off!!!

I like to drive the speed limit sometimes when I don't have anywhere in particular to be and/or I'm going for good fuel economy, but there are other times when it would be nice if people around here would have even the slightest bit of lane discipline.

Self-righteous do-gooders need to remember, impeding traffic, left-lane-banditry, failing to keep-right-except-when-passing is all just as illegal as speeding(although you wouldn't know it from the way the laws are enforced).

left-lane-banditry, I'm going to have to look that up in the criminal code.

Actually, there are only a few places that require slower traffic to keep to the right lane.

And there is no law prohibiting "impeding" traffic, as long as you are withen the speed limits, (some highways have a minimum speedlimit). you must be from california, where that law does exist.

Better watch out who you blow by in Vancouver......those you think to be do gooders may actually be unmarked police cars. They are driving a wide variety of vehicles in Washington now and are sometime difficult to pick out of a crowd.....like someone said here earlier...NWokie I believe... How much time is it really gonna save you on your trip...is that extra 3 or 4 miles an hour really worth the frustration? The root of this problem is that people try to cut things to close and have to rush to get places on time. Leave early, drive safe, get there a little early and in a calm state of mind!

I have to chime in on the idiots in the left lane taking their time. Also I have noticed both WA and OR plates tailgating. Apparently is a passtime for people when the police announce they are going to be watching for tailgating and not about speeding. (Not that they don't look for that because they do)

And for what its' worth a former Oregon State Trooper told me recently that he believed that Oregon had terrible drivers and Washington state drivers were infamous for tailgating.

I guess the other thing that pisses me off, there are three or four lanes and your on one lane and no one is on the others and a driver decides to start tailgating you and your not even in the left lane....

When I departed Oregon in '05, they were still trying to figure out if the speed limit was going to move from 65 to 70 on rural interstates. I heard it was approved, but none that I am aware of have been raised. Anybody know where all that stands now?

Also, it has been my experience that most drivers average 5-7 MPH over the posted limit on freeways.
In places like Nevada and Idaho that means about 82. In Washington it's about 77. However, with Oregon being one of the only western states with a 65 limit, I remember the average still seemed to be closer to Washington's 77 or so.

Despite all these numbers, I really believe that speed isn't the most important element of good driving. What does matter is that the driver is paying attention, respects other drivers, and follows the basic rules of the road (other than speed). In this case, many countries in Europe are way ahead of us.

I occasionally see someone driving while, yes, smoking a bowl.

One time my wife and I are in the parking lot of the Home Depot at Mall 205, I had just bought our first house and we were loading up. ($4000 and my VW Bus filled to the top, we loaded up!) We're loading all this stuff in my Bus and I look out and see this lady who has to be in her 50s .. driving around the lot, holding the steering wheel with her knees, lighting up a bowl of pot. Needless to say, I was incredulous. I said, "HEY HONEY, THE OLD LADY'S SMOKING A BOWL!!" Sure nuff, she comes around again, knees in the same position, lighter in one hand and pipe in the other up to her mouth ... my wife about fell over.

Just because you have your medicinal marijuana card doesn't mean you spark up while DRIVING, grandma.

About two weeks later I passed a van on the 205 bridge driving home from work and sure enough, the driver was lighting up a bowl while driving. As you can imagine, he was doing about 40 in a 60 mph zone, he glared at me enough for me to realize that dude was seriously baked.

PaulWalker, your cited site (hah!) actually disproves your claim that Oregon doesn't have a "keep right" law.

"Most states follow the Uniform Vehicle Code and require drivers to keep right if they are going slower than the normal speed of traffic (regardless of the speed limit)", and Oregon is one.

And Nwokie- You seem to be proof that cops don't really know the law as well as they think they do.

811.130 Impeding traffic; penalty. (1) A person commits the offense of impeding traffic if the person drives a motor vehicle or a combination of motor vehicles in a manner that impedes or blocks the normal and reasonable movement of traffic.

811.295 Failure to drive on right; exceptions; penalty. (1) A person commits the offense of failure to drive on the right if the person is operating a vehicle on a roadway of sufficient width and the person does not drive on the right half of the roadway.

(2) A person is not required to drive on the right side of the roadway by this section under any of the following circumstances:

(a) When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction under the rules governing this movement in ORS 811.410 to 811.425 or 811.808.

(b) When preparing to turn left in an intersection, alley or private road or driveway.

(c) When an obstruction or condition exists making it necessary to drive to the left of the center of the roadway, provided that a driver doing so shall yield the right of way to all vehicles traveling in the proper direction upon the unobstructed portion of the roadway within a distance as to constitute an immediate hazard.

(d) Upon a roadway divided into three marked lanes for traffic under the rules applicable on the roadway under ORS 811.380.

(e) Upon a roadway restricted to one-way traffic.

(3) The offense described in this section, failure to drive on the right, is a Class B traffic violation. [1983 c.338 §615; 1991 c.

811.315 Failure of slow driver to drive on right; exceptions; penalty. (1) A person commits the offense of failure of a slow driver to drive on the right if the person is operating a vehicle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing and the person fails to drive:

(a) In the right-hand lane available for traffic; or

(b) As close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.

(2) This section does not apply under any of the following circumstances:

(a) When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction under the rules governing passing in ORS 811.410 to 811.425.

(b) When preparing to turn left at an intersection, alley or private road or driveway.

(3) The offense described in this section, failure of slow driver to drive on the right, is a Class B traffic violation. [1983 c.338 §619; 1995 c.383 §57]

Does your comment about your badge getting you off the hook for traffic violations imply that cops are above the law, at least in case of driving infractions? Do you agree this should be so?

Here's a way for the Law Enforcement community to increase revenues;

There needs to be a little box on traffic tickets called "Being Stupid In Public". If the person is doing something stupid, the officer can check this box and it should triple the fine!!

I've seen people enter the highway and head straight to the left lane even though there are no other vehicles in the other lanes.

I was always taught that on a 3 lane highway, the right lane is for entering and exiting the highway, the center lane is for thru traffic and the left lane is for passing.

My related peeve:

People who are merging onto the freeway, who think they have the right-of-way and don't even look or check the traffic already on the freeway.

And/or going 27 mph to enter a major highway.

Daily example: I-84, from I-205 into town...grrrr

Washington-plated Mini vans deserve a general, no-special-reason triple-fine ticket. They are the WORST!

One day on I-5, I was following a mini-van going 75 that was swerving all over the lane, so I figured I needed to get past the idiot before they killed me. As I passed, I looked at the driver, and she was reading a paperback book. Probably a trashy romance novel.

And why does half of Vancouver have kids jumping around in the car that are not in car seats? Because it's Vantucky?

Maybe I am annoyed by them more now because they "rice" out their imports and make them sound like a Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine on steroids, add all of this ridiculous plastic bodykit stuff to them (compromising the integrity of the car itself when they DO wrap it around a telephone pole) ... it's just annoying.

At least when we were growing up with souped-up muscle cars, they had a throaty menacing sound and would actually be something you can walk away from when you wrecked it. The exhaust was something more than a Folger's can attached to your tailpipe.
