First it was smoking, now its Trans fat.
Restaurants must eliminate artery-clogging ingredient by July 2008. Restaurants will be barred from using most frying oils containing artificial trans fats by July and will have to eliminate the artificial trans fats from all of their foods by July 2008.
But restaurant industry representatives called the ban burdensome and unnecessary.“We don’t think that a municipal health agency has any business banning a product the Food and Drug Administration has already approved,” said Dan Fleshler, a spokesman for the National Restaurant Association.

Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said recently that officials seriously weighed complaints from the restaurant industry, which argued that it was unrealistic to give them six months to replace cooking oils and shortening and 18 months to phase out the ingredients altogether.

The ban contains some exceptions; for instance, it would allow restaurants to serve foods that come in the manufacturer’s original packaging.

Chains must list calories
Trans fats are believed to be harmful because they contribute to heart disease by raising bad cholesterol and lowering good cholesterol at the same time. Some experts say that makes trans fats worse than saturated fat.

The panel also passed another measure that has made restaurants unhappy: Some that chose to inform customers about calorie content will have to list the information right on the menu. The rule would generally apply to fast-food restaurants and other major chains.

Sheila Weiss, director of nutritional policy for the restaurant association, said the rule would be a disincentive for restaurants to provide any nutritional information.

KFC has stated they will no longer be using Trans Fats at all of their Chains. More reason to eat at KFC(LOL). Although I have to admit Im more partial to Popeyes Fried chicken.- Extra Hot, with their spicy mashed potatoes and a biscut- YUMMY!

Im more curious about the huge chains like Krispey Cream. Those donuts are lard pellets with tons of trans fats and what about Mcdonalds? I guess they will have to make the switch.

The media has Blown trans fats WAAAAAY out of proportion. Like everything else, trans fats must be eatin in moderation. The problem is, these pigolas, which make up half of this country LIVE on this stuff. This is a step in the right direction, BUT people will start to think that they can live on this type of diet day after day.
Is there such thing as deep-fried Mayonnaise, now THAT sounds good!

Smoking I understand, because second hand smoke adversely affects others.

Trans fat? Are you kidding me?

This is a tough one. Obesity is a huge problem here in the US, and it's getting worse. The amount of fat asses I see these days is staggering, especially younger kids and teenagers. If you're fat at 18, just imagine what you'll look like at 30! It would be good have as much effort made as possible to make people eat better.

But, I tend to find my self favoring choice. I'd rather see a requirement to disclose on the menu whether trans fats are used, and let the consumer make the choice. I think the more disclosure, the better. I can understand being a restaurant owner that this may be a pain too.

cigs or trans fats, what's the difference. They will both end up killing you one way or another. Most people in this country are stupid, overweight and unhealthy. They feed their kids Mcdonalds diets and then complain that their children are over weight. Obesity is an epidemic and needs to be stoped. When people are not smart enough to make healthy decisions, maybe thats when the government needs to step in.
On that note, Im off to get some popeyes fried chicken. Anybody want anything??

If I'm sitting next you and you're smoking, I'm breathing it. If you're eating fish and chips cooked in trans fat, you're hurting only yourself, as MY health is not being compromised.

There is NO comparison of smoking bans to trans fat bans. Apples and oranges...

Timberfake>> Most people in this country are stupid...

Agreed, but there is no law against it.

Timberfake>> When people are not smart enough ... the government needs to step in.

But how far do you want to take this? Next thing they will be jailing pot smokers. :-)

While America has been getting fatter in recent years there is a concurrent trend towards healthier eating and living. Note the decline of Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts, and the increasing number of Gold's Gyms popping up.

The government needs to keep it's laws out of my fat ass.

But if there is ever compelling evidence that there OUGHT to be a law against stupidity, they only need peek in this forum. :-)

You talking bout those who are just to damn stupid to ever admit they are wrong on anything and as a result to have people just continue to attack them as a result when a simple apology would end it once and for all!!!

"cigs or trans fats, what's the difference. They will both end up killing you one way or another."

As RIP said, the difference is that my piss-poor eating habits affect ME and ME ONLY. (and I am one of those obese Americans you see running around. Wave hi to the fat guy!) If I smoked, it would affect everyone else around me with secondhand smoke ...

My eating a vat of Popeye's Fried Chicken (where's MINE Justin?!? that sounds good about now) won't affect the stranger sitting next to me at the bus stop. Joe Camel will however.

It will when I can't sit on that same bench because the two of us on the same one will snap it like a twig! LOL Yopu sitting there with your vat of fat fried popeye's and me with my shopping bag full of Burgerville double beef cheeseburgers with extra spread and fries with sides of spread for dunking the fries in!! Ever see a Tri-Met leaning going down the road it's because we are sitting on the same side of the bus....just hope it does not tip over on it's side!!! LOL

Skep I am still ROFLMFAO!!! "For a second I thought NYC banned fat trannies."

I agree that obesisty is indeed a major problem not just in this country but now also world wide.

However if I were a betting man I will predict that in 20 years from now lifestyles and the levels of obesisty in people living in NYC will still be the same as before the changes in the works.

This ban is not only stupid it is also very silly. It is making alot of those within the restaurant industry very very angry. When you consider what will happen to the baking and pastry arts industry it will basically kill that industry.

However on the bright side we may see a turn around in the ways people cook at home again. As in the modern age there is little to no from scratch cooking and baking done at home any longer as it is really a lost art.

Im not sure what crack you're smoking shyguy, but outside of the US most countries are STARVING, not OBESE! The US is nothing but a bunch of Whales, thats right, blubbery WHALES! You ever been to EUROPE?? Their portions at restaurants are half the size as the portions of food served here in the states.
