Bush Accepts Bolton's U.N. Resignation

By TERENCE HUNT (AP White House Correspondent)
December 04, 2006 11:48 AM EST

WASHINGTON - Unable to win Senate confirmation, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will step down when his temporary appointment expires within weeks . . .

. . . Bush gave Bolton the job temporarily in August 2005, while Congress was in recess. . .

The White House resubmitted Bolton's nomination last month. But with Democrats capturing control of the next Congress, his chances of winning confirmation appeared slight. . . "

See boys and girls how much your vote matters. We have effectively crippled the President. The ram-rod approach to governing is no longer an option for Bush.

Why is the UN like Wal-Mart?

If they won't hire you, because YOU SUCK, no one will hire you.

But, hey Bully Bolton, my yard needs weeding!

Then again, so does your mustache!

And with no job, none at all, you'll have plenty of time to work on your personal hygeine!

Not so. He just doesn't fit the appeasement of the enemy agenda of the Democrats and the liberal Senator Chaffe.

Not so. I just don't like him or his style. Not that anyone in power actually asked me my opinion.

But since you see it as such a partisan thing, ok, yeah: He's out. I'm glad.

Give us a break Deane. Bolton is another one of the many failed appointments. If he wasn't a failure, he wouldn't be resigning.

Pure politics.

The votes for Bolton were there.

democrats just cowardly blocked an up or down vote, after putting Mr. Bolton's nomination on hold for over a year.

You guys want to play hardball, go ahead.

Just don't cry when you get gridlock.

That's because you may be able to block some things, but continue like you are, and democrats will get little of their legislation through.

You'll need 2/3 to over-ride Mr. Bush's vetoes.

But come to think of it, your way may be better. More gridlock with this congress is fine with me.

The votes were not there, that's why he resigned.

Gridlock = less votes for the GOP come 2008, so that's fine with me as well. At a minimum, the radical Bush agenda has come to an end as we know it. No more rubber stamps from Congress.

Earth to Eastsideguy.

Lincoln Chaffee is still in Congress until it adjournes.

If you were to watch Fox News, you'd keep up on reality a bit better.

I think Andy best described how Foxnews works:

When catalyzed with money, Bushcronium activates Foxnewsium, an element that radiates orders of magnitude more energy, albeit as incoherent noise, since it has 1/2 as many peons but twice as many morons.

"The votes were not there, that's why he resigned."

Wrong. It was held up in committee. An open vote is precisely what the democrats fought so hard to prevent. Otherwise, why not simply vote up or down on the guy?

Remember the Bolton nomination the next time democrats cry about 'mean-spirited' politics.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16036708/

Bolton’s nomination has languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than a year, blocked by Democrats and several Republicans. Sen. Lincoln Chafee, a moderate Republican who lost in the midterm elections Nov. 7 that swept Democrats to power in both houses of Congress, was adamantly opposed to Bolton.

The White House resubmitted Bolton’s nomination last month. But with Democrats capturing control of the next Congress, his chances of winning confirmation appeared slight. The incoming chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Democratic Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, said he saw “no point in considering Mr. Bolton’s nomination again.”

Like I said, the votes were not there.

Again.

If there's no chance he'd be confirmed, why not simply vote up or down on the guy?

Or were democrats afraid they didn't have the votes?

Is THAT the gridlocked you promised? What? Because we beat you to it, you are angry that you haven't gotten your chance?

Fun.

Not at all. Just don't claim you want kum-bah-yah, then start to complain when gridlock goes the other way.

Once more.

Democrats can block the president's proposals. But he can also block theirs. Gridlock. Bring it on.

Yes. I do. See, I like to think for myself. You make it sound like I have been some kind of huge Kerry supporter. I think you'd be surprised how much I didn't like him. But, you know, all things in your world are black and white. Good luck with that. It works for some. Just not me.

Just like when Bush said " Bring it on " to the insurgency. They brought it on and I thought it was stupid then too. It sounded even more silly then.

I agree that there should have been an up-or-down vote. That said, it was questionable if there were the votes THEN, a few moderate Republicans were siding with the Democrats against Bolton.

Now that it's a Democrat control, there is no way in hell there are the votes.

The left is big on talking about democracy.

But democrats didn't feel that way when Mr. Bush was elected...TWICE.

I suspect Herb will hold on VERY tightly to that victory for Bush. Even wneh things look terrible and we get sick of it and we vote actual change, yes, he won TWICE.

I might say you're reaching pretty far.

The Iraq war is a disaster that was not necessary, and you're idol is responsible for it. That's not something I'd want on my legacy.

I don't blame you though for trying everything possible to deflect the blame. It's got to be disheartening by now to still support a failed president while trying to continue to sell snake oil, espcecially when everyone knows it's snake oil these days.

Same reason the Republicans blocked so many up-and-down votes in the Republican-controlled committees while Clinton was president. Were you whining about it then too? Doubt it! I have no doubt that when the Republicans blocked up and down votes on Clinton's judicial nominees, you were thrilled.

Anyway, as said above, it was a Republican Senator (Chaffee) who blocked Bolton. If all the Republicans on the committee had approved it no Democratic vote on the committee would have mattered.
