I've just recently come to own a bunch of acetates cut by Barney Keep at KEX featuring spots he did as "Keep Time" and "Keep's Corner" from 1953 to 1957. I haven't listened to them yet, I have a few other projects to finish up on with my CD burner before I archive these things. There are also commercials such as Logan Oldsmobile Co and some possible interviews, one reads "Margie Rayburn Versus B. Keep", or they could be break-in novelty "interviews".

How about an aircheck of the show when he played a Rita Coolidge song and commented on the album art where she is lying in bed stroking her cat (Fall Into Spring 1974).

Hee hee. Let your imagination fill in the blanks ...

I remember walking in there looking for work in 1976. They were located next to where the Candlelight Bar is. Met Eric Norburg. He was a total jerk. Later on down the road I met Paul Matthews, the engineer that wore a jump suit every day. Great guy. Looked like Pete Townshend on "Who Came First" but no facial hair and a lot older. Back in the days when everyone in radio had real personalities (not necessarily all good).

Pat Pattee still has a wire recorder he had as a young man, and the off-air wire recordings he made of Barney Keep on KEX and Bob McAnulty among others.

I encouraged Pat to bring the wire recorder into to KWJJ some years ago, so we could immortalize some classic audio...that otherwise will be lost.
Pat is not the biggest fan of digital and CD's...so it never happened.

Offer to copy it from wire to Reel-to-Reel then. He should be cool with that.

I was thinking the same thing!

Or, play the distraction bit. --gotta be something creative that would work.

re: Eric Norberg. I wouldn't call him a jerk, he was a bit nerdy, slept on a cot next to the transmitter at KWIP for years, but he was never a jerk.
I liked working for him, and his "The Parade of Hits" format was fairly successful.

Isn't he a very successful industry consultant? It seems like he's written some books. I always liked him and had no problems.

He runs The Bee, the Sellwood/Brooklyn/Eastmoreland/Woodstock newsrag.

He worked down in Newberg at whatever their station is for some time, and also wrote articles for some publication previous to The Bee. His coverage of the 105.9 proceeding was lackluster, incomplete, misleading and THAT is why I think he is a jerk.

I don't believe there is a station in Newberg. He was the KEX PD about 30 years ago.

I believe Eric was PD at KWIP (Salem/Dallas area)(all the music was on cassettes) and wrote articles for the Gavin Report.

I don't count the station at George Fox in the same way that I don't count the one at the DEQ.

Andy_brown, respectfully, that stuff about still waters running deep and not judging books by their covers applies to Eric Norberg. E.G. is one of the nicest, most genuine, loyal, hard working and, to say the very least, most intelligent man I met in 30 years of radio. Opinionated? Passionate? A mite odd? Sure. But the man has chops. Go talk to him sometime. Take him out for Mexican food. Some people take a little effort to understand. Spicy food is Eric's social lubricant, so to speak. Oh, and he also has a terrific collection of Sony radios!

I echo Bob... Eric gave me the chance to work weekend evenings at KEX for several months... I got to work at a station I grew up with, and plug Sweet Lovable Old Barn, too! (And I heard from more than a few guys I went to school with while working with 50,000 watts at night...What a trip!)

It was a wonder that he could find anything in his office, since it was full of Arbitron and other ratings reports just stacked all around... The guy was simply a wizard at interpreting the numbers, which he did frequently for all the Golden West stations. Anyone that had the chance to utilize him as a mentor was richly rewarded, as Eric was more than willing to share his experience (in the best sense of the word)... Having the chance to work for him turned out to be an important building block in my radio career.

I was thrilled to see he's running The Bee, which serves the neighborhood I grew up in...I learned that Country Bill's restaurant on Woodstock is still goin' strong!

Bob Clarke & Mark Andrews: Ditto!

Eric was one of my Broadcast Instructors at PCC. I remember during class, some peoples eyes would glaze over but I found his indepth lectures fascinating! So much so I took his class over the following semester even though I received an "A". I had a feeling Eric knew so much that he wouldn't cover the same subjects again and I was right.

One day during December 1976 after class, I asked Eric if he had a list of Christmas songs KEX played. He didn't but the next week at class he gave me a long list which filled one page, 56 songs. He had typed up the list just for me and I still have it. I've refered back to it countless times for 30 years now.

I can't remember the reason I visited the old 5th Avenue Studios but as Mark mentioned above, I do remember how amazed I was to see Eric's office. Even the chairs had stuff piled on them! It was a small office and Eric mentioned he couldn't wait to move to the new roomy Golden West Broadcast Center.

It was Eric who first told me about the "FM Atlas & Station Directory" that includes translators. I've now purchased every issue for 30 years and later became a charter subscriber/contributor to it's monthly updated news letter "FMedia!". All because of Eric.

Eric also wrote some very interesting thoughts in the old Gavin Report.
