Whenever I hear a DJ on the radio, I say to myself, is he live or voice tracked? It is hard to tell.

The KINK DJ last midnight said it was 220. That could be a clue he was voice tracked.

Perhaps, he was confusing it with his other job and was actually referring to sandpaper. :-)

Normally tracked jocks don't do time checks that specific. They might do something near the TOH, but that's it.

Maybe he just misread the digital clock! (going for the benefit of the doubt here - after all, it IS the holidays!)

I once heard Mary Pierce give the day, date, month and year. Somehow, she got them all wrong and missed by 18 years! It was all live!

Whenever you listen to the radio, pay close attention to the DJ.

If you think he or she is voice tracked, post a comment on this thread.

Too many DJ's when voice tracking set the cue tone too soon and the spots start playing a split second before he's done talking... dead giveaway for me!

I know the mid day guy Brad is Voice tracked, and I think most of Jeff Thomas's show is voice tracked!

k103- Come on, its Cheap Channel, what do you think Dexter???
Weekends, mid day and evening shift are all voice tracked! And who knows how much longer the afternoon and morning show will be live. I would guess not too much longer.

I didn't know CC owned K103. Thanks for the info.

What about the other stations? 92.3, 94.7, 95.5, 100.3, 105.1, 107.5.

Charlie FM (97.1) should at least have voice-tracked DJs. That would be an improvement over what they have now.

107.5 has a guy named Otto Mation. He seems to be doing every single shift! What a champ he is. 100.3 is a mess, but its cheap channel, would you expect anything less?? Middays, afternoons, and evenings are all voice tracked! How absolutely PATHETIC!!!
What happend to chase?? Did they blow him out too, and replace him with a voicetracker from Out of state???
105.1 is live EXCEPT for Matt Wilcox who Voice tracks his shift weeknights. I also believe that weekends are all Voicetracked on 105.1
Gotta love radio, no longer live, and not always local! The Ipods are sounding better and better.

IF CHARLIE is going to be CHEAP and Voicetrack, Than PLEASE! Just play music, but if they will actually bring some LIVE AND LOCAL talent, than I say bring on the dj's.

Radiodawgs ( hows the new gig, btw?) - you are inncorect. Overnights at KUPL ( Jay Haw, & Boss Hoss) are live, and there is ALWAYS a live body in the KUPL studio, if we're playing a countdown show, or other program. KUPL is live more or less 24/7. John Paul does it the way it's supposed to be done.

I think this is actually the wrong question. Your topic question should instead read "How many stations DON'T use voice tracking?"

If there are any it would be amazing to know.

Which stations DON'T use voice tracking? I really want to know.

KSND has one voice-tracking DJ. She is on weekdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Yep, I know KUPL is live overnights (wasn't aware they were for weekend countdowns & such). Was speaking collectively, sorry for the misunderstanding.

Years ago, when I was doing college radio, we got this guy named Mac in the station. Man, he was a real go-getter! He'd do middays, overnights, you name it!

...Speaking of which, I think that Otto Mation puts in a lot of time at KRRC (97.9) or else, they hire a lot of mute DJs.

They're moot mute DJs. Heh heh....Either that or somebody unplugged the CR mic as a joke and the DJs can't figure out how to plug it back in.

Last night, I discovered another voice tracker: 94-7....FM.......(Dead Air Radio). I was listening just before 10:00 PM Friday. The (voice tracked) DJ said goodbye to her listeners and wished them a good weekend. Then the last song of her show played all the way to the end. What happened afther that? Nothing! There were several minutes of dead air until 10:00 PM, when the legal ID and a block of commercials came on. I guess that there must have been a foul-up in the timing of that show or one of the songs that had been programmed didn't play, and that threw off the timing of the remainder of the show. Obviously, there was nobody in the control room at that time.

Hey Alfredo_t:

I'll tune into Complete Control that starts at 10pm Fridays and frequently commercials will start randomly playing over the music... I noticed the dead air as well before 10pm and figured that automation skipped a song that was supposed to play too...

I was driving on 26 (heading over Sylvan Hill) when the dead air happened. I don't know exactly how long it lasted, but it seemed like an eternity experiencing it while driving!

Seriously, though, I suspect that the only music-formatted stations that wouldn't use voice tracking today would be campus and community stations with volunteer airstaffs. Volunteer is the key word here--the volunteers' time spent in the studio while the music is playing has no monetary value. Probably the right analogy for the use of voice tracking in radio is to the use of robotics to do painting and welding in automotive manufacturing. In other words, the station management sees the automation/voice tracking computer systems as a tool to improve the financial efficiency of their organization. Salaries are expensive; benefits (if offered) are expensive.
