It started to blow at my place about an hour ago, on the Beaverton side just below Sylvan Hill.

It just started getting windy at my place. Will we have another storm like the one in 1962? Who remembers that Columbus Day Storm? I sure do.

Parkrose:

Just starting to get some serious gusts. No power losses yet, but I've got the fireplace and wood stove primed and ready to go.

Kerosene heater at the ready for the long haul.

It's not gonna be too cold this time around, but I've a sick wife... Better safe than sorry!

Make sure you've got some back up batteries in that alarm clock so you don't miss work tommorrow morning if the power does go out.

I've used a cell phone as an alarm for years.

Got rid of the watch and the alarm clocks as well. We get the time from a wall clock, the computer, TV and a few appliances with clocks on them.

I'm out on my front porch right now.

Man, it's blowing pretty huge! Love that sound. You can hear it rush up from down the street, rattling things and moving through the trees!

Central Vancouver, off of 500 and 42nd. I live in the bottom of a cul-de-sac with a hill behind us for protection. I hear it howling out there but a lot of it is passing over our house.

Timberfake - do you ever go to Wong's Garden on 44th and Woodstock, in the Bi-Mart parking lot? We drive all the way there from here at least a couple of times a month ... best Chinese food in the area, bar none and yer right next to it! :-)

Here, the gusts are clearly coming from the west with the occasional gust from the south.

Not too much rain yet. Some, but I can't decide if it's just rain or blowoff from all the trees!

I've only one serious tree within striking range of the house. That was a big worry at my old place. Between the leaves and crap always breaking stuff, I made sure my next pick had a tree that made sense and only one!

It was raining pretty hard driving home from PDX tonight ... it seems to have let up a little bit, but the wind is picking up more.

I talked to a friend who lives in Newport today, he said it was absolutely miserable there.

Oh yeah. The coast almost always gets just hammered from these things.

My wifes parents owned a nice little place in what is now an estuary, north of Lincoln City. Huge wind and rain there several times per year.

Wind gusts here in NE Portland but not insane - yet! No flickering lights; friend I was just on the phone with in N. Portland reports flickering lights, however.

As my web server runs out of my house off of a Qwest DSL line, I'm crossing my fingers that Pacific Power's service and Qwest's circuit both stay up!!! My UPS is good for about 2 hrs I think then that's it. My web server has been running for about 380 continuous days now - don't want to break that streak now!

The 10 O'Clock News on 12 reports a Wind Gust at Cape Blanco at 102 MPH! They said the wind will be on top of US here in Portland around 2am. Lights have flickered at my house also.

A few gusts and flickering lights around 10pm, but not as bad as the descriptions of Portland/Vancouver.

Eugene didn't get much of the heavy rains of a week ago, either.

Skep, good thing you kept that old Smith-Corona portable in the metal suitcase.

The Weather Channel and NOAA websites say heaviest winds developing around 10pm, warnings and advisories in effect until 4am. Probably not a repeat of 1962.

KGW said this is the same day in 1981 that hit hard in the Willamette Valley with another Big Wind Storm. I sure remember that night. KWIP was doing continues coverage with Eric Norberg and in the field was a young Scott Tom reporting downed tree and such. It was radio at it's best!

There was another one of these about 93. Saw a traffic light get blown off it's fixture. Funny how big those things really are. Once it was on the ground, everybody just sat there in their cars for a while looking at it.

Reporting from the boondocks in rural Sheridan here. We had 3 trees come down (creek alders, which were growing along Rock Creek, which flows through our property).

The phone lines went dead just after midnight and were restored about 10:30 this morning. Power remained uninterrupted, however.

so, we're getting a pretty good whipping right now (Weds 5PM), based on the leaves collecting in the corner by my garage door (due to a vortex effect), I'd say its nastier than the one on Sunday. But this might be limited to my area only. we'll have a live report at 11. :-)

Wayne: I believe we are in El Nino. Which I've watched over the years. We will get all the coldest & worst weather in November & December. Then it will get warmer in January & February and dry out. Look for a drought by Spring and no watering your lawn by Summer.

All sorts of flights delayed, in and out of PDX tonight. The Southwest guys told me that they had several people yak on the planes coming into Portland, and they diverted six flights to Seattle, Spokane and Boise short-term until it blew through.

That didn't happen the other night at all.

Our neighbors in Rockaway called and there was a gust at 101MPH. Don't know if that is accurate but we are going down this weekend to check the place and see if there is any structure damage...

At this rate we'll all be back in the stone age in about a week!
