Wow....

I'm actually gonna miss the old plain text forum.

This is nice though. Quick edits! Well, the greeting page says an upgrade is in progress, so that's it for me.

Let Dan do his thing...

Doug-
Just like the Republicans you're gonna have to get used to the changes. But like them too, you will manage.

I think this format is more in line with what I have seen on other message boards and chat rooms.

ps: one significant advantage is know who the last poster is before you click on the topic -- it'll be soooo much easier for SOME FOLKS ( :-) ) to ignore, ahem, lets call them "chronic time wasters"!

You're right KSKD, quick edits.

I wonder if we're gonna be able to add little avatars . . . hmm?

Hey, it's got direct post links that are a lot easier than the old board.

I won't go there. :-)

There has always been an edit function, but it's a lot easier to find now.

To the far right of the white box where your screen name is there are 4 icons. The lower right one is to "Edit This Post." When you put your cursor over it a little box appears telling what the function is.

Apparently there is still a time limit. I tried editing something old in the history section and it wouldn't let me.

That's a good thing, IMHO.

Time enough to reconsider gaffes, but not so long as to distort expression. Gotta live by your words.

"I can edit this post after I post it? I always notice my mistakes after its too late."

If you took the time to proofread messages BEFORE hitting post, you would have a lot less errors.

That's right. You have 180 minutes to edit after posting.

Is it just me, or do the alternating colors in here seem a little confusing?

Yeah, Dan, I find the colors a bit confusing. In fact, I find the basic look harder to read than the old format. The author being in small fonts somehow makes it hard to parse.

I'm waiting for everyone to trash the site before they give it some time(like everything else).Let's give it a little time to get used to.I don't like change like most people but I think it is a nice look.Someone has to step out and try new things.Good job Dan.

Dan, I don't know if it's the colors that are confusing, or the fact that the author and the message are in different colors. It appears that doing something to bring the two together might be helpful and would cut down a bit on the cluttered look.

Dan, it's your forum, obviously...but can I suggest something a little different? Here's a mock-up:

http://www.bizave.com/pdxradio_test.html

I find having the author/date cell in white very disorienting to my eye (reading it almost gives me a headache) and prefer the message text to be white while the author/date cell is colored. And I find having the author in small font size difficult to read, also. Just my opinion - thanks for keeping this forum rolling!

I don't think the alternate colors are confusing, it's the large amount of white space, as Andrew is pointing out. If there was a way to have the name and post info in a small box to the SIDE of the post instead of a large box on the TOP of the post, I think it'd feel more intuitive.

I think part of the battle is simply getting used to a change.

The large white boxes for the author and date are a little confusing though.

The other changes are an improvement, and I salute Dan for his work in keeping the site up to date.

Now if something could be done about the spell check...

What I sometimes do is cut and paste a long post into Gmail as a new message, check it, fix errors, then paste it back.

I think it would be nice if the poster's info and the text were all the same color. The new format is a bit hard on the eyes and not as fluent as the previous format. But, like anything new, it takes some time to get used to.

Thanks for all the thoughts. More changes are on the horizon.

A quick solution for spell checking: the new 2.0 version of Mozilla Firefox incorporates it right in. Misspelled words are underlined in red just like MS Word (and Gmail?). Then you can easily (right) click the errant word and select the correction.

I think the author bar is too thick. If the icons at right were lined up, the bar would be half the size.

I like the alternating colors. I like the plain old white better, but it's getting dated.

If we are gonna alternate colors, make the author bar the same hue as it's message is, but make it brighter or darker. That way, the posts are differentiated, but we don't have the distraction of the high contrast white author bar.

Don't mind the author bar being a smaller font. The posts are afterall where the value is. Makes sense to be smaller to me.

Would be nice to have this little post box be wider though. Maybe make it 80 characters?

Love the quick edit.

Might choose to hide the Administration button from view.

Also really appreciate the minimal graphics overall. Once, when loading the old page, I saw a bunch of pretty serious icons. I vote to keep graphics clean and functional and rare.

Just thought of something else...

If we are gonna have an author bar, or side box, let's include the funny ranks we get as we continue to post.

If we do a box, I still say keep the hue the same, alternate however you want, but differentiate post from author meta data with intensity only.

Dan buddy, don't really get the alternate shades...but do like the immediate poster info when you log on. It is a more 21st century look, and that is nice. (Dan, did you hear Vince L. is out in Seattle?...he was always a "West" inspiration in the formulative years!) Hopefully he will latch on somewhere else.

Nah, just put an avatar of a Corvair for the "Greens", in support of Ralph Nader.

Re: Corvairs. You know, while not beauties, they were not bad looking vehicles. My Mom drove one for a couple years (and she and I are are still alive!

The timing was difficult for the Corvair. Ralph Nader was just beginning his assault on "dangerous" american autos, and Corvair was an easy target. (Heck, I don't think it even had seatbelts!).

However, some will argue that the Ford Mustang was a reaction to the Corvair (a much more successful reaction!), and changed auto history forever.

As I recall, the big criticism of Corvairs was the overall handling, but my Mom drove so cautiously, it didn't matter to us. (Thanks, Mom!)

Funny how the mind works: the new format (and it's colors) drove me nuts for a day or two, but now it's no problem... Once you deal with it for a while, it becomes just fine, right?

I vote to keep it. I'm sure some of the non-obvious inner workings are a definite upgrade, and the colors will settle-in just fine.
