DD got substantial college radio airplay of his 1990's releases. Those CDs didn't really hit the mainstream, but he did pick up some younger fans.

I have had the pleasure of touring with Dicky twice- first when I was 19, and then for 8 months last year.. he is hands down the most bad ass guitar player out there- period!

and he is still "The King of the Surf Guitar" although he can thank Tarantino for resurrecting a not so big hit for him in Pulp Fiction.
I personally prefer Lets go trippin to miserlou.

ACTUALLY dodger, Miserlou was a huge hit. Back in those days, hits on t he west coast didn't always go national- Miserlou did. Dick was even on the Ed SUllivan show..

Obviously, Toecheese has no idea who he's talkin' 'bout.

Talk about R&R HoF nominees, he deserves it more than some of the others!

Oh yeah, dicky got paid. BUT he got NO mention from the Black eyed peas.- PISSED me off! In the rap community, I always find it hilarious that a video on MTV is listed as:

jay z, feat. T-Dawg, Feat. S-amonella, Feat XXX$, Feat. .. ( you get the idea)

menaing they'll give credit to EVRYONE and everyone appearing on the song, BUT WON'T GIVE CREDIT TO THE ARITST THEY'RE SAMPLING!

It should havebeen lsited as this:

Blackeyed Peas, Feat. Dick Dale
Pump it

So I grabbed my Whitburn, and looked under Dick, under Dale, under Deltones.... and I couldn't find a single song that ever reached the Top 40.

So exactly how do you guys define a hit?

Oh jeez, how many "hits" did Led Zepplin have? Less than Mr. Mr., I'm sure.

"Hit songs" are roughly equivalent to grades in elementary school, as far as I'm concerned. In the grand scheme, they don't mean anything.

" Surfers choice"

1963 Pop Albums No. 59

1962 "Let's Go Trippin'" Pop Singles No. 60

Dick was on Capitol records the Same time as the Beatles. I personally think his best work is on " Calling up Spirits" and " tribal thunder", released in the early 90's.

UnGodamn believable. Those two albums changed my life.

Go get those two!

Yes-Semoochie- thank you for pointing that out! As a regular viewer of the LW show (it's good to drink beer to!), I alwwyas Chucke when Lawrence introduces " Dick Dale"..

Here's a funny story:

This was down in central CA. I was outside, when an old couple ( in their 80's ) came up and asked me if Dick Dale ( thinking it was the LW dick dale) was REALLY playing. and I said yes. It didn't dawn on me that they thought it was DD from LW. So they went and bought tickets. I saw them when Dick went on stage. Their mouths dropped! their ears were covered!

it's a classic Dick story..

I saw Dick Dale at the Crystal a couple of years ago. It was all ages, we were in the "drinking" section of course, but close. He's amazing. And, really, really, loud. And funny. And plays trumpet also, and I bet a few other instruments, right Tim?

He was huge in Southern California and that was about it.
Dick Dale had 2 different records in the top 5
of both KFWB and KRLA on Jan 1 1963.
"Miserlou" was #1 on both and "Peppermint Man" was # 5. The flip side of "Peppermint Man" was
"Surf Beat" and charted on KRLA that same week.
The #1 Album in L.A. for several months was
"Surfer's Choice"

The Pulp Fiction Soundtrack is one of the best Soundtracks EVER. It revitalized a lot of great songs and artists that have been forgotten about.Plus Urge Overkill's Remake of Neil Diamond's "girl you'll be a woman soon" is a million times better than the original!!
With Every Quentin Tarantino movie that comes out, You can always bet that a "killer" soundtrack will come along with it.
