In trying to scare voters about potential tax increases if Democrats win back the House and the Senate on Tuesday, they warn that Democrats want to bring back the "pay-go" rules the Congress used to have. From the New York Times:

http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&ct=:ePkh8BM9E0KzgxVohwELPlsAkqAG2g/2-1&fp=4 54e0e0a399e39fe&ei=NHdORcnhOouOwQHX5OjhDQ&url=http%3A//www.nytimes.com/2006/11/0 4/us/politics/04agenda.html%3Fref%3Dus&cid=1110890782

Republican House leader says, "they want to institute pay-go rules. If you put the pay-go rules in and you increase spending, the only answer is raise taxes.”

In other words, instead of raising new revenue to pay for increased spending, Republicans simply want to BORROW it and pay the interest later (actually, our kids and grandkids will pay the interest). Wow, the Republicans sure have come a long way from the 1994 Contract for America's pledge for a balanced budget amendment!!!

At least the Republicans in power are now being honest about not caring about fiscal responsibility. Only Democrats and some fringe "old school" Republicans seem to care about it anymore. What's wrong with PAYING for any increased spending you wish to do? That doesn't mean automatically raising taxes, by the way - it could also mean spending cuts or saving money by, for example, changing the law to allow Medicare to negotiate with the drug companies for cheaper drug prices, the way the Veterans Administration does.

According to the GOP, deficits don't matter.

Rather than selling US Treasuries to fund the war, I say add in a war tax, then we'll see who continues to support the effort.

Totally!

That would be an effective check and balance for sure. Similar to Hilary's tie congressional compensation increases to minimum wage increases.

Yeah, Tax On War! We'll see the trickle down theory reverse itself and see an uphill landslide ending the war pronto!
