Just did my duty today. Read magazines from 9am to 2:15pm before they called us in for the late grilling. Had skipped lunch, didn't want to leave because I had not brought a real good rain coat, plus it was 25 minutes in the rain this morning at 8am waiting to get threw the metal detector into the dry building. I was soaked!

In the end, they didn't want "media boy" for the their Jury. I'm sure this was the only catch. I was very pleasant and said nothing derogatory as others did to try and get out of the situation.

I'm sure You could top this story many times over, so let's hear it!

Craig- I have been asked twice to be on jury duty. But since I'm self-employed it's considered a hardship.

So I have no stories. However my wife, who was 8 months pregnant, attempted to do jury duty but was so tired she feel asleep in the large walk in closet. The person in charge told my wife..."Oh sweetie you go home, we don't need you that bad."

That's all I got.

Chris: That's pretty funny! Maybe they were afraid the closet might become a temporary nursery!

I was on Grand Jury Duty for a month and did drug cases. It was most interesting.

I got picked for a really cool case about a botched lypo. She was suing the yellow pages. Long story...but I didn't get "picked" for that case. They didn't want anyone in the media for that one.

But they did choose me to sit on the jury of a civil property case. I know all sorts of useless information about slag. And roofing on industrial buildings. yay. What really sucked was the fact that after sitting there doodling for 2 weeks, on the last day I got chosen as the alternate. I took my free big town hero sandwich and skipped off home....

Three times I got called for Jury Duty in Yamhill county. Three times I got dismissed because I live in Clackamas county. Heh.

I served on a jury for a DUII case. It took all day. Basically, the lady got pulled over because she was swerving. She failed several roadside sobriety tests. They then gave her the Breathalyzer, and she tried to trick it by not blowing hard enough. First time she blew, it said .16, but because she didn't blow hard enough, the machine said it was an "insufficient reading". So they did it again, same result, .16, and insufficient reading. So at the trial, she claimed she never drank that night, not one drop. Then the prosecutor brought in someone from the company that manufactures the Breathalyzer machine, and he said that even if it's an "insufficient reading" it's still accurate. So, even if you try to trick it by not blowing hard enough, the reading is still correct. It was obvious to me she was guilty, as with most other jurors, however, we had one old timer who just didn't believe the machine! In the face of all the evidence, he couldn't buy the fact that the reading was still accurate, even though it was "insufficient." He finally broke down and we convicted her. I felt bad for her, because I'm certain she was going to be beaten by her husband when she got home. The jury actually discussed this potential during our activities. It was a long day, but quite interesting. I felt 100% certain justice was served though.

My case today would have been DWI. They asked me if I talk about traffic conditions on the radio. Well who doesn't!

We did have a few meth cases. What we did was we had to determine what was a felonie or not. If I remember the limit for felonie possesion was 4 ounces or more. Our attourney said that drugs were responsible for 90 percent of the crimes we have.It amazes me that there are people who want to make drugs legal. I bet you aren't used to getting up in the morning.

Wayne: You are SO Right! Would you believe I stay up so late, I had to get up when I go to bed! It was a real turn around for me. I'm still up and I only had 4 hours of sleep last night! Plus with the Jury Duty & a Jock Meeting today, I didn't eat a thing for 21 hours!

craig, I got one thing to say: VooDoo Doughnuts on SW 3rd and Burnside -- no better place for the late night quick feed. Play "American Pie" and you'll have enough time to get there and back!

During my years as a 9-1-1 dispatcher, I was called for jury duty 3 times. Of course, neither the defense nor the prosecution wanted anyone from law enforcement on the jury, but the charade of waiting, questioning, selecting and more waiting still had to be played-out.

I can understand why they wouldn't want me, but could never understand why the silly 2-day "waiting game" had to run it's course.

I went throught the same experience when I was called on jury duty again. It was only for one day. But I was working the 3:30 to midnight shift and had to get up early the next day. Fortunately there was a Starbucks near where the courthouse is on 4th and Taylor. My niece happens to be the manager there and I got free coffee. Lord knows I needed it! You are probably used to working late hours.
