Every Portland FM is now streaming online with fairly decent processing, but why do so many other large markets have major online processing issues?

I have a card I plug into my laptop, that lets me get broadband speed from about anywhere (Verizon). It wouldnt be hard for them to incorporate that technology into a handheld device, and be programed to only play streaming audio.

That could seriously compete with the satellite services.

The easy answer is that the Portland area has a higher per capita percentage of computer geeks, which translates into better web sites and links. We also have more DSL and Broadband available than most other major metro areas. And, of course, once one station has it, all the rest have to have it too!

"processing issues?"

You can't process audio the same for broadcast and internet streaming. Stations that realize this and invest in additional equipment for their stream and don't cut corners will sound just fine. Those that don't, won't.

What I want to know is that many stations dropped their streaming when the DMCA passed in '98 because of the rules and costs above and beyond the broadcast rules and royalties. Now they are back streaming ... is this because of the new software products to manage the omission of ads in the stream ... what about the playlist limitations for on line streaming? Are they now programming their radio feeds to be DMCA compliant as well?

Andy,

Yes, there is now reasonable technology to "cover" ads when needed. Streaming appears to be back.

>>Are they now programming their radio feeds to be DMCA compliant as well?<<

It's not so much of programming for DMCA compliance as it is paying for it. Get the full explanation at http://www.copyright.gov/carp/.

Ad insertion technology has been around for nearly seven years now - so that never was an issue with streaming. It always was all about the royalty fees.

Streaming is back in the large markets, but most small market stations still haven't returned to the internet.

I saw on tv, that Howard Stern is going to be streamed, for free.

Not that I have ever, or want to listen to him.
