This is a very sad state of radio, especially for Z100. Im confused of how a staion that makes tons of money can't even afford to get a live airstaff. Salmonella is correct, that is really pathetic.

Cutting staff on money making stations to carry non-money making ones perhaps?

THIS IS A GREAT IDEA! In fact I think that there should be a law that every station should be required to carry one live segment then they can VT or simulcast the other 20 hours I hope these companies wise up and start broadcasting from a centralized location to REALLY control those costs....

Now from the Clear Channel studios in Houston...
This is Coast to coast COUNTRY broadcasting on 287 stations 24 hours per day..........

CBS RADIO PRESENTS.... the NATIONAL Classic Rock Show...classic rock 24/7 from our studio in New York...................

and on and on....

Sounds like a solid "BIG RADIO" plan to me.

Then once in place, they can VT those too!

Keep a local sales office, and in some markets keep a local news person too!

Know I completely understand why they are called "Cheap channel". If Z100 is hurting now, just wait tell" Movin" eats them for breakfast. NOW is not the time for Z100 to be "cheap" especially with some MAJOR competition coming at them!

I talked to Kobe Austin about two weeks ago, Z should have taken better care of him,Kobe said he quit, but that was the beginning it seems of what; 3 jocks that have been let go now within 6 months, I'm amazed Buckhead is still here, I figured he would say screw Portland bye now, but if you make good bank & have a contract Hell, Portland's a beautiful town, but getting some great talent off the air, and shipping in vt. will save cc a buc or two, the listener's probably can't tell, but radio people that know the inside can tell when a station has something really good going, but it seems now there gonna be on the fence, z can't afford to be making these moves, way too much competition; as it seems we now have 4 chr's in the mkt. I'll bet there moving there studio's, that's always a good reason to get rid of your true talent.
sorry, I just had to vent, back to you!

I don't even listen to 1260 because 90% of it is voice tracked.

Z100 is a revolving door for air talent. They never stay long, and a lot of them are forgetable. Back in the day, jocks stayed at that station 7-8 years, and people still remember a lot of the original jocks that made that station GREAT! Great talent makes a station GREAT! Ask anybody who grew up in the 80's and 90's if they know who Tony Martinez is, or if they know who Val Ring was and I guarentee you a majority will know exactly who they were. So You can say all you want that Jocks are not a huge part of radio, BUT really they are. Z100 back in the day WAS HUGE, all across the country. THE AIR TALENT was the reason why it was so huge, they had great personalities that people LOVED!
Im so happy I was a kid in the late 80's and Early 90's when Z100 was truely a great station. It's people like Tony Martinez, Val Ring, John Murphy,
Stacey Lynn, Dk Erickson, Nelson, Dr, Doug. I'll remember alot of these people tell that day that I die. They were all alot of fun to listen to on the radio.

You can't compare Z100 today VS 7-8 years ago because the station today sounds like a complete shit hole. Its not a creative outlet for people to put on the best possible radio for the public. They have to save every single penny, which means destroying the integrity of the station by putting on a half assed product. Z100 is unlistenable.
Most of those people you listed abouve, Timberfake, will be out of radio soon because they have realized what an absolute joke this industry has turned into.

Salmonella-

All the names listed above are still in radio or some kind of broadcast medium. Like me they love it too much just to junk it. Those of us who have a few years under out belts know how to ride out the changes and format changes and everything else.

Sometimes this business can be really really good to you and other times it sucks. If you love it you find a way to stay in it. No Joke!

Kobe Austin wasn't all that good...but at least he was live. These days, Chase is the best example of talent on Z100. Maybe he can be upgraded to afternoons?

The main reason I don't often listen to Z100: The +3% pitched up music, which makes the station sound absolutely ridiculous!

Try pulling a voice tracked shift because they have no money to hire more than 2 dj's on Z100! That station is pathetic. Smaller market radio stations put on better radio than Z100. That station is prime example of how this industry is DYING!

I remember Z100 has a destination place to work. People would really bust their humps to get a job there. I did weekends for Ken Benson for just over a year at Z100 back in the mid 90's, some of the most fun I ever had in radio. Z100 is a pathetic shell of what it once was.

It's so bad, they should change the name. It disrespects all the great talent that Justin T-fake mentioned that worked at the station for so many years when it was successful. Truly pathetic. How about VT100? It makes more sense.

It makes me really sad in a way because I grew up with Z100 when it Was THE STATION IN PORTLAND! It had a power house of live talent. I still have old tapes I recorded off Z100 back in the mid 90's and i think to myself, What the hell went wrong with this station? It used to sound so good know it is completely unlistenable. It seems like today anybody can get a job on Z100,talent is not valued like it used to be. There was once a time when dj's were actually a HUGE part of that station. I remember as a kid going to the opening of NIKE town when the store first opened back in 1992. Jerome Kersey of the Trailblazers was there signing autographs. Z100's Tony Martinez and Val Ring were also there. Truth be told, more people were interested in meeting Tony Martinez and Val Ring then they were meeting Jerome Kersey. ( I kid you not) They were like stars, people loved them.
When people say this industry is dying, I totally agree. Radio has lost all of its magic that it once had. You can be optimistic and and say Roll with the changes, but as years go by, fewer and fewer jobs are available, Not a good thing.

True. Thus the end of radio as we know it. I sharpened skills and learned the ropes in Longview at KLYK and KITI in Chehalis, I didn't do it at Z100 in Portland. Lisa Carr and I had a long talk about 10 years ago with all the part-time people at Q105/K103 who thought they were actually "paying their dues" working in Portland. Are you kidding. You pay your dues working in John Day, Bend, and Klamath Falls, not Portland or Eugene or Seattle. You certainly don't do it at Z100.

One of the best talents in America, Lara Scott paid her dues in Bend. Her first gig wasn't at Star in Los Angeles. Sometimes, real radio isn't in the big cities, it's in Chehalis/Centralia, Yakima, Redding, and yes.....even Newport! HA!

I just can't believe that Z100 has now Voice tracked two of the most important dayparts back to back.
That station truely is garbage, absolutely absurd.
Im assuming this is just temporary, but who knows, Cheap channel continues to destroy great radio stations. I feel so bad for all the kids who want to get into radio and actually think that radio has a future because it DOES NOT! Each year stations are sounding worse and worse. This is another blow to an industry that is already on life support.

It can only go on for so long.

We are nearing the point where costs cannot be cut too much farther.

The cycle of cutting costs to cut listeners to devalue paid airtime will eventually reach some low point where it's just gonna sit until somebody is allowed to actually innovate again.

Coupla things keep me optimistic about radio:

-it's portrayal in movies is still largely in line with the people powered radio vision shared by many here

(Kind of like the old school telephone ring living on despite almost no phones ringing that way.)

-there are a lot of radios

-it's free

-it's dead simple

-it's robust compared to other tech.

These things are not going to change anytime soon, leaving radio with us for a while yet.

I'm actually hoping we will see a culling of stations, particularly on AM. If this actually happens, the remaining spectrum can be put to some better uses and have more value per dial choice.

This kind of thinking is happening all over the country, in the biggest markets and at the largest stations.

Yesterdays All Access: abc Classic Rocker KLOS/Los Angeles eliminates 6pm to 10pm weeknight slot 'host' due to budgets cuts. This change is effective immediately and all other dayparts are expanded to accommodate the change. 5-10am, 10-3pm, 3-7pm, 8-1am, (1-5am jockless).

Buns: I thought I was crazy, and the jury is still out, but yes "Rizza" is doing some part time work, I am nuts, but is really was her that I heard, kinda strange.

The jocks are not the only ones losing their jobs, cc has also let go some office people as well, only one that I can confirm, but why the jocks first... oh wait, to pay the contracted buckhead show..... that's right.

Back in the great Z100 days when Sean Lynch was PD, I was at KEX. One Friday afternoon, I was shooting the breeze with Sean in his office when Chet Buchanan came in to tell Sean that he couldn't find anyone to fill in on that night's all night shift.

They asked me if I wanted to do it. I didn't think they were serious because I had never done CHR. They were serious, but I still turned them down. C'mon, this was Z100, the #1 station in town. I couldn't pull off a shift!!! Sean & Chet said that I could go in and have fun for six hours. Then, I got to thinking....there were countless people that would do ANYTHING just to have the chance to do one airshift on Z100. Here I was, being pretty much being begged to fill in and I was saying "no." That was when I thought, "what the heck" and did the shift.

It was a blast. I tried to sound CHR, but I had to have been the most A/C sounding jock in Z100 history.

BTW, the Stevie Nicks Destiny's Child collaboration is from 2001,
hardly new news. Apparently, Stevie's song was going to be used regardless of her involvement.

ummmm Andy, this kind of music sampling has been happening for DECADES!!! Brain Wilson admits to ripping off Chubby Checker music, and Led Zeppelin ripped off music from Stevie Wonder. Although I do agree it has gotten a lot worse over the last decade. Most of the music today is mindless garbage, and now it has its own station, it's called MOVIN!
