Satellite radio is the perfect place for a horrendous format like that. No commercials, no djs, hell, they don't even need to stop between songs, just mix them together.

It's a Class A and probably just doesn't reach that many people very well. They have a construction permit to increase height from a new location in San Francisco. That may help or they could be broadcasting from there already and the lower power of the new site is why they didn't show up in the ratings.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KNGY: "On July 17, 2005, KNGY moved its signal from its old tower on Russian Hill to the Sutro Tower, improving coverage in the South Bay, but later changed back to their old site due to signal issues. The effect is clear to South Bay listeners, who recieve a split signal between KNGY and KTOM, a country-format station from the Santa Cruz area" So it appears they tried the new site and went back to the old one. Maybe more of their numbers came from the South Bay and that's why they didn't show in the book. As to the point of the original post: Current Dance simply isn't mass-appeal. That's why it's not a popular radio format except in a very limited number of areas. And Portland isn't one of them.

Isn't the south bay inundated by the Super B on 92.3? I would think their best chance is to maximize coverage in the west and east bays!

They do show but it's always between, .5 and 1.0. >> their best chance is to maximize coverage in the west and east bays! Exactly, that's why they went back to the old set-up with higher ERP and lower height which gave them better building penetration in the immediate area. The South Bay gain with increased height wasn't nearly enough to offset losses due to decreased signal strength. Either way they are far from having full-market coverage. If they could pick up the class A in Livermore they'd have most of it covered. Or better yet if Mapleton Communications could buy both to simulcast KPIG on. (KPIG is currently simulcast in SF on 1510 AM -- underpowered days and flea-powered nights.)

Top 40 WZNR Flips To WNRJ 'Energy 106-1' As first tipped on ALL ACCESS (NET NEWS 9/20), SINCLAIR Top 40 WZNR (ZONE 106.1)/NORFOLK has spun the format wheel, and it's landed on a Rhythmic Hot AC format called "ENERGY 106-1 Music That Makes You Move," with new calls, WNRJ, as of noon ET. The new site is www.energy1061.com. A description of the music would be '70s, '80s, '90s And Today's Upbeat Pop/Dance Hits, including current-based artists like JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, SHAKIRA, BEP, RIHANNA, PUSSYCAT DOLLS and more. ENERGY 106-1 PD JAY MICHAELS told ALL ACCESS, "I am excited about this format as I think it's a winner and it's a unique sound and will serve a great 18-49 female audience. We are going to go jockless for the time being, but with the new format PK's Morning Playhouse, which is syndicated to us, and new night personality DIAZ are both leaving. Reach DIAZ at (321) 394-1657. He's amazing and should have no trouble picking up a new gig."

The stream of the new "Energy 106.1" sounds like a "Movin'" urban based format with a little rap, while SF's "Energy 92.7" is techno-dance intensive and doesn't play rap.

At 10a, CBS Classic Hits KFRC/SAN FRANCISCO became the latest station to flip to the Rhythmic AC format as "THE NEW MOViN 99.7." KCBS & KFRC VP/Programming MIKE PRESTON will serve as PD of THE NEW MOViN 99.7, overseeing the launch and development of the station. Custom television spots are set to help launch the station highlighting the MOViN 99.7 "Makes You Feel Good" branding. CBS/SAN FRANCISCO SVP & Market Manager DOUG HARVILL remarked, "The MOViN format has exploded in popularity in markets such as LOS ANGELES, and has become an instant favorite in SEATTLE, achieving top-rated status among women 18-44 in only six weeks on the air. There is great demand among the BAY AREA's diverse population for the MOViN blend of music and we look forward to making the most of this rare opportunity to launch an entirely new and different musical presentation." There are airstaff changes associated with the flip. So far, ALL ACCESS has confirmed that afternoon driver JOJO KINCAID is out, and available immediately. Reach him at (415) 290-0246 or jojocookin@yahoo.com. Those who think Portland couldn't support a station like this need to start thinkin outside the rock box...

My take is that if portland could have supported a Dance Format, they would have done so around 1995 through early 2000's ( Oughts? Is that what I heard we're calling these years? The Oughts? ). Anyway, I think that was the last/strongest time for Portland dance clubs that would have been there as infrastructure to help a radio format like that. Now, most, not all but most, of the clubs play a slight variation of what is already on the radio.

KNGY doesn't have a full market signal. If you poll the zips in SF County where the signal is the strongest you'll find they're #1 in 25-44 (I believe that was the demo). Dance can work in any city, I just needs time to grow and educate it's audience.

>>The second incarnation of WKTU started out well in New York!<< That was over 10 years ago. As with any contemporary format - things were a LOT different back then than they are today. These days 'KTU is a shadow of its former self - playing more classic dance than current. It's one of the two stations in NY expected to go "Movin'" (the other being WNEW-FM).

Timberfake, while I wasn't thinking of those bands ( I was a club jock during that era - and I refused to play Barbie Girl ) you do note the more popular songs of that year, I guess. But it was also an era of remixes and such that were getting more exposure at dance clubs. The clubs would use those songs and springboard you into songs and beats you'd never hear on radio. And that seemed like the days of a missed chance for a radio format to supplement what was not on radio. And my take is that it would have been a worthy experiment in partnershot. Radio and clubs. But now, it's a lot of radio taking the " lead " when it comes to breaking a song. Clubs in Portland follow right now. Not lead. Maybe things will swing back closer to clubs being the ground at which songs get " blown up." You know? I don't. And what makes people dance these days has changed quite a bit since then too. It's MUCH more Rap-centric. And that is caused by all sorts of cultural reasons. Me being 38 years old now, admittedly, by definition, takes me out of the club loop. So my take may not be nearly as accurate as I like to think it is. But what I DO see/hear are mash-ups and remixes of alternative rock songs that have given any potential dance scene, in clubs, a slight edge over rap dance clubs. Or maybe a more accurate way to put it is that I HOPE the momentum being built on that kind of dance music will bleed over to a club that can use it to take the lead again when it comes to breaking a new sound. But right now, it's radio that has the lead. And it's working for them. If clubs ever regain some power, in Portland, I would not be surprised to see a radio station follow suit. And then the culture will change again and we'll all be doing live remotes from Polka Clubs. Dare to dream.

Who plays techno? Commercial Dance is only a niche formate in the US because it is never given the exposure to grow. I know we're not on FM but we've been playing commercial dance at www.energy981.com for 3+ years now and are one of the most respected internet dance stations around. (and we DON'T play techno)

Don't forget C&C Music Factory. Back in '91 you could not go to any club in the country without hearing "EVERYBODY DANCE KNOW" So many greats off that album including "here we go, lets rock N Roll", and "things that make you go hmmmmm". Good stuff! They had an incredible lead female singer on C&C Music Factory, So beautiful, Its too bad she just lip synced the vocals and some fat chick actually sang on the album. There was some controversy over Martha Wash, Didn't she sue C&C for not getting credited for singing on the album?? I remember C&C music factory won a grammy for that album and They had a crazy acceptance speech. I remember The lead Rapper Clivitz Or Cole Got up and said that The Rumor is False that Zelma Davis Can't sing, she Really Can!" Its funny that they didn't get there grammy taken away from them like Milli Vanilli did, because truth be told, Martha Wash sang all the vocals on the album.

Its true. Take Nancy Wilson Of Heart. Beautiful Voice, a little on the chunky side. If you look at most of Hearts Videos in the 80's, Nancy is NOWHERE to be seen in the video's. Instead you see a very thin Anne wilson up front, which is odd because Nancy was always the voice of Heart. This industry is based on looks, not on talent. Quite sad i must say.

Black Box-Some tracks were voiced by Martha, some where sampled from Loleatta Halloway(listen to "Ride On Time" and "Love Sensation" (all lip synched by model Katrine) Corona-Was actually two different singers. "Rhythm of the night" was Jenny B. Bersola, also the voice of JK (Lipsynched on stage by modeln Marta), PLayahitty, and more. The other singles where sung a second singer Sandy Chambers, but lipsynched on stage by model Olga. Technotronic-"Pump up the jam" was lipsynched by Felly (a model) but actually sung by Ya Kid K (of "Spin that Wheel" fame) she later recieved credit for singing the tracks. La Bouche- Melanie was also the vocals on Le Click's "Tonight is the night." The singer on the rest of Le Clicks tracks (Kayo) replaced Melanie as the lead singer for La Bouche. Oh for Pete sakes Sal. havent you ever listened to the lyrics in the song? I guess I will break it downn for you then. "All I wanna do is make love to you" Is actually a very dirty song, most people don't realize that. The song Is about Nancy Wilson picking up a Hooker on a rainy night at the side of the street and making love to him. As she starts to make love to him she says "Please please understand, Im in love with another man". And out he goes, back on the street again. Thats actually what the song is about, no joke! Ann has the most beautiful voice in Rock! I have yet to hear anyone come close to Ann Wilson. It's too bad Heart got stuck in the Power ballads Zanre (SP) during the 80's, although I thought "brigade" was an excellent album. The single "I didn't want to need you" off that album is one of the best powerballads ever recorded. That song gives me the goose bumps every time I hear it, Ann's voice is stellar in that song. Seems pretty self-explainatory to me... Was a rainy night, when he came into sight, standing by the road, no umbrella, no coat, so I pulled up along side, and I offered him a ride, he accepted with a smile, so we drove for a while. I didn't ask him his name, this lonely boy in rain, fate tell me it's right, is it love at first sight? Please don't make it wrong, just stay for the night. Chorus All I wanna do is make love to you, say you will, you want me too, all I wanna do is make love to you, and your loving arms to hold onto. So we found this hotel, it was a place, I knew well. We made magic that night, oh he did everything right. He brought the woman out of me, so many times, easily. And in the morning when he woke, all I left him was a note, I told him I am the flower, you are the seed, we walked in the garden, we planted a tree. Don't try to find me, please don't you dare, just live in my memory, you'll always be there. Chorus We made love, love like strangers, all night long, we made love. Then it happened one day, He came 'round the same way. You can imagine his surprise, when he saw his own eyes. I said please, please understand, I'm in love with another man, and what he couldn't give me, was the one little thing that you can.

>>Your prayers have been answered by the nice people at CBS radio. << Sort of. Movin' is not a pure "dance radio" format. It's uptempo rhythmic AC. You wont hear any house, trance or techno on 107.5.

"you wont hear any house, trance or techno on 107.5." So Technotronic is not techno? What about Coronna "rhythem of the night" is that not techno? By the way Moovin needs to add C&C Music Factory "here we go lets Rock N Roll" to the playlist! -That song is Way "FUN" and was a big hit back in the day!

Correct. Technotronic and Coronna are NOT techno. It's Europop House. Most Americans call dance music 'techno'. Techono is a type of dance music. It is not the same as calling pop music "Rock". It's like saying you drive a Chevette just because you have a Chevrolet. The model of the maker doesn't apply to all models of the maker. Consider this your chance to use the term 'dance' instead of 'techno' so you sound like you know what you're talking about. Other dance fans will appreciate that!
