According to the FCC website, Salem has been issued two Travelers Information Stations to ODOT on 1650kHz. Both broadcast from a pole with 10 watts on Commercial St. North of Hickory St. Offices are at 455 Airport Road S.E., Building C. The license for WQEX432 was issued on May 9, 2006. The license for WQDK405 was issued on July 13, 2006. Has anyone heard announcements on 1650 yet?

Yes. They were airing a loop with a " this is a test of the odot traveler advisery system for salem and north albany" , intermixed with NOAA radio. Now, they're only airing the NOAA radio. I like the idea of TIS systems, but they don't seem to be imlemented the right way. How many motorists KNOW to turn on 1650 AM in case of an emergency or adverse road conditions? I think more of a publicity campaign is needed for them to be useful.

The TIS system in Salem/ N Albany doesn't have a sign that I have seen . They could be a great resource for 24/7 traffic and weather- since alot of local radio isn't doing that anymore!

Why can't they broadcast live! I can't see them doing very well in the ratings without an airstaff!

No. It sounds like they signed it off after the initial testing. It was mentioned that there were problems with the signal getting into the phone system. Maybe, they couldn't find a cost-effective way of fixing this problem? The other possibilty is that they only intend to broadcast during emergencies. If that is the case, how are the good people of Beaverton supposed to know to listen to 1610 for emergency information??

Alfredo's right. WQCI718 1610kHz Beaverton signed off the air on September 1, 2005 and has not been heard from since. The station had tested on July 6, 2005. Beginning it's broadcast 24/7 on August 1, 2005. Maybe it's hooked into Beaverton's Nike problems!

I'm thinking it only reached out about 3 miles so Hillsboro is too far out. There's another one in Gresham on the same frequency and I keep forgetting to listen when I'm in the area.

I just called the number listed for the Beaverton Emergency Management Program Coordinater, and was told that the station is functional, but will only be used in an emergency situation for now. 24/7 operation will begin after a construction project in the building that will also involve some new phone system wiring, perhaps by next summer. WQCI718 could be heard in Hillsboro during testing, weak on a car radio... better with a 2 foot loop.

I used to be able to pick up WQCI718 with my rooftop loop antenna, but the signal was fairly weak. If I remember correctly, it wasn't that much stronger than the signal from the 1610 TIS on Timber Rd near Vernonia. Talking house transmitters within two miles or so could easily wipe it out.

Jr tech: Thanks for posting this. Yes it's still on the air as of this writing. I'm guessing if it's on at this hour, they've left it on and will broadcast 24 hours.
