How come the overnite DJ (Tim Conway) does not mention what records are being played (no title, artist or other info)? He only mentions things, such as times other DJs are on, not specificly related to whats on at the moment.

Maybe, he's breaking in on overnights to be ready for middays. We can only hope. I didn't know anyone was there, voicetracked or not. I'll have to listen.

It could be they're rotating a number of "generic" voicetracks so no one has to VT daily.

I just listened, that's my buddy Jim Conway, not Tim. Jim was originally a Kisn-FM weekender.

The website doesn't know he's there either. I first heard him on 910 early morning a couple weeks ago.
It seemed funny that they have a DJ for midnight to 6AM, but not 10AM-2PM, nor 7PM to midnite.

Sort of a combo between voice tracking and being an image voice? Like K103 used to do late at night..?

I wonder if we could talk Tom Murphy into sending some air checks to KISN so at least we can have some semblence of a midday host.

While Googling on "KVAN 1959" (in assist of quest for people who knew Willie) I ran across this page on KISN in the Netherlands.

Since this is the only current KISN thread I am posting this bizarre link here:

http://www.radio.nl/2003/home/medianieuws/010.archief/2005/04/95351.html

The page won't Babelfish but I managed to get the text translated by cut'n paste, in order to share which I've deposited it here; please pardon the length.

(Those familiar with Babelfish's automated struggle with modern vernacular Dutch will not be surprised at the mistakes; one can still follow the drift pretty well. "Middengolf" is apparently "medium wave," Euro-speak for "AM.")

KISN Portland on old middengolffrequentie

Last week Thursday the radio station KISN in Portland has returned on the old middengolffrequentie 910 AM, where it transmitted in the sixties also already on. Owner Entercom has decided the station of the FM to the AM move. On the former FM-frequency (97.1) now Charlie FM is hear, a station with Jack-FM-achtig format. The talkstation Max910, which was to voorkort on 910 the AM to hear, its retransmissions have struck.

Success

KISN were in the '60s and '70s a very successful and trendzettend top 40 station in the region Portland. The success of KISN started the station KVAN on 1 May 1959 then was sold to Star Broadcasting. As a result of these sale the so-called "callsigns" were modified of KVAN in KISN. The station started stunt in the first days already immediately by giving away $5000. An enormous amount, certainly which time. The tel. lines stood red-hot. By means of the three tel. lines of KISN within an hour 1200 phone calls were registered.

Because the studio of KISN on an angle of two streets had established, the studio gekscherend "Kisn corner" was called. Deejays of the first hour were among other things Hal Raymond (6-9 hours), Steve Brown (9-12 hour), Mike West (12-15 hours) and Wally Thornton (15-19 hours). KISN were notable not only because of its striking manner of radio make, also make the manner of publicity for the station was notable. Thus the station on the toegangsweg to the fly field of Portland let place a large billboard with the text: "While you've leg gone.... We property leg Kisn your wife. The Mighty 91."

From the air in 1976, there plotsklaps an end comes to the retransmissions of KISN. The medium watching dogs decided FCC, as it happens, not extend the licentie of the station. KISN lodged an appeal against that, but in vain. The judge put, as it happens, the FCC in the right and KISN had strike within 90 days the retransmissions. On 2 September 1976 for bell battle middernacht becomes the very last plate [disc] ingestart: "Someday We'll Be Together" of Diana Ross & The Supremes. Deejay David Stone spoke the last words on the station: This ate time KISN leaves the air for an indefinite period or time. Goodnight from The Kisn Good Guys. For one minute concerning 12, in the middle of in the plate of Diana Ross, the opens became quietly on magical 91 and KISN were from air.

In the years `80

Beginning eighties returned KISN in Portland, but to make it confusing: not with the callsigns KISN, but with the callsings KKSN. The station returned, as it happens, on FM, but the callsigns KISN were for the fm-band already in use by a station in salt lake city. As a rule considers that all callsigns combinations but one can prevent time on FM, AM or TV. Toch KKSN called themselves, however, Kisn. End eighties modified Kisn the format to oldies and twisted with that hits with which it has become. Today the day carries this station still the oldies format.

Future Now

Kisn are on the magical 91(0) AM, have the station original callsigns also its KISN. These were for the middengolf, as it happens, still available. Most of the deejays, such as Tom Parker and John Williams have been moved to the middengolf. There toch stick a number of disadvantages to the removal of FM to AM. First cover becomes smaller. With 97.1 the FM 11 millions people were reached, with 910 the AM this there 7.2 million is.

Also the sound quality of the middengolf is less well than those of the FM. Already sounds the middengolf in the United States improve then in Europe, but that comes because the link classification is differently. But according to the station this no objection needs be. New techniques as digital HD (high Definition) radio makes it possible strongly improve the sound of the middengolf. Also KISN predominate go out to send in HD radio quality. Moreover the station will soon will start with live streaming by means of the Internet.

11 million????!?!? Isn't that more than the population of Oregon as a whole??? Crazy.

Also, I smiled with the reference to "babelfish." Have any of you ever read any Douglas Adams books?
I, personally, am a fiend for his work, and looooooooove the concept of a babelfish.

Douglas Adams is wonderful wordplay, plots with mind numbing scale and playfulness, vivid characters all wrapped with a tongue in cheek view of the world.

Required reading, IMHO.

(And yes I know exactly where my towel is and carry it on towel day!)

Must be a mis-translation into "miljoen." Hundreds of thousands would make sense (i.e., FM coverage over 1.1 million pop. area vs. 700,000 for the AM). In figures, Dutch place spaces where we use commas and we use periods where they use commas, though that doesn't quite explain it.

From context, middengolf = medium wave = what we call "AM." Curiously, they use "FM" as we do for what the Brits and some other parts of the continent call "VHF."

Its too bad that 910 can't have somebody announce the title and artist of the songs when there is no live announcer, especially at middays and evenings. That doesn't have to be live. KLSC at 1410 used to do that and it worked pretty well. At least that way you know what was being played.

They have a building full of people? Is that allowed? I thought clusters had a 5 person limit on premises at any one time........ with no occupancy permitted on weekends. A national building code thing, I believe...........

This evening in the 6PM hour, the DJ (Trish) announced that she was going to play Sonny and Cher "I've Got You Babe" but played something totally different with a much quicker tempo and at the end she said with a laugh in her voice "Hey Sonny and Cher were really rocking out, weren't they?" Then proceeded to play the correct one.

That is what I like.... real people making mistakes and acknowledging it. A real human.

Right on, Jimbo. It's weird but true, listeners ALWAYS remember the mistakes. 6 months later, even.

Today, I saw the following license plate: "910 CRY". Apparently, the question is "Whatum happen when K-Hits go on air?":-) I'm not making fun of a culture, only a stereotype.

Any media promotion I've heard refers to him starting a show or getting into radio, making no mention of the KISN stint. They usually say that someone is going to work at station A but came from station B.

You guys did hear about the YAWS restaraunt that's opening in March of 07 on 42nd and Sandy in the Hollywood district?? Mark Lindsay is partnered in it and will broadcast his show from a window in the Rock n Roll themed restaraunt on Saturday nights like the original KISN corner in the old days. Google him and you can get more info. Should be interesting. It's the old building where Cascade Pianos used to be.

The post doesn't mention the version of KKSN that came back on AM 910 in 1980,with Todd Tolces among others. "Brave New Radio" One of the best formats I have ever heard--if not THE best of all time

I think he was just talking about the KISN image as a Top 40 and later Oldies station. I'm pretty sure Craig Adams has this covered: I think Brave New Radio ran for 2 or 3 years, starting off with fairly decent ratings. KKSN then became a satellite fed AC called "Star Station". I thought that was a great name since KISN was owned by Star Stations Incorporated. After a brief time, it became Classical which worked pretty well until they got an FM competitor. Then they went to the nostalgic AM Only format that later returned as Sunny. Unfortunately, there was already an established nostalgic outlet. Soonafter, they went Oldies and 6 months later launched it on their recently acquired FM. Sometime later, there was a nostalgic hole in the market and they brought back AM Only(now called Adult Standards)and christened it "Sunny 910".
