I hear that Bustos has bought the station and they let go most of the personal to prepare for the sale. Bustos over paid for it at the price mentioned to me ($3M).

I heard Churchill of Eugene tried to offer the
owner of KSND $3.4 million but the radio broker for KSND would not respond to the offer. So how
can sell it to Bustos for $400,000 less?

Bustos would probably pay more than $3,000,000 for a Spanish FM in a market like Salem. 95.1 really should've been Spanish from day one.

didn't know KSND was for sale....

Is Ernie tired of trying to make this bird fly?

I actually liked the guy, but then I never worked for him... came close though......

figure how many units are running and at what rate and it will give you an idea of the asking price...... Won't be a secret when it sells.....

As for how many spanish? Depending on what you want for coverage Really 2 max in a market.... otherwise you start stealing from each other.....

How many CHR do you want? Classic Hits? Country?

Same idea, except that you would probably have more hispanic listen to Other than Spanish Than Non Hispanics listening to Spanish broadcasts!

The Hispanic population of the Portland metro is 9.5%.

Even with a sales power ratio of about 60
that would mean 5% of the radio ad revenues in the metro would be targeted at an hispanic audience. Not quite enough critical mass to support 2 Hispanic stations (one skewing younger, one skewing older).

But since the Hispanic population skews significantly younger than the overall population, a single young skewing Hispanic FM station could be very successful in both revenue and ratings.

That's not true. The personal are still there. I called KSND's request line and talked with the DJ. That would be difficult to do if he was no longer working at the station.

From yesterday's Denver Rocky Mountain News:

"The major story in Denver radio continues to be the audience ratings rise of the Spanish-language channel KXPK-FM (96.5).
In the spring Arbitron diary audience survey (March 30-June 21), the Entracom-owned outlet registered a 4.8 audience share, good enough for fourth place in the report."

Maybe Bustos could buy KFIS (94.1). It's a class C2 station, so it shouldn't cost that much to buy.

Salem's old "M.O." was to buy Contemporary Christian Music stations only to flip them to paid preaching, or just to flip to other owners after a few years, as they did with "Spirit-FM."

It has only been in recent years that CCM has been a viable money maker, and unlike a lot of mom & pop operators who struggled for years to provide "music ministry," Salem only jumped into CCM when the money was there.

Many, if not most of their CCM stations pull fairly decent ratings, and their brokered religion stations (KPDQ-FM) rake in the dough, but ratings are dismal for most of their secular right-wing talk stations, which normally get only leftover crumbs from the bigger N/T stations in their respective markets. In a city that already has KEX, KXL, KPAM, and Salem's own KPDQ-AM, a station like KTRO has a steep uphill battle.

I have heard that too (that the brokered religious stations make good money). But someone within Salem has to be more than slightly concerned that their stock price has taken a nearly 40% plunge in the past 12 months.

If KTRO has a bright spot, I think it has to be Dennis Prager. I first became aware of him when he was a frequent guest on Tom Snyder's late night CBS TV show. I wished at the time that KABC would syndicate him, and it wasn't too long before he showed up locally on 1150.

Unlike so many conservative talk show hosts, he doesn't seem to make a point of alienating people who disagree with him.

KTRO is kind of a Radio Mensa forum.

Bill Bennett has a PhD.
Laura Ingraham has a JD, as does Michael Medved and Hugh Hewitt.

I don't know about the others, but I always learn something when I listen to them, particularly Medved and Prager.

KXL/KXJM has been sold to Cumulonimbus Broadcasting and both will soon change format.

KXL will go All Lars All the Time, alternating between his local and syndicated shows. The entire news staff is being sacked. The KXL staff will be Lars, Shawn Taylor, a call screener and three board ops.

KXJM will soon go all polka, except for the morning show "The Playhouse" which will shift to all-nights to better compete with the Art Bell flying saucer show. The rest of the day will be handled by voice trackers from the Cumulonimbus Oshkosh, Wisconsin cluster.

This will all happen very soon but I'm not at liberty to say more.
