This is why the american corporation is in so much trouble. The people at the top fail to see the obvious coming. Oprah talks about it on her show and we're in the depth of the worst recession in years, what the hell did you THINK was going to happen?

Yes, a semi-fiasco, but my listeners today told me they got their food for the most part...a lot of standing in lines, a few places ran out. Not sure it really matters, just more attention to their new product at KFC. That's the way it works in today's marketing world.

Yes, agreed, but the masses will go after anything free, especially today. I had one caller today say they fed their entire five member family on this promotion! Whatever...

(actually, it IS bad food nutritionally, but tastes pretty good, and this was a promotion for their new "grilled chicken". Funny thing was the stories I was hearing today were that they ran out of the grilled and offered to substitute the original recepie, kind of like a drug dealer might do?)

The Denny's free Grand Slam breakfast was much better. Greasy foods like fried chicken make my tummy unhappy.

I heard the grilled chicken is pretty awful ...

I'm sure it isn't much healthier than the fried chicken anyways.

Am I the only one here who lives walking distance to a Popeyes??? That was a happy accident when I bought my place!

KFC chicken is plastic and assembled in China, right? Just tastes that way...

The overall problem's with KFC's product started long ago when they switched out the broasting method for the fried method.

If I'm craving fried chicken I want Popeye's first, broasted chicken from a tavern second, or Winco's great chicken.

KFC just blows!

I like Popeye's a lot, but can get not-as-good-but-much-better-than-KFC chicken at Albertson's or Safeway or Fred Meyer for FAR less (less than KFC's reg. prices, too), so I don't often go to Popeye's, even though it's quite close to my home.

Lucky you!!!!

It's probably 12 miles of so from where I live in Vancouver to the Popeye's on MLK (the furthest North one), but I'll gladly drive it for the spicy chicken and the red beans and rice!!!

Fast food joints are not on my dietary map at all. I would prefer to go to New Season's deli and get the good meat without all the crap.

Yeah it costs more but man I want real food.

You me to tell me that the KFC TV commercials are blatant lies?

They closed the popeyes here. turned it into a dunkin donuts.

Chick fil A is ok, but rather pricey....

(of course right now, bologna is rather pricey as well.)

Chick-Fil-A has been building new stores the past few years. Their food is pretty good. In the west they are only in California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming.

Skybill, if you're out in East Vancouver, it's a quick trip to the Popeye's at Burns Bros Troutdale.

I hit that one every time I go to Flying J for diesel.

I wish we had Church's Chicken here, although Popeye's beats KFC hands down ;-)

The Popeyes at Burns Brothers in Troutdale is a small operation that is different than a regular standalone. The chicken may be the same but everything else is different. I know exactly what I want at Burns Brothers but the menu at the Standalone in Gresham is bigger and much different. They don't have half the stuff that Burns Bros. does and Burns only has a small percentage of what the standalones have.

All the Popeyes can have different menus. (Not that I'm, uh, an expert or anything, nuh uh.) The two on MLK in NE Portland are owned by the same people. There are a few at truck stops in Troutdale and Aurora. And - if they are still open, never actually patronized either one - there are a couple of newer stores, one in outer NE near 82nd and Killingsworth and another in Beaverton off Walker Road and 158th.

The two on MLK are actually very well managed I think. Many of same people have worked there for years and I know several of them slightly - not something you normally see at fast food restaurants where turnover is usually pretty high.

I never buy the sides, just the chicken, so I hadn't noticed the differences.

I don't like the ones on MLK, even though they're closer to me. That's why I hit Burns Bros. when I'm out that way.

Why don't you like the ones on MLK? The people there are super nice to me, and the food is always hot and good (well, I mean, for fast food). The biscuit is always the highlight of any Popeye's meal, though. I think it is 99% fat...

"99% fat, highlight..."

That makes perfect sense! lol

BTW, I've had Popeyes, I've had Chruch...both actually taste like real chicken, you know, like Mom used to make. But there IS something about KFC. Hate to admit it, but it is a guilty pleasure for me.

The problem with KFC is that quality varies greatly from store to store. The last time I had it on a long road trip driving through New Mexico, and I was so desperately hungry I stopped at a town in some Indian reservation and got some KFC take-out to eat and drive. I swear, it had been cooked a week ago! Just the worst "food" I've had in a long time. Other KFCs are closer to "acceptable" even if not "good."

Oddly enough, one of the best KFC meals I've ever had was in Prague, Czech Republic, of all places. When in Europe I always visit the American fast food places 1X or 2X a day just to get my diet coke fountain drink fix. Now and then I'll eat there too if I'm desperate. The KFC chicken I ate in Prague was surprisingly good. Can't be the same formulation as in the US - tasted too fresh, not greasy enough.

If there's a Popeye's and a KFC next to each other, there's not even a choice - Popeye's always wins, hands down, for me.

Andrew, I liked the food at both of them, just don't like the goings-on in the parking lots while I'm sitting in the drive-thru. I've had enough incidents at both of them to keep me from going back.

I don't need to buy anything not on the menu, don't need to find a party, and ladies, it's your problem if you don't approve of my friend hanging out with a white woman. That last bit happened at the northernmost location about 5 years ago. We were followed out to the parking lot and harrassed.

Entre_nous, I won't admit to how many times I've patronized both of the Popeye's on MLK over the years (or Chris would have a heart attack), but I've yet to encounter any sort of "incident" at either of them. Of course, they are both in urban neighborhoods - and cities being what they are, it's possible you'll encounter troublemakers here or there. I don't see what this has to do with Popeye's.

Perhaps you meant to say you would avoid that part of town where the two Popeye's on MLK are located? There is nothing unique about Popeye's that makes their patrons better or worse than elsewhere in the neighborhood.

LOL @ Roger! I've been known to be...

Andrew, I have no complaint with Popeye's on the inside. The outside, however, is a different matter. I'm no shrinking violet, hell, I hang around SW 3rd/Burnside (we have a business there). Stereotypes of folks and 'hoods be damned, except for the Pearl. THAT place scares me :-)

Same reason I don't go to the Republic for Chinese, alone, late at night. Done it enough times to know I don't care to run the gauntlet.

Maybe we should have a quickie meetup at that MLK Popeye's!

I've eaten there a lot too. Where I live now, it's a PITA, but I STILL GO, on occasion.

KFC really doesn't appeal to me as much as it used to.

Okay everybody Roger Eaton of KFC is a big fat liar. The promotion was to allow everybody a chance to get 4 and only 4 coupons with a unique bar code.

Sounds great doesn't it, oh but none of the cash registers at the KFC can read bar codes. So people were taking their four coupons they downloaded and making hundreds of copies of the coupons.

Enough copies to put KFC out of business. So KFC had to make an excuse and say they would issue "rainchecks" to stop people from having dozens of free meals over the next few weeks. The realty is Roger Eaton and his management team should reaign and to see the press bought into Rogers story.

But we must remember we don't "torture".

HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE THE TASTE OF KFC????Seroiusly! Its flavorful and very tastey. If given the choice I would rather go to Popeyes. My girlfriend lives a block away from the Popeys on 185th. So I usually end up hitting Popeys 2-3 times a week. I LOVE their spicy mashed Potatoes. So yummy! Talk about REAL SOUL FOOD! Their rice is "heaven on earth" and I always get the spicy chicken with lots of Popeys hot sauce.
Yes, Im an addict, but then again I love anything with grease!

Just call me Ol' Grease Ball!
